Oh thank god, I never thought about using leverage from the body to ease pressure from my thumb! Barres were always a killer on the palm of my hand, you're my palm savior.
thank you for the tips n the exercise...my thumb start to hurt because applying to much pressure for playing the F# and Bm on my ukulele...thanks man :D
Woah.! This may be the most Important video you've done to date! ( for me at least) Sometimes simple things can be a huge revelation. I need to spend some serious time with this one ! Thanks Tyler looking forward to Beating the Beast of Barre.!
Thank you this is very helpful I've been trying to learn the song of the one i like but i couldn't really do barre chords that well i was lucky i saw this
You need more attention/views. This really helps quite a bit. Do you have any advice for increasing the speed of switching chords? Like I cant fluently switch form Bm to G, for example, I always need to adjust my thumb position...
My advice for that is to practice without a song or strum pattern, and just play the two faster and faster, but as always, stay slow and get consistent before you speed up.
Ok so I’m just starting ukulele and I’m learning from a book and I’m only 10 pages in. On this page it’s trying to get me to do this but after watching other vids it seems like people are saying this is really hard. Should I try other notes first?
No matter how many barre chord videos I watch, I still cant get it. I've been playing for 3 days. I always can't hit like the 3rd note, (E). Help please
I wouldn't worry to much if you have only been playing for 3 days. Some of that is just hand strength, you seem like a very determined type, I bet you'll get it before the week is done. If it is just the E string try moving your finger up a little bit so the string doesn't fall right in the knuckle, that might help a little bit, too.
I don't think you should do this because it can lead to intonation problems. This is probably a minor problem on a soprano ukulele, but on larger instruments like a tenor uke you might hear a slight raise in pitch. No problem when you play alone but a big problem in a band or a studio situation. Also I don't know if it is good for the neck of the ukulele if you regularly put preasure like this on it (even though I might be wrong here!) Last point, this exercise does not train your thumb at all, which after all you should use when you play barre chords. It rather leads to a strange position with your right hand, as it cannot move freely anymore. (That't why your ukulele is shaking a lot in this video) I do not intent to rant around here :D just some thoughts on your exercise.
It would only raise the pitch if you bent the strings. A little extra support isn't going to do that. Tenor, flat top acoustic, the little extra support isn't mean to be a replacement but just help, and if you don't over do it it'll be fine.
It does raise the pitch as you slightly (very slightly :D) bend your ukulele and because of this bend your strings. As I said, on soprano ukuleles and especially when you play alone you might not recognize this. But take for example if you want to record a song and you are having trouble to keep your ukulele in tune because you support your barres too strong it can be very annoying. Again, these are rather special situations, but once you are used to supporting your barres like this it is hard to let go if you need to. This is why I would not recommend doing this but rather practice your thumb.
@@TenThumbsProductions The problem i have isn't the barre itself, its getting my fingers into the Bb shape. So the exercise while intresting ,doesn't address my problem at all. I am working very hard on the B shapes w very little success.
Is it just the third string? The string might be falling right into the crack in your skin where your bones come together and your fingers bend. Try moving the finger vertically so your entire nail is sticking up over the top, that might help.
@@TenThumbsProductions the E string is so impossible! You’re right it goes into the joint and yet, no matter how I move it around, no luck yet. I tried higher barres as well- I won’t give up but I might cry a little. E string aays: Buzz buzz buzz
I've been trying to figure this out for two years and now it hit me that I strum too low compared to you when trying to use the right hand as leverage 😂🙈 smh
I watched a ton of videos that said nothing about being able to play without your thumb. I came to the conclusion that it was the only way and almost didn't watch this video. The biggest mistake you can make when learning, Is to think you know anything.
I always have to constantly humble myself and remind myself that there is infinite amounts of things to learn and no matter how I good I get at one thing that doesn’t mean I know how to do the other thing.
I love your videos, it's great to learn so much about ukulele for FREE!! You do an amazing job and I'm really thankful for it! This tip to do a barre chord is helpful, even though it's a little harder if you have boobs HAHAHAHH but thanks anyway!
What barre chord are you trying? Maybe there is an easier one to start with, also instead of trying on the 2nd fret try on the 5th fret, it is easier there, and then work your way from 5, to 4, to 3, to 2. Good luck!
It isn't meant to play like that, it is meant to just teach you to use the angle of the ukulele and build hand strength. Good luck and have a nice day.
Ha, ha, ha, yea, I have a lot of non sounding strings. If I get one to sound right another string doesn’t. It keeps changing. None sound sometimes. I have never had them all sound. Not easy. I can actually feel the string vibrate under my finger. Not good.
You're a goddamn genius it sounds SO MUCH BETTER NOW!
Ahhhhh yeah. That's what I'm talking about!!!!
Oh thank god, I never thought about using leverage from the body to ease pressure from my thumb! Barres were always a killer on the palm of my hand, you're my palm savior.
Palm savior! ahahaha, I love it.
Alright! Let's do this! I'm a bar chord aficionado. At least, I never hesitate to play them, but this gives me even more power! Thanks

You are welcome, happens to a lot of us, this should give the thumbs some space to breathe.

SUCH AN AMAZING TIP!!! I've been a "beginner" for a decade and I wish I had this tip from jump-start. Thanks TTP.
Thanks for this. Been playing guitar for years, always dreaded barre chords.
Another fabulous and fairly obvious piece of great advice. A lightbulb moment, thank you James.

With language like that no wonder you can’t 👎
@@deanayers1215 my language doesn't in any way affect my ability to play an instrument, your statement has no logic behind it.

I cannot make a barre chord with my first finger, but i can do it perfectly with my middle one. Any tips ?
Hands down the best lesson on bar chords!
I guess it desserves a thumb up ^^
best tip I've seen period. Thank you!
Awesome!

Bm to G is just adding one finger (3rd string[E] 3rd fret [G]) since you can play G as a bar chord.
YOU FREAKIN ROCK!
MUST get past this. Ye it aches a bit but I’m determined.. Thanks Tyler.
So good!
That's great, thanks.

Wow thanks for the video
Very happy to help!
I have a question... Did you originally learn with the thumb on the back for bar cords or like you are teaching now?
yes

It depends, some people come to it fairly naturally and others don't. Have you tried some of the barre chords? What do you think?
TenThumbs Productions well your tips definatly help I’m slowly getting the hang of the barre chords. I’m gonna keep practicing thanks for the tips!
THIS. IS. STILL. SO. HARD.
First oh this is awesome yeah i can never do barre chords so this helps!
Thank you so much Phillip!
Thanks dude! Every now and then I attempt Bm but then I give up. Just gotta keep practicing 😐

I don't have any problem with Cm7, but when I try to play C, my second and third finger keep touching other strings. Any tips on that?
TerezaPlankova you can't play the C chord? it's kinda easy, just play with you third finger and keep the other fingers back
*reading the comments while resting my index, half dead after pushing it away from me with that ukulele*
I constantly see people skipping out on barre chords and I'm like "naw. Not me" week 2 of playing a uke and i almost got them down
anyone else scared they're going to snap the part where the neck meets the body when barring without your thumb?
Thanks ukulele jesus
