That ID app was incredible, I knew what species of fungi they were so tested it Amanita pantherina (rare for Britain) and Agaricus arvensis (Common for Britain)...both ID's were spot on. Thank you so much for spending so many hours creating it, so very helpful. Knowledge is the key to safe foraging, the more we can learn the safer we can be. I will be recommending this app to all my keen mushroom foragers that I teach as one of many tools they can use for identification.

Suprisingly accurate, I’m impressed! This is my new first-look method of identification! You’ve done the world of mycology a great deed.
I have been using this online app this season, its amazing and I only just came across your your UA-cam channel, I didn't know it was you guys who built it. Bravo and thank you.
this is gonna change a ton! I've been taking pictures for future ID and now i just popped one in your website and it worked!!! km so impressed, thank you so much for your time and effort in such an amazing tool!!!!!!!
Spectacular! The website is even more likely to steer me in the right direction without having to be an expert photographer than the other app I use run by iNaturalist. Thank you for all your hard work.
So awesome!! Thank you very much Old Man of the Woods and to your wife for all of your research and for creating and making this great website available! I can't wait to start using it! :D
the expert labelling makes all the difference! i had to not only label but annotate a few thousand clothing images to transfer-learn one of those big object-detection networks put out by google and it's definitely a laborious process. thanks for sharing this tool!
Living in your same general zone, I look forward to trying out your new resource soon. Thank you and your wife for freely spending your time to give us this tool.
Thank you for sharing your expertise and for the hours you and your wife devote to encouraging mushrooms enthusiasts. I’m newly into fungus (in the UK) so this will be a great learning tool.
You and your wife are the best! So excited. Tried other ones in the past and they’re not very good or should I say accurate. I appreciate all your hard studies and knowledge that you have given to the world. You and your wife are a blessing. Thank you for serving humanity well. God bless you both❤️
This is so incredibly helpful! Thaaaaaank you :) I've been trying to identify the mushrooms around my home, to better understand the role they play in the ecology. I was progressing verrrrrry slowly, but this helps me get a huuuge head start on identifying!
Thank you so much 😊 for this AI mushroom identification. You are so awesome. I love foraging for mushroom as well. Just found your Chanel and I did subscribe already. I am from Canada 🇨🇦
Developing anything (especially from scratch) takes FOREVER so thank you both for your puntles hours and this labor of love to help forager hopefuls like me!
This is really amazing. So greatful for this! Im really interested in learning all I can so I an be successful. I have a hard time learning in ways other than hands on. This is Perfect and I dont know how to thank you all for creating this! Mushroom groups on Facebook arent always the nicest. ♡
You're so cool man! I just found this today, so I'll be trying it out, I'm pretty excited. Really nice of you to make this free and share your knowledge as well as time and energy doing this for free! I wish I could tell someone but no one I know cares about a mushroom, not even a little bit... I wish I could meet some ppl like you guys but I'm lucky for the internet so I can find all this great info. I had to teach myself to forage, the internet has been my teacher, that can be scary when you're talking about eating fungus, but I'm not an idiot and can use my skills of observation and attention to detail, and only puck something I'm sure about, but I need to learn the more difficult fungus, I leave alot of good mushrooms because I cant 100% ID them. This program should be a great tool to learn from and help to expand my knowledge!
yeah, there are lots of fun walking in the woods finding and identifying unknown mushrooms. If you are not at the right time and right location, you will never be able to encounter them. Glad to know you like what we are sharing. We are also learning and know how difficult it is to start learning wild mushrooms. hopefully our content will make everyone a little bit easier to take the first step:)
@@OldManoftheWoods it took me about 10-15 years to take the first step, I didn't know what was safe or how to learn what was safe, or what's tasty ! The internet fixed that for me but I still have so much to learn. This really seems like a great tool

Fascinating look how you approach this AI project, using ImageNet, Python, G images. Wonderful team, you and your wife. Your skills must be in demand with many companies.
This works really well. It has identified every mushroom image I tried correctly. Is there anyway to get an offline version of it? I would buy it in a heartbeat. A lot of the woods I explore have no internet. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to try your id site out. Do you do a comparison video with gallerina and laughing Gyms? With so many looking into alternatives, the above could be lethal.
This looks like a really cool idea! I am excited to try it out. We are also in Maryland, up in Westminster although I work in Bethesda and Baltimore. Would love to go on a hunt with you some time!
