This is very helpful because it helps the cats establish territory. Cats are naturally Territorial and another cat in the mix means less territory so when they go through this process they learn not to be threatened by each other.

Patience is the key and not to rush it.. My male cat was horrified when we brought in another male.. Of course we kept them separated initially but the few times they did see each other they would scream and yell.. And on the odd occasion had a couple of punch ups.. It took about 4 months of feeding them in separate spaces but also able to see each other.. And later having them both on leash during little introductions.. Its also best not to leave them Alone together even after they seem reasonably friendly... Also separate feeding bowls etc at a distance. Now they absolutely adore each other and quite frankly even ignore us and cannot be without each other 😀

true story: my mom adopted a kitten and she already had an established cat, both females.
the older cat HATED the kitten for weeks.
one night the kitten cried out in pain. she'd gotten her claw caught in a little toy bell.
so my mom grabbed the kitten and was trying to get her claw out of the bell when suddenly the older cat came running into the room and swatted at my mom.

My 1 year old and new kitten got along in less than a day. I put the kitten Carrier in the middle of the room and let them sniff each other, then I opened it. Then came hissing and growling, then came stalking, then came me monitoring it with "NO ARMANI" ,then came treats, then came a balance in attention giving. We've had the luxury of having a dedicated room that we use to introduce our new cats. Over a two week period, we rotate the room between the new and resident cat. We give each a chance to wander the rest of the house for half the day and then rotate cats. We've noticed after a few weeks, the cats stop being concerned about the intruder. My established cat has alwaaayyss been super friendly (either with humans or other animals (dogs and cats)). We adopted a very old white German shepherd recently and we did the scent swab. I even made my cat sleep on the dog's blanket and the dog on my cat's favorite blanket. Within 24h, they were already near one another (at least our cat was), sniffing each other's butts lol. Unfortunately, once their friendship was established, we had to put the dog down due to his health deteriorating as days went by. The important is that he enjoyed my cat's company and they did play together a lot. We might adopt a cat soon. We will do the scent swab again, since it was a very reliable tip :). Just an extra tip for owners; when introducing two animals to one another (whether a cat with a cat, a dog with a dog or a dog with a cat), do NOT stress or fear. They tend to sense that, which in return, make THEM stressed and fearful. Bear in mind the latter. Be relaxed and patient and, most importantly, show them how proud you are of them. Good luck :)

Seconding facial pheromone swapping! Echoing all the pain in the comments - my Established Cat has been a total frickin grumblepuss for months! Its also kind of a garfield/nermal situation where New Cat is more sociable and charming. He's even easier to play with - just jumps and flips for toys without needing a good 2-15 minutes of hunting the toy first (EC was a rescued street cat, NC a surrendered housecat from birth) So I have to be mindful to keep the attention and affection balanced, because EC is definitely watching and hating when NC comes up for cuddles...even though EC isn't big on cuddles! Why the dirty looks!? But scent swapping via chin scratches has had some effect. Caught EC grooming NC the other day, everyone looked shocked together lol!

My friend got a kitten and we got the cat from the place and took it home. We gave it 24 hours before trying to introduce my friend's other two cats. The one cat that my friend has is usually my favorite because he’s the most playful, nice, and comes and rubs up against me and plays with me. However, he immediately hissed as soon as we introduced the kitten to him. The other cat I thought wasn't going to do as well because he usually just hides under the bed and runs away from people. Surprisingly, he did better than the other cat and didn't hiss or act aggressive.

