The Nazi Surrender of Fortress Cherbourg (Where It Happened!!!) History Traveler Episode 295
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2023
- The American 7th Corps defeat of the German army in Cherbourg was a major development for the Allied in late June of 1944. In this episode, we're going to the exact spot where Gen. Joe Collins accepted the surrender of the German forces in Cherbourg who were under the command of Gen. Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben. Definitely a place that not many people have seen.

I’ve always been a big history buff but I’ve learnt more from you and your videos than I ever did in school and I thank you for that
Awesome! Glad to hear that.
@@TheHistoryUndergroundHey JD, I mentioned a few videos back that I had located an aerial reconnaissance photo from D-day which shows Dick Winter's discarded parachute. I just wanted to check if you were interested in it. Thanks!
@@jasonhill1729 - Sure!
@@TheHistoryUndergroundshould be in your inbox, let me know if you don't get it, Thanks!
@@TheHistoryUnderground Been watching for years , your Normandy vids in the past inspired me so much . I made the pilgrimage to Caen , and saw all the places on the coast you showed .Many thanks i had the best trip of my life , regards from the U.K.
Very nice video. Robert Capa, the Life Magazine photographer, appeared at the 9th Infantry Division commander's area to take pictures of the captured officers. But the Germans definitely had other notions. Von Schlieben was particularly difficult. “I am tired of this picture taking,” he snapped...
Capa, who speaks German, sighed and lowered his camera momentarily. “I too, am tired General,” he pointed out, “I have to take pictures of so many captured German generals!”.
I can watch your videos and drift back in time. I can even smell and feel the wind on my face at times. Thank you for taking us along on your travels. And thank you for all of the research it takes to tell such stories. You never disappoint JD.
Were you there ?
@@blackvulcan100I bet you’re fun at parties!!
To be able to stand in the same spot where history was made, has to be surreal. I would have a lump in my throat just trying to comprehend it all. I am a diehard fan of this channel. Well done JD!
Between the two of you, we get to see things nobody can without watching your channel JD. Not enough thanks to be offered for your hard work.
🙏🏼
Found that "Bob" Robert Karlin on Find a Grave....died 1997 age 76 in Colorado, born in Catharine Kansas 1920, noted as WWII Vet.
Very interesting .Thanks for all you do. Love history but sure wished I could have had a history teacher like you. Have learned so much since I found your channel. You and Eric are the best.
A bit of trivia. The nephew of Gen. Collins was Mike Collins...one of the Apollo 11 astronauts.
Yes! I think that I mention that in the next one.
Thank you for this input, so valuable!!
Every single time I watch one of your videos, I hit the like button before I even hit play because I know it is going to be fantastic. Thank you and keep up the great work!
You make amazing videos. Thank you for all your work and knowledge
I really enjoy the series you have in Europe especially the D-Day Invasion.
My father was not in the D-Day invasion, however, he was involved with the third infantry division in North Africa, Sicily, and then up the boot of Italy, and into Germany.
Thank you for calling it for what it was: an invasion (and not using the usual euphemisms such as "landings").
My dad, too. He never spoke to me about it. My cousin says he and his brother ( who was at the Bulge) only brought it up on the golf course. Wish I'd been a fly on the golf bag for those conversations!
Interesting. Have you read about Cmdr. Quentin Walsh, USCG, and his actions at Cherbourg. He lead the team which cleared the Naval Arsenal and later captured Fort du Hornet and freed 53 members of the 101st Airborne.
Thank You J.D. for another wonderful explanation of history.
Love your videos.
For the 10 th time. Your channel pays so much respect to my beloved France.
So enjoyable, compared to the channels where we simply don't exist.
Keep on the good job.
Every single video I watch of yours just makes me want to travel the world and learn about the history of each place I visit. Inspiring. Thank you JD
So interesting! You really have some amazing content and the footage you used of the actual event - no words
Amazing they preserved the room the way it was back then. Thanks for sharing JD.
That's an amazing piece of History. Thank you for sharing it
Glad you enjoyed it
JD, you do make fascinating videos that are very informative. Thank you for showing parts of history and the places that they occurred in! I also love your memes that you put up. It allows us not to take things too seriously.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome as always. Private residence!? Looks like it’s maintained like a museum. Would you be able to shed more info on this?
I was wondering the same thing lol
This might be one of the MOST unique and incredible unknown places to visit in France regarding WW2!!! I need to go see this. Incredibly UNDERRATED
DUDE! I started watching your videos years ago, and i absolultley love that youve pretty much blown up at this point. youre teaching so many people about things we couldve never known unless you told us. awesome stuff. have fun in normandy, i plan on making a trip eventually.
Thank you! Appreciate that.
