Spring is here! Now that spring has arrived that means it is time to start preparing the garden for the summer grow season. And one of my favorite shrubs that is a cinch to grow and prune is the butterfly bush, Buddleja spp.
In this video I demonstrate how to prune your butterfly bush back quite hard so that your plants can stay compact and produce the most flowers possible. #butterflybush #buddleja #buddleia #springgarden #gardening
I've been hesitant about pruning my BB, now I know what to do. Thanks 😊
sweeeeet
thank you! it was very informative and well described including the " why."
Great! I’m glad to hear that
Thank you for well explained tutorial. This is information I needed! 🌱
Happy to hear it was helpful!
I was just looking at my butterfly bush. It is so very tall and leggy. And like you said, it only flowers at the top. As soon as this snow melts I’m going to get out there and trim it up! Great video Devin, thanks!
Yes! Go trim it!
This was SO imformative. Thankyou for explaining so well!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Last winter I had to cut all the way to the ground. It was scary. They bounced right back and didn’t care one bit! So don’t get sad if you have to do that. Great video!
Thanks for sharing your experience!!
I love Butterfly bushes
They’re some
Of my favorites!!
Thank you for the info. Have great week.Take care and God Bless
You as well!
@@plantvibrations Thank you
Great tips! Gratitude and appreciation to you!
Thanks for watching!!
Wonderful video.
Like done 👍Thank you for sharing
Stay blessed 🍀🍀🍀
Thanks for watching!!
Excellent video Devin. We’ve been doing everything wrong! Would love it if you did more of these pruning tips. We have heather plants that have gotten very ‘leggy’. Any ideas for those. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I’d give them a nice hair cut right about now!
A belated congratulations on your marriage Devin. I’m certain you did, however, break a lot of hearts in the process. 😜
Hehe thank you!!
Thank you. After the cold snap we had in Dec, I am concerned about if mine is still alive. I know what to look for now
They’re such resilient plants. You may need to cut it back all the way. Sometimes the stems may flounder but the roots remain alive
Thanks!
No problem!
I had to trim my butterfly bush down to about 2 inches from the ground before I saw any green inside the branch. I didn't cut too much did I?
Nope you’ll be fine!
@@plantvibrations thankyou for replying back. :)
Very informative! Looking to do some trimming. Have any tips for trimming a rhododendron and a clematis?
If you go take a look at your clematis you should see some buds starting to emanate from the stems. At some point towards the end of the stems there will be no buds, cut that dead stem section off
My butterfly bush is 5-6’ should I prune down to 12”? Is it ok to prune below new buds?
Yes and yes
Thank you.question.
My Bush is leggy too with flower buds, at the top, getting ready to flower soon, should I prune back now? Or wait?
I’m personally having the same dilemma right now with one of mine. It’s either now or late winter next year
As I'm watching your video I'm in Boston...It's Spring right now but next week it will be below 50 degrees so I'm not sure if I should prune until
You should be fine to prune anytime now!
What do butterfly plant cocoons look like?
I’m not certain
I have 4 or 5 that previous owners planted . It’s time to prune now, but they look like different species. Same pruning advice for all? Thank you!
You should be fine to prune them all the same way. I’m assuming all the flower shapes are similar
@@plantvibrations Thanks so much! Yes, the flower shapes are indeed the same shape.
@plantvibrations hello from northern NJ! I have a few very tall bushes that didn’t start to show any signs of leaves until mid-July! I never trimmed because I was afraid they were dead. They are huge though with lots of woody stems that never bloomed. Should I hold off on doing anything until next spring (even though there likely won’t be any buds at that time). Is it ok to trim down when there are no signs of budding?
You can definitely trim now but wait to do a heavy cut back till spring, but sounds like your plant needs a full body rejuvenation
@@plantvibrations Thank you. Do i need to wait until i see buds to do the full cutback because that wont be until summer as was the case this year
when do you fertilize the plant and what is your go to fertilizer?
I use any kind of slow release fertilizer, and in the spring is good time
@@plantvibrations thank you is there any brand you recommend i'm new to this? kind regards coralman24
@@CoralMan24 check out my family's site at robertasgardens.net ! you can find some there
Thanks for this information. Do you have any suggestions for your Josie lilacs? 👍
Regarding pruning? After blooming!
@@plantvibrations Both and how often to fertilze in container pots. I bought mine from you all on QVC 2 years ago and it's not very big. I have it in a really large pot. Should we plant in the ground for best results? Thank you. 🦋🌻🦋
Can you prune hydrangeas and butterfly bushes later in the spring? Like now? Lol
Definitely butterfly bush, depends on type of hydrangea you’re growing
I have a dwarf butterfly bush, do I prune it the same? Thanks!!
yes you absolutely can!
Oh gosh I’m so late to this. I’ve just found a very leggy buddlija in my garden, am I too late to prune it? (Uk)
Not too late!
Do you prune at all during the summer?
you absolutely can if you want!
My BB looks to have bloomed out and died back already for this summer. Should I prune it now?
Your butterfly bush looks like it's too deep. . You should see the crown a little
The mulch guys put too much around the crown, ive removed quite a but of the extra girth. Thank you!