I have a bit of a catuation on my hands and would appreciate advice from anyone with experience
    ;
I have a chubby little housecat who I have spoiled a bit over the 3 or 4 years I have had her, she rarely goes outside and is very timid, but recently I discovered a neighborhood cat hangs out under and around my house (has a collar and bell but no tag), recently I started noticing this neighborhood cat developing small injuries (most likely fighting with other cats, but maybe from people too), so I have been taking care of it, feeding it, cleaning it and giving it a bed to sleep in just outside of my front door.
Recently I have been befriending this new cat more (who is so friendly and affectionate that she sometimes hugs and bites too hard), who is very quiet, but very intelligent and wary, my housecat however is quite dopey and territorial, I don't think the neighborhood cat has a real home (sometimes hangs out at my door all night) so I have seriously considered taking her in, BUT have had real trouble getting my housecat to do anything but hiss and scream at her, and the neighborhood cat moves after my housecat like prey sometimes, which freaks me out because the neighborhood cat seems to be no stranger to fighting and seems to eye my housecat like a furry sandwich.
I have so far kept them far enough apart that there has been no real fighting other than the shouting from my housecat, and I am trying to familiarise them by smell and sight slowly. I think the neighborhood cat kind of gets it by this stage, or thinks my housecat is no threat, but with how angry my housecat gets I fear she will get herself in trouble being so mean (and not used to fighting other cats like the neighborhood cat seems to be), even with a screen door between them my housecat mostly just hisses and yells and swings blindly.
I will try the process of feeding them near eachother with the screen door separating but I wonder if there is anything I can and should do to push the process along, the neighborhood cat worries me a lot (overly affectionate to the point of biting and scratching + random injuries is really worrying) I really like her now and dont want her to get in trouble before I can get the two to make friends. On top of that I think I need to get them both flea collars, but I know from experience how much something like that can break trust and make them freak out so I don't know if I should do that before they become friends, or if I should just leave the neighborhood cat as an "outside cat/scallywag" and try not to worry about her too much.

I'm in the same situation but I've taken in the friendly stray, he's waiting to get neutered in a big cage that has 3 tiers of cat hangouts (the kind they keep kittens in when you go to the petshop) and I got it for $80 on Amazon. He is ok with the confinement as long as he gets out for cuddling a few times a day, and while the friendliness level is moving very slowly, the security of that barrier seems to be working. Our older male cat hisses at him still but is investigating the new cat more and more. It's been two weeks.

Okay, I guess I should've watched this video two days ago. I just rescued my second cat not knowing any of this and I have one very pissed Pinot!
(Pinot is my 11month old kitten rescue)
I raised her since she was 5wks old and she's always been the sweetest kitten. I'm on day 2 of bringing home the rescue and my sweet Pinot actually hissed at me today when I tried to pet her!
What do I do? Someone please help!! I want to help this new rescue really bad because she is so malnourished, and is deaf in both ears and blind in one eye from kids hitting her with a bat when she was a kitten. I have the time and resources it would take to get her back to a normal weight (she's practically a skeleton), get her shots, spayed, etc. But I really wanted to keep her because I could provide her a good attentive home. She gets along fine with Porter (12 year old dog rescue), but Pinot is not only freaking out at the new cat, she's also freaking out at me. She ducks my pets now and even is growling and hissing at me. Will this pass? Or do I need to find a new home for the poor deaf/blind cat? I really don't want to do that. I want to keep them both and I'm feeling very torn right now.

one stuffy 3 yr old Manx , the Queen of this house, and 2 yr old sleek black Princess kitty that gets to stay with me 2 months. Much fissing and growling. one thing I do recommend if you are holding a cat like that who may at any moment decide to try to leave your lap - wrap it in a towel, so much safer for human!, preventative measures. a mad cat is no one to fool with. I hope these two can eventually play together but its too soon to tell. great video but I kept waiting to see if you ever blinked, which you didnt!

They had food very close to each other and I gave them a treat. And also they have been in each others room and sometimes looked at each other when opening the door and so. Today when they were eating together, the old cat got really close (I have the kitten in a small cage while the old one is in just for safety) and the old one smelled it and hissed a bit and I just let her go.

This is me with a twist. I found an older semi-feral outside and poor boi was beaten up quite badly, and a neglectful owner stole another feral I had homed. :(. But someone sent the other boi to me. I got him to the ER vet yesterday, and am getting him vetted, vaccinated, neutered Monday. Kushie is an established spoiled rescue boi (12 y), neutered, vetted, etc. it’s a process for sure. New guy has his own room and I have a pet gate I use as well. Issue is, they are jumpers. Even the new senior has some air. They both just want to be close to me, but Kushie (established boi) does not want to share. They are still growling and hissy but through the door they just sit. At least Kushie does. New boi when Kushie is yelling at the door looks a bit anxious but eventually ignores him.
I’m hopeful and grateful he let me catch him so he can live the rest of his life peaceful.

I’ve had a cat for about 3 months now, his name is Lucky (he’s 4-6 months old) he’s been the only cat for months. I just got his brother Leo (Same age as Lucky) two days ago and I only have a one bedroom place, and I had to put them together. Leo constantly hisses at my other cat, I wake up in the middle of the night to them fighting but it’s not like a brutal fight. I had to put Lucky in a cage. I’m just not sure how to get them to work it out. Leo is an aggressive cat, he hisses at me and claws at me sometimes. Any advice?