Sounds like a fun project. Thanks for putting in the work and sharing. Why not open source it to get community contribution? Share it with mycologists and ask them to contribute images and assist in training. Maybe create a zooniverse project to help with training too.
Great idea guys! I'm pretty new to mushroom foraging and I was looking for something better than the apps out there! Bummer though that I live in North Dakota, so this probably won't work for me :( Have you guys thought about opening this up to others on all the mushrooms forums out there? You could get at least a few regions probably :D that would be momentous, actually!
A couple of suggestions: 1) a phone based app that can identify mushrooms offline and 2) the ability to upload multiple images so you can capture the mushrooms environment, gills, stem, caps and maybe even cut in half and 3) both scientific and common names.
Is there a way I can suggest common northeastern north american fungi to add to your database? I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I can't contribute financially, but I'd love to help contribute more species to your database. I've been experimenting with this for about 2 hours now and I see a few additions that wouldn't be too hard to add to your list. 1) I've noticed cantharellus lateritius is the only chanterelle ever suggested to me. C. cibarius could also be added without issue. 2) Mushrooms tend to make up the majority of the fungi listed. Could lichens like Cladonia coccifera or Dibaeis baeomyces be added? or is that a little too complicated/small? 3) every polypore I search comes up as ganoderma applanatum, including ganoderma tsugae. maybe more polypores need to be added? (Phellines igniarius, Fomitopsis pinicola, Fomitopsis betulina) 4) Exidia nigricans comes up as exidia recisa, probably an easy fix from just adding the species to your list. 5) I noticed Brefeldia maxima is on your list, which seems more complicated than I thought AI could figure out. if that's there, I believe Fuligo septica could work too. 6) Suillus spraguei is different enough from the other boletales, a computer might not get tripped out by it. All this aside, FungusID genuinely helped me out with 2 IDs that have been in my 'mystery' folder for over a month. Thanks for all your hard work!
Great suggestion! I'd like to add your mentioned species and hopefully you will see them in our next upgrade. If you have large amount of positively identified mushroom images and would like to contribute, please feel free to email me :)
@@OldManoftheWoods I'll see what I can do ;) I have many photos, but only certain ones have been checked over by others. I'm getting ready for bed now, but I'll have at least some of the ones I mentioned sent to you by morning
You need to add more Panaeolus cinctulus. They're very common in lawns and your app is reading them as 'psilocybe semilanciata', then 'panaeolus papilionaceus' then 'foenisecii'...the latter are very common as well but are distinctly different. Cinctulus have a pruinose stipe, black spores, and often contain psilocin. (Edit: otherwise, F'ing Amazing! I'm going to continue using it. And donate when I can. 👍🏼)
I have a rough draft of a crowd sourcing concept to further classify and smooth out results if you're interested. It uses a combination of a 20 questions style learning base, consensus to support/validate/correct its results, and in the background would use factors like recent precipitation, ground/air temperature, and location to add or subtract how likely something is to match.
Also a few more suggestions. First, might be worth it to add jquery-cropper so people can crop out the specific mushroom they want to check, so they don't have to edit the photo before they upload it. Second, capture the hash of the analyzed image and check your database for that hash first so save on resources instead of processing the same image twice. Third, with the hashes, you can also index and give the hash a short unique id similar to youtube video ids and pastebin ids. You can use this so people can share the link, and even add a voting or name suggestion similar to mushroom observer.
Thanks for these great suggestions. I was thinking of the same regarding your first point, the prediction sure will be more accurate with more information. When I got more time! Currently I am using an external API to resize large images under 5MB. Didn’t know jquery-cropper before but that sounds like a cool feature to add. Fungusid does not have a DBMS now. Hope in the future we could have the resource to build one.
Can't wait till you get it accurate enough to identify bolete mushrooms! I was expecting your issue to be in the fact that boletes are often differentiated on habitat/cap colour moreso than shape, so I tried a Boletus auripes picture (of the pore surface, with no cap visible)from my own album, and it listed 3 gilled mushrooms of all things :P The ones it did get right, it got right with 99% certainty. Although I can find flaws in the program, I've tried the shitty android apps you were referring to, and it does work better than any AI i've ever used before.
Excellent idea. Hope it works for you. I'm 0/2 so far but I was testing it on shrooms I haven't been able to identify myself and I'm in the French alps. Good hunting.