Something I found interesting, unlike his fellow officers Gen von Schliengen is wearing a battle helmet and in spite of losing his command and while being led to surrender, -the greatest indignity for a General, the man still stops to wipes his feet before entering the building. at 4:36
I am always looking for your history, since so much of it a lot of people my age do not know, of all that happened there, and to see the films of everything along with the history is always amazing to me, and J.D you do an awesome job in gathering all this history and sharing and preseve it all. Great to have Erick with you to share what items he brought with him, share them with the places that they were found or used or belonged to at this time in history. The Room is amazing and to have saved all that they did, of what went on there is amazing to see.
You always seem to tell history on a human level. For example, the etching of the American soldier’s name was neat.
That POW "FAQ" flyer is an interesting read. Pretty convincing too.
👍🏻
Thank you for sharing this information. My American History course ended before WWII so I find your telling of it all fascinating!❤
👍🏻
@@TheHistoryUndergroundJesus loves you
These videos are excellent - as always, appreciate you bringing us this content. It also never ceases to amaze me the amount of contacts Erik has in Europe specifically related to WWII locations. Outstanding!
Watching your videos on Normandy, you keep giving us fantastic stories on what happened there during D-Day and beyond
Glad you like them!
Always interesting. Always high quality. Thanks.
Normandy is such a fun place to travel due to the layers of history and beautiful scenery. Thx for the content and travel ideas
My grandfather was at Utah beach and was 28th infantry division 112th infantry regiment. Can you do a video on the 28th infantry division (the bloody buckets)? He wouldn't talk about the war so I'm trying to see the places he may have been and get insight on the paths he took. Thanks.
That's not all that uncommon. My grandmother married her 3rd husband in 04 he was Air Force, I believe in this War. He asked my grandmother one time why she has his picture of him in his uniform on display.
JD you've done it again, great insight into a place many wouldn't be able to gain access 👏
Outstanding episode JD.
Always a great vid with so much info from your vids we want to thank you for such great history lesson s
Your contribution to society is tremendous, we live in a world where history gets ignored, cancelled and belittled. These pieces of history that you are bringing to us is what shaped us, what connects us and most importantly, teaches us what not to repeat. Unfortunately, kinetic confrontation, division and terrible acts against other human beings have been with us, well, quite frankly, since the first humans walked the face of the earth. Whoever forgets about our history, is doomed to repeat it. Unfortunately this is where our global society is heading to. Woke culture, cancel culture will get us there, ignore until we repeat all the mistakes once more.
Thanks again for your contribution, it is appreciated.
It's weird to think that in another 10-20 years, the second world war will be gone from living memory. If I ever by chance come across a veteran from back then, or even a civilian who remembers the war, I always show them the utmost respect and try to learn of their experiences, because once those people are gone, first hand accounts from that time in history will be gone forever. It's quite a moving thought when you think about it.
Always a great video, thanks.
Thank you JD for another wonderful great video
Thank you JD and Erik!
This is a wonderful video. Thank you!
I wish I had the means to travel and visit more of these sites. I guess I can find some local history to visit - it's everywhere we go if you dig a little...great video this one WOW! TY.
Some of the best history is local.
JD. Your videos just keep on getting better and better. You are a very lucky man. I wish I could do half of what you accomplish. THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA........
Really enjoyed the video mate can't wait for the next one
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow man. Wow! What a knockout video! JD, it seems like just knowing Erik is like knowing the Godfather. I mean, when you use phrases like "Erik knows the groundskeeper here.." , that's some next level, kiss-the-ring kind of stuff. It's really sensational watching you two guys. You should be on TV by now.
HEY,.. JD and Eric Hope everything is going well ? YA ! I've Really Appreciate And Enjoy these Least Series on D-Day
And all the fighting that went Along with trying
To move Inland
Great Job 👍
Take care stay safe
great video JD your the history teacher hear!! thanks for your efforts. i love it!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting and informative. Thanks
Some of our ‘former fellow subscribers are missing out on some excellent WWII information from our friend, JD.
But more fool them!
Great work as ever, my friend. 👍
JD very interesting site. Thanks for sharing this event and site with us. 💯👍🇺🇸
Thanks for another great video.
Amazing as all your videos!
Awesome, as usual……thank you, Andrew
Strong work J.D. and Erik. Along with the excellent video subjects you choose, I enjoy your background music choices. They are well chosen to fit the mood of the specific video. Who makes those decisions?
Amazing work thank you.
Great episode as always
👊🏻
you should credit the war photographers. especially on famous footage like the gi telling them to raise their hands higher. who shot that footage ?
