Feeling like your energy's at an all-time low? Fatigue, sleepiness, even exhaustion often kick in around week 9 of pregnancy, but it's for an important reason: Your body is working overtime to develop the placenta, the vital organ that will keep your baby supplied with nourishment and oxygen via the umbilical cord, and will ultimately weigh in at a whopping pound-and-a-half.
Baby's growing too, at a rate of a millimeter a day, and is now about an inch long, the size of a medium green cocktail olive - which you might actually be craving right now, along with a side of pickles, or the whole jar. Sour and salty are two top pregnancy cravings, along with sweet and spicy.
Your little bodybuilder can boast the groundbreaking of some brand new organs this week. The liver, the spleen and the gallbladder are all under construction now, and in a short time, will be fully formed. The bladder and urethra separate from the developing digestive tract, and the diaphragm is nearly fully formed. It's the muscular membrane that will separate the chest and the abdomen, plus help your baby breathe after being born.
Tiny muscles are starting to form, allowing your little dancer to make spontaneous reflex movements with those arms and legs. It's still way too early to feel anything, but you might be able to hear something. The awesome sound of your baby's heartbeat might be audible enough to be picked up by a Doppler device at your provider's office. Take a listen. It's sure to make your own heart beat a little faster.
