When we got our male kitten in October we were concerned about how well our 8 year old female would accept another cat in the house. We kept them separated for about 2 days. To our surprise, while our female didn't particularly like the idea right away, she was never hostile towards the little kitty. She'd hiss at him if he got too close to her, but that was it. Within 3 days we felt comfortable leaving them alone when we went to work. The distance between the two of them before she'd start hissing gradually decreased. EXCELLENT VIDEO! I was looking after a stray outside for 2 weeks (I have a heated outbuilding) and was going to try this method. The cat rescue agency, Humane Society and my Vet all recommended the exact same steps as you, but it is so much more helpful to see it in action. I was also prepared to have the new cat rehomed if my indoor girl didn't accept him. Fortunately, we found his owners 2 days before the introduction. ❤⚠️⚠️ Tip to all cat owners: Get your kitty MICROCHIPPED! The first thing I did when the stray started hanging around outside was to take him to my vet to be scanned for a microchip (it's free). He didn't have one and it took 2 weeks of work between myself and 2 agencies to find his owners.
the problem is when you only have one bedroom apt it is really hard b/c the resident cat doesn't like not having full access and knows that someone is in that other room; and the resident cat will be unlikely to tolerate being locked in a room!
We tried the complicated steps with site swapping, eating split a wall etc. It just made the tension worse for our first cat. After 4-5 days we took the new one into the living room. They were kind of like brothers after 2 days..
OMG I'm so happy reading your comment. My new cats will arrive tomorrow and I have a studio apartment. They are just 7 months old and my current cat 13 years. My cat loves her bell. She follows me when I remove it to clean it and then sits on the side of the sink while I clean it and purrs when I put it back on her.
I too am growing more and more as to these people that believe in long, complicated intro's they have way too much time on their hands and just thinking about it too much. All cats are unique (why I love them so much). Ive seen some of these complicated videos where the resident cat is fairly easy going..dont think it necessary to have separated so long. Ive had one cat I think I did it too rushed but he NEVER liked any cats ..he "tolerated" them. To this day I discipline him when he gets too aggressive and over the years he has softened quite a bit. I just give him and my other cat LOADS of attn and love regardless.
I was very careless. I have a wonderful cat, who showed up as a stray a couple of years ago. He is very sweet. Another stray showed up and of course, we stuck them together. We are very lucky as they are the best of friends. If I ever get another stray, I'll know what to do next time. Ahah.
This is the most helpful video I found ! I have two boys here and the oldest one still feels threatened and runs away every time he sees the other one...it's been 9 years now 😭 Me and my dad we live in one house but it's separated in two parts. I live in one part with my boy Ramses, my dad lives in the other part with my boy Bruce. Bruce is always running, and frightened if he sees Ramses. I will try the re-introducing but it's already a different situation to start from. I hope this works somehow.
Day 3: our 5 year old male cat absolutely hates the new 10 week old female kitten. I think we might have rushed the introduction and cause a bad first impression. We'll go over these steps and hope for the best. If not, we'll have to take her back to the shelter. Please wish us luck. Day 5: We keep the kitten in a separate room and don't let her roam around the house. The big cat sometimes comes over to her door and by using a door stop, we let him see her and watch her. At first he hissed and growled a lot but now he just sits down and watches her without making aggressive noises. He stays for 10 minutes and gets bored and leaves. He is more comfortable with using his litter box today. At first he would either not use it at all or use it every ten minutes (which i am guessing is because of stress). No signs of stress is shown at this point. But we still have a long way to go.
i agree with your methods, and its painful to watch so many videos of people doing it wrong ,and not even doing any corrective discipline when they get aggressive
I did this exercise 15 years ago with my one year old male. I adopted a 7 month old female. They were separated about a week before they were introduced together in the home. It worked pretty well as there was very little aggression. Unfortunately my male should have been in a one cat household. He never fully accepted my female. They tolerated one another. My male just died and I am considering bringing a new cat into the household. My Vet has given me some good advice. He suggested I might want to foster a cat to be sure they get along before fully adopting.
Them: Day 2, everythings fine, everyone loves each other My cat situation: Day 2, cat lies under my bed and hasn't moved for 20 hours Update (7 months later): The older cat has died due to a metal stick through her chest but the (then) new cat is great and has grown soo much and I love her a little bit too much for a cat this is not a healthy relationship AND we've got a new second cat from the shelter and both are having fun together and it's a joy to watch them discover the garden because they've never been outside before and it's wonderful, both are incredibly sweet I couldn't wish for any better cats Thx for 20 likes btw
Currently trying to make my 4 cats to get along. I was living in the city with my two females cats and brought them to my parents house since I will be here for two months, they have 2 male cats and this is the second time they see each other. While two of them are chill and friendly the other two hiss whenever they see each other, the male cats keeps trying to mate but both my female cats are neutered lol...