I can’t believe how much I enjoy all these videos 4:04
Thought it was awesome that they kept a piece of the wallpaper or fabric that adorned the walls during that time period and had it framed on the wall behind the desk. Great vid as usual have really been enjoying these. Glad to see that the theft of your belongings In Athens didn’t slow you down. Thanks again for all the hard work making these videos. I really look forward to them. Hope you and Eric had a fantastic time over there.👍
👍🏻
Have a good week sir!
Very interesting. I’m glad the owner of the residence allowed you to have access. I speaks well of you.
🙂
These off the beaten path spots are fascinating. Embarrassed to admit if not for these videos, I’d never have known about Gen Collins and the Cherbourg campaign.
Thank you. Wonderful video. I am so excited of WWII and Airborne 101th and 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Love your work. Thanks from U.K.
beautiful reflection that was the turning point of the war - lovely
Excellent! Better than the dates and names that bored me stupid during history classes in school.
Worst way to teach history. Hope people are sharing out these videos.
Excellent
Best UA-cam channel to date full on be watching since start knew you were gonna get big yous should do iwo jima next
Appreciate that! Would love to get to Iwo.
I'm a simple eldritch horror.
I see a History Underground video on WW2 History...I click and I watch.
The German 88mm artillery at Ft du Roule was responsible for my father’s loss on 24 June 1944. His squadron, the 404th, 371st FG, was directed to attack and take out those guns. My dad was flying his P-47 Thunderbolt at approximately 2000’ altitude, on a bomb run. The guns fired and his ship was hit, blowing the entire tail off. He crashed into nearby Octeville and was killed. Today there is a monument on that place called, “Square Strahlendorf.” Cherbourg was liberated the next day. I was born two months after.
Oh my. Thank you for sharing that.
Very cool!
Thanks!
Erik certainly has a lot of connections 👍
Great video & am amazed of all the contacts Eric has across the world. Keep up the good work & enjoy the chicken nuggets. Oh I mean the Chick FIL-A😂
JD, after viewing so many of your vid's I'm running out of words for comments. All I can say is you would be a great American History teacher. If you ever tire of making videos maybe think of teaching. Great watch and thanks to the Greatest Generation.
Appreciate that. 🙂
And the comments are a big help for the channel.
I will always comment but I hate repeating myself, but if I do, it will be for your channel.@@TheHistoryUnderground
Wow. Thank you.
Another great job 🇺🇸
Wow!!! Fantastic!
Thanks a lot!
That was a very cool place to visit!!
that famous video where the wounded GI with the m1 carbine tells the german to raise up his hands higher!
Most excellent
As fascinating as that room is, I would love to wander around the whole chateau. Seeing the round towers and dormer windows makes me wonder what the floor plan of a building like that would be. Stunning place.
Me too. With it being a private residence, we were only allowed in the one room.
It's a family's house n home.
Amazing
Thanks!
Awesome
When I was a kid I saw an movie/opera called "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." Maybe it always rains there.
Love your production value! What are you using for Vlogging and for the beauty shots? Thank you!
Thanks! Currently running a Panasonic GH6.
@@TheHistoryUnderground nice! For both vlog and beauty? On a DJI RS3 or similar I would think. 👍
@@TheHistoryUnderground I totally “nerded out”. Watching your Eagles Nest video, I literally stopped the video when you were in the elevator and zoomed in on your setup! Your pretty much just holding the lens and body when vlogging! 😂
That chateau is immaculate. Looks like it hasn't changed in 70+ years. Amazing artifacts and the owner owns that history!
Pretty amazing place.
Yeah, this series should be a MANDATORY class in College!
👊🏻
Have you been to the Holocaust museum in Farmington hills Michigan? Extremely sobering experience.
Nice
Can’t believe Charborg had to go through that 😢
JD, that sign would be from a regimental hq not the VII Corps. Division, Corps, and Army would use G-1, G-2, etc.
Excellent video, especially see that American flag signed by General Collins. Was he a West Point grad?
Yes. He was the Army Chief of Staff during the Korean War. Commanded the VII Corps from Normandy til V-E Day.
Nice place.
Karl von Schlieben ordered his soldiers to fight to the last man until that might include himself.
Ha! Yep.
No, Hitler ordered then to fight to the last man. He ordered his men to delay the Allies as long as possible to allow destruction of the port. When this was completed, he ordered his men to surrender. Hitler ordered von Schlieben's arrest when he found out he had surrendered.
you should visit sagamore hill tr house and bull run manassas the second battle was a prelude to antietam
Hope you could visit Philippines for some world war 2 places
Wow!
Omg, I haven't noticed your tattoo, which means "adopted" in Russian. Wow😮
🙂
How do all these places actually feel? Can you still feel the presence for lack of a better term
JD any signs of Kilroy?