@@MsSahara1955 because I literally went through this three months ago I feel your pain. I have two Bengal cats (the ones that are cool with wearing sweaters 😂) BTW-I’m not one of them crazy cat people who are always dressing the cat up. However I do throw a cute little outfit on them every few months and take a couple pics. Anyways... My two bangles are six years old brother and sister and I got my daughter a kitten for Christmas. Because I have two cats they feed off of each other of course so we introduced each cat separately. My female cat seemed suspicious and very interested in the kitten and was as welcoming as a cat could be to a strange cat. She was actually pretty cool with her. Then my male cat was introduced to her and he was not having it he started hissing his ears went back his for fluffed out and we still kept them near each other at this point because there was no violence. After a couple of minutes he did swallow a couple of times no claws so we put him in the other room. We kept the kitten in a closed bedroom for about a day then we let her come out and kind of roam about the house. We then let all the cats freely in the house together. The female cat was approaching the kitten and being friendly but cautious until her brother came up and hissed therefore she started hissing and feeding off his vibe she then was on his level. We had to keep an eye because there was a lot of hissing and growling and chasing and all that stuff. So after about a week it didn’t ease up too much So at that point I was extremely nervous that this would take forever or they may never fully get along. But within a few days it’s almost like the with the flick of a switch I noticed them sleeping together sometimes so when my two cats would sleep I would leave the kitten next to them to sleep by them so they can get used to each other and like I said it was like the flick of a switch and they were just all family they gave each other baths now they play and they sleep with each other, they fully love each other like family now!

Thank you for sharing these ideas. I got a new ragdoll cat and my tuxedo is not happy about it and the new cat isn't happy about it either. He doesn't like my dog Winston either. So I did have them all out and kept them from hurting each other. I played with a long string with them and kept myself in between them. I fed them treats together. By the end of the day I was exhausted. So I have them separated and they take turns having the run of the house. Now to teach the new cat to leave the dog alone. I can feed them treats together but if I'm not around he will attack him ( he won't defend himself) so I have to watch closely. The new cat loves me and is so cuddly so I want to do it in a way where he still loves me so I'm going to try the clapping and the pillow.... it's only been 4 days so I know it will get better...

Yes I have had them my whole life but my now cat Kuss Kuss, since my older cat died (and he was a nightmare with the kittens, pushing them off the first floor roof and coming in all happy lol!), she has been alone. Now both the kittens were Bengal siblings and her brother died young from cardiomyopathy but in the last year I have been wanting the cats I feed outdoors to come in and on the one occasion the Tom came in she went ballistic. No hissing or growling just this low, deep Woah noise and she attacked him and I got badly bitten trying to pull her off. I know she won't tolerate him even though she knows him and is aware I feed him. It's the little outside female I was wondering about as she is obviously someone's cat who is now homeless and she is dying to come in. I just don't want a huge fight and vet or hospital visits. I agree with everything the video says except I don't spray water at them ever.

So, we have 2 cats. They go in and outside in are garden. One is 10 (that was adopted as a kitten) and one who is probably around 7 years (adopted us a few years back). They got along by themselves, in our yard and now they are totally ok with each other, will nap near each other.
BUT. mom brought in a new kitten, just under a year old. Been a week, maybe two, and she's stuck in a room this whole time. My mom won't let me let the kitten walk around the house (while the other two are outside..) It annoys me... She won't let me continue with the process. The kitten isn't ready to meet the other cats, but definitely needs a daily let out to roam around. Idk what to say to convince her, since it's "her" cat.
I want to give up, but I know if I will the cat will suffer..

My established big cat almost killed newly adopted poor kitten . He attacked so wild and she literally pooped herself. It was a murder attempt. She is locked and safe in my room only for last 3 days. Don't know how to handle it!

I know! I live in a two bedroom house but the problem is my current cat is so insanely jealous, I'm worried shutting her out will just make it worse, and I can't leave a tiny kitten alone in a room for long periods of time

Do you live in a loft apartment? You might try making a temporary enclosure out of screens or room dividers or something. You could also keep the new cat shut in the bathroom for a few days, if the bathroom's not too small for that. If you can't come up with some way to separate them, try to just create more happy experiences for them both. Shared mealtimes are the world's biggest help -- wouldn't we all rather eat than fight? It may take some time, but most problems between cats will work themselves out if the kitties in question are given enough tasty things and play routines together.