I'm having to go through this with my bonded pair of litter-mates after the Tom got out for the night. For whatever reason, when he came home in the morning his sister wouldn't have anything to do with him. 😔
Very helpful. We just got a female kitten and my male cat doesn't like her. Shes only here 2 days so really hope he comes around as she is so friendly!
I just allowed my new cats to play together and mingle from the first day itself. Even though it started with hisses and growls , they became friends and started playing together soon. I have a detailed video of that in my channel showing them from day 1 to 7 and after 4 months.
At my house, 'we' are going through the pocess of having two sets of cats getting to know and ajusted to each other. Fortunately I have an upstairs room for one set and the other is in the living room. This way they can decide for themselves to check each other out :) But this video was helpful, though.
Last time I got new cat , I went to the vet and asked them to do this for me , I kept the 2 cats with them for a week ( I was travelling out of country) , when I came back , they are friends and love each other , I don't know what they did in the vet , but it worked , yes we paid for that but it is easier than doing all of this
This would have been impossible for me. My two cats were from the same litter so they knew each other more than they knew me when I adopted them. They still don't get along!
What if my cats have lived together for 2 or 3 years and still don't get along? I've had Cassidy basically since she was weaned, Scout I got from a friend. They're both territorial now. In fact one lives under the bed and the new cat challenges the other one to come out. The only time my original cat (Cassidy) comes out from under the bed is when I'm sitting close to her feeding and watering bowls and she feels Scout (the new cat) isn't a reasonable threat. Scout sees this as her home (territory) now as well. I hate this situation. I know Cassidy does. Do I give one or the other cat away? Or is it not too late to fix the situation? They do fight, allot of times under my bed. Cassidy has resorted to use the bathroom under my bed as well, but Scout uses the litter box no matter how dirty it is. This is another thing I'd love to fix. Cassidy using the litter box just like Scout. Thanks for any advice you can offer! I'm quite familiar with the "STARE DOWN" now. Lol.
We just adopted a rescue,11 year old kitty and brought her home. We have a 20 year old kitty since a kitten. Both Calicos, spayed and declawed. We didn’t go to all the hassle of keeping newcomer separate because our 20 year old isn’t very active, can’t see or hear well, but smell is acute. It has been three weeks now. In the beginning 20 year old knew the other was here but no reaction. Newcomer hisses when around old timer...no attacks, no biting. New kitty ran away. 20 year old knows other kitty here, retreats to upstairs bedroom ( water, food and litter box up there). We really want them to eventually get along..any other suggestions you could offer?
What sucks for me is that I already know all this, but I can't apply any of it effectively because my roommate doesn't give a damn yet her cats bully mine. So glad I'll be moving out soon.
Even though we did the intro here with our older resident alpha cat and the new young one there were still issues. The young dude I guess STILL didn't get it so to speak. The older one, Fluff was patient enough but finally he explained the rules-that FLUFF rules and there was a fight. Kind of like a big rolling ball of cats. They broke apart and Fluff STILL didn't get the look he wanted so round 2. After the dust settled and I separated them for a while all was fine! They even began to snuggle together. Cats don't always follow the videos!
They don't work like that. They aren't people or dogs. If they think the other is a danger to have food, water and a toilet, they will fight. It's your responsibility to make them understand there is no problem, which they do if you give them the time they need. Cats are highly territorial and not pack animals, so it doesn't make sense to them to share, you have to make them understand there is no issue in sharing.
I've been trying this method of introduction for 2 months and no success so far... My old cat still growls at my new kitten :( when site swapping she acts aggressively towards us (the humans) too.... I don't know where to go from here :[
I have decided to adopt the stray cat that came to our yard the whole summer and I fed outside. He slept in my yard almost every night and cried at windows and doors to be allowed inside. My cats fought him through the windows and mosquito nets. Rn the new cat is quarantined at my friend's house after we tested him for viral diseases but when I bring him home i doubt any of this will work. They already seen each other, smelled each other, and fought through windows. So what should I do when I bring the new cat home? I was really thinking to let them solve their differences and maybe eventually end up tolerating each other..?
My sister is getting a new apartment and she invited me to live with her and we both have cats. So both cats have a new home. Do I do the same things like the video?

So do you think it a still work if there is a Lil gap under my door and the cats have semi seen each other. I have tried to hide it but the new cat keep pulling everything I put right there away so you'll see a paw or they have both hunched down and tries to get visual. I have heard the hissing and growling from my resident and twice there has been an attack attempt through the Lil gap. Is it worth it? We got the new cat Dec. 10th

Love this video and the door stopper idea. My 2 yo cat is very slow to meet this new kitten. She lost her older friend few months ago. Although we don't have a spare room, I have the litters big crate in the living room entrance hall.hope the door stopper thing will work.
This was honestly awesome-Thank you....I have hope! AND the comments are AWESOME LOL
the problem is when you only have one bedroom apt it is really hard b/c the resident cat doesn't like not having full access and knows that someone is in that other room; and the resident cat will be unlikely to tolerate being locked in a room!
Nice video! Coul you also do “Introducing children to each other”?
