I’m heading out to fertilize my Miss Molly butterfly bushes today. I was just waiting to hear what fertilizer to use. I pruned late last month since we’re a little further along here in Texas. Thanks Jenny!! 🦋

So i cut my butterfly bushes down to about 1/3 of the plant. I will be moving them to a different location because they got too large in my front flower garden. I have clay soil (it's awful). I forgot the tip about not planting the root ball down into the soil. Thank you for all your information in the videos. Someday i would like to come see your nursery.

Thank you for the informative video. I planted my Black Knight butterfly bush a few weeks ago. I am in zone 9a and it’s my first butterfly bush. I’m not anticipating any flowers this spring/summer as it is a young bush, but who knows. Next spring, I’ll prune it. Again, thanks for sharing your pruning techniques.

Thanks for this video, Jenny. I cut my Pugster White back last week pretty much all the way back and was worried you'd come on and say we needed to be careful. Now I'm confident I did it right! 😊 Thanks again. Have a wonderful day!

Don't do any trimming until you see some new growth popping up (be patient, they like it hot). Once you see some new leaves popping out, then you can prune. You've got this!

@Rhansplants - I am in Canada 🇨🇦equivalent to your zone five. My pugster and Miss Molly butterfly bushes did not flower until late summer. The growth did come from the bottom . It was only two years later when I did see many flowers. As Jenny mentioned the key is to make sure the roots don’t drown. So consider the amount of snow and how it melts, constant freezes and thaws especially with our global warming are not good .

Oh my gosh those tulips and daffodils are so gorgeous! I am in Zone 8A and have 3 large butterfly bushes that I've had for about 6 years. I hardly ever pruned them (because I wasn't educated back then like I am now) and over time they were not looking that well. Last year at this time, I cut them down to the ground and they came back more beautiful than ever and stayed around the 5-5 1/2 foot mark which is perfect for me to maintain throughout the summer (I keep them deadheaded). Last year I planted a few dwarf butterfly bushes in the backyard (Lo & Behold). This year I will be planting some of the Pugster's in a variety of colors in areas where we have removed old boring shrubs. I am so excited to get the Pugster's into my yard! Thanks for all of the info!

Good morning Jenny! I only have 1 small butterfly bush. I've had it fo3 or 4 years. It's small fat and round. I have so much green on it. I do have a lot of dead flowers all over it. I think I'll buy a larger one. Thank you so much!

Pruned my butterfly bush back to this height (in the video) last year. This year it was over 6 feet tall! So buddy got chopped back down again! Good to know that I wasn’t too rough on the pruning last year, they’re really tough plants.

Great explanation. You have given me the nudge to try a butterfly bush again. I've killed some, even in sandy soil. Always my fault --incorrect planting, untimely pruning, too much irrigation, you name it. 😂 Grace in gardening. Thanks, Jenny!! Rooting for the 100,000! 🎉

Good luck if you try it again. I don’t have a wet problem, really the opposite. But, I wanted to share a variety of butterfly bush that I planted last year and is almost fool proof, to me. Called Pugster Blue, it’s a dwarf that blooms continuously through the summer and doesn’t need to be deadheaded. Because it’s a dwarf, about 2’ x 2.5, I didn’t prune it at all this year. I took out roses because the deer ate the blooms all the time, and they don’t touch these, so no spraying. One great plant.

Thanks so much. So timely. Have two year old Pugsters, 5 of them, and I was just going to leave them this year. They are covered with new growth underneath, but I love the size. I will take off some growth at the top now that I have seen you do yours. Love the pugsters. No deer.

My mother in law taught me that if you take the leaves of daffodils and tie them in a knot so they lay flat on the ground they aren’t so annoying while the leaves die back. Therefore, while other perennials are growing and blooming they are easier to see.

My butterfly bushes are about 30 years old. They have sort of spread in the beginning, so I went from 2 to about 8. We trim them every spring and they are in sandy soil, no irrigation. To get more blooms late summer, should I do a light prune?

I have 3 butterfly bushes planted on a sloped area. All did great the first year. The 2 Miss Mollys did great their 2nd year, but my Miss Violet was really slow to come back. I think it sank a liitle - is it ok to lift it and fill in soil underneath? And if yes, when is the best time to do that? I'm in East Tenn. Zone 7b. Thank you!
