New York Times columnist, Thomas Friedman, is known to challenge conventional wisdom & established notions. While the world thinks there will be a pushback against China, he argues that the world could become even more dependent on them. In episode 468 of #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta explains why India must avoid declaring victory too soon & work hard at it with a sense of urgency.

@H J If you live in Africa and are happy with China, well, it may look good in the short term. The European nations colonized and bled all Asian nations too, so we have much in common. But, I wouldn't trust China in the long run. Look at what happened in srilanka. It's going to happen soon in Pakistan too. China will lead you into a debt trap and the squeeze till you part with territorial rights. be careful when dealing with them.

@H J I am not saying India is better than China. Before you comment on my mentality, read my comment properly. China is highly advanced, but they use their money and technology not for other nations benefit but withl a long term agenda to take control, once the borrower is unable to pay back the loan. You want to go with them, fine, your funeral. India has nothing to do with it. We are happy to progress at our place. Thank you.

There were economic and political experts who held the opinion that China's economy was burdened with a huge hidden NPA, known but not acknowledged by the state. India should have started preparing for the shift almost 15 years back. Obviously the main sectors are labour laws, land acquisition, and obtaining statuary permissions. There is some progress in the last area, but almost nothing has been done on the others. if we start seriously now, it may take a few years to reach the threshold benchmark, where it attracts international players. And the distrust against China is not something new. It was always there, but made economic sense to source from it. Now the distrust is magnified, but the importers are pragmatic, and will continue with the present setup, until a reliable alternative is available.
But India is a country with a huge internal market, with its 1.35 billion population, and a big opportunity for the indigenous industry.

Is there any other country in the world which is more pluralistic than India? The Hindus have lived with the followers of alien religions for over 1000 years, though they have been injured by some of them. Inspite of 1000 years of oppressive rule, India hasn’t become another Lebanon, or Iraq or Siriya. Even though Asian part of Russia and China have ethnic diversity, the authoritarian rules oppress the minority. In a open democratic society like india, where media is independent and strong, everyone will realise his best.

India has a great resume. No one has called it for an interview though. It does not appeal to prospective investors. Investors are looking for political stability, good infrastructure, smart, hardworking, disciplined sincere workers, stable legal system and so on. They are rational folks always looking for arbitrage and are only motivated by profits and rightfully so. They invest in China despite Tienanmen massacre. They sponsored Beijing Olympics. You ask yourself, if you had $1B to invest, where will you invest? India has the largest democracy. It only has that. Good % of population is illiterate. Good part of the country lacks dependable water supply and power. Population is exploding, arable land and land to put up plants are diminishing. Political parties don't come together to work for the good of the country after elections. Our diversity is not a boon. It has only gifted us with disharmony and chaos. Modi will need to declare emergency and rule India for 10 years. People fondly remember the duration when Mrs Gandhi declared emergency. Trains ran on time. That ain't going to happen now. We will see all the public sector undertakings bleed country's which was originally created by poor farmers and workers. Only in the defense sector we see some order.

The recent example is vodafone, it took more that 10 years to reach a verdict. You can imagine what would happen to mid and small companies. For handling income tax cases, we have 1 year waiting period just to reach court, and for the whole case period you have to deposit a large sum of money to govt regardless.
Judiciary is not just affecting common people but also businesses, hope our esteemed judges wake up !

Biggest hurdle in development of India is its voilent political system and all year round election. But Modi is the only exception, he is taking good decisions lightening fast which is the need of time, assembling all political parties and trying to fight as a country.

The Point which makes most sense to us as Indians is that we're unfortunately losing our plurality to populism.
As very rightly pointed out, the world can survive 'A Syria' but the world won't survive India.
Having said this, the country which will suffer the most shall be India itself.
'A House Divided against itself Cannot Stand'.
Getting our act together I believe in my understanding would mean Getting it Together Economically as well as Socially.
We Need to Forget out mutual differences and work Together as 'One People' as 'One Nation' as 'One India'.
In other words, we need to constantly remind ourselves and practice the values enshrined in 'Our System', those of Religious Tolerance, Democracy, Plurality, Secularism.

The basic premises now ,to shift from China ,are ,too many eggs in one basket, cut down the supply chain length, back to native land, irrespective of cost advantages, since when supply chain is cut at a critical time, there will not be any product at all to profit.
Every time you can not count on the strength of the leadership to bail you out.
In view of this ,India can benefit ,if we are competitive.

It's very doubtful if India can attract investors. Labour laws, bad infrastructure aside, the government has time and again exposed itself to be transactional rather than strategic in its thinking. Retroactive taxes? No credit available to the private sector since the government borrows so much of it... The list goes on.
My latest peeve is the increase in fuel tax. The price of diesel impacts the price of EVERYTHING! Any companies that may have been considering moving to India, they'll plug current fuel prices in to their business models and immediately conclude that logistics costs makes India unviable. Their inputs will be more expensive, which means a higher price for their products.
Well done India, trust us to shoot ourselves in the foot even before we leave the starting line.