We tried the complicated steps with site swapping, eating split a wall etc. It just made the tension worse for our first cat. After 4-5 days we took the new one into the living room. They were kind of like brothers after 2 days..
OMG I'm so happy reading your comment. My new cats will arrive tomorrow and I have a studio apartment. They are just 7 months old and my current cat 13 years. I didn't want her to be lonely after losing her sister in January and the 2 new ones were born on the street and needed a home. I hope everything goes well tomorrow...
@@Dee8Bee what happened?
Dee8Bee omg you are a saint !
Dammit, those things look so simple to us, and yet it takes them so much time to get along while humans can become friends within minutes !
colasmulot not all cats need this type of gradual introduction, but it's better to be safe than sorry
colasmulot Cats are extremely territorial, and are picky about recognizing others as family.
Are we? the last time I checked everyone was fighting.
The entire palent got crazy...
This is crazy! If I knew I’d have the trouble I’m having, I would never have gotten a new kitten.
This is me right now :/
Yes me right now too
Yeh I’m feeling this right now. How’s it going now?
@@cazmorgan2330 how are you all after day 14? Any better?
@@cherieleeishere not much better I’m afraid. Resident cat is tolerant of new kitten’s existence but hisses and swats at him if he tries to come anywhere near her but we can’t keep him shut in a room all the time and he’s too energetic to let us sleep so we’re shattered. We’re still just trying to be patient and hopeful though 🤞
instructions unclear. I am now a kitty
Cats very wonderful and very nice and so happy
Thankyou you hit some great points here. I soon have to introduce my 2 cats to a New home where their is a resident cat & Im mostly worried about training the people who live their to abide by these rules lol.
one thing very important for cats ........do not put the litter box near their food .....and most important ......DO NOT PUT little bells on neck's cats .....the sound of the bell will drive crazy the cat .....remember ....cats can hear frequencies we can't !!!!
By the way ....thanks for this vid....very helpfull :)
Pl4sm0 good points PL4
Thats the wisest thing I have read in the comments so far.
THCobra yeahhhh, not ideal though. as long as it's kept clean. you wouldn't wanna eat in the bathroom all the time would you? as long as it is always kept clean though
),: aww poop. I really like the cute bell
My cat loves her bell. She follows me when I remove it to clean it and then sits on the side of the sink while I clean it and purrs when I put it back on her.
Thank you for uploading this great educational video.
You lost me at "warsh-cloths"
lol
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
Time stamp ?? 🤣🤣🤣😭
Dead
I was very careless. I have a wonderful cat, who showed up as a stray a couple of years ago. He is very sweet. Another stray showed up and of course, we stuck them together. We are very lucky as they are the best of friends. If I ever get another stray, I'll know what to do next time. Ahah.
I had a feeling I should have done step one, I hope it’s not too late and they can still become acquainted
Are they better now ?
All very helpful. Thank you!
ooo that was a strong “waRsh” someone is from the heartland
The long haired cat is beautiful
This is the most helpful video I found !
I have two boys here and the oldest one still feels threatened and runs away every time he sees the other one...it's been 9 years now 😭
Me and my dad we live in one house but it's separated in two parts.
I live in one part with my boy Ramses, my dad lives in the other part with my boy Bruce.
Bruce is always running, and frightened if he sees Ramses.
I will try the re-introducing but it's already a different situation to start from.
I hope this works somehow.
Did it work?
Any update? Would love to hear the outcome.
Yes would like to know the update
Come back Sammy we gotta know 😭
I know this wasn't the videos intention, but I am sad. I miss my cats... Very informative video.
Day 3:
our 5 year old male cat absolutely hates the new 10 week old female kitten. I think we might have rushed the introduction and cause a bad first impression. We'll go over these steps and hope for the best. If not, we'll have to take her back to the shelter. Please wish us luck.
Day 5:
We keep the kitten in a separate room and don't let her roam around the house.
Any updates?
Awesomeness said 😊 thank you so much
i agree with your methods, and its painful to watch so many videos of people doing it wrong ,and not even doing any corrective discipline when they get aggressive
What kind of corrective discipline? TIA.
The crate technique is terrifying for cats. The cat in the crate feels trapped and will associate each other with fear.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss and am thankful there are caring people out there like you!
AMAZING!!!!!! THIS IS A GREAT EXPLANATION OF CAT INTRODUCTION - SUPER!!
Them: Day 2, everythings fine, everyone loves each other
My cat situation: Day 2, cat lies under my bed and hasn't moved for 20 hours
Update (7 months later):
The older cat has died due to a metal stick through her chest but the (then) new cat is great and has grown soo much and I love her a little bit too much for a cat this is not a healthy relationship AND we've got a new second cat from the shelter and both are having fun together and it's a joy to watch them discover the garden because they've never been outside before and it's wonderful, both are incredibly sweet I couldn't wish for any better cats
Thx for 20 likes btw
Same
I'm sorry your kitty died. I hope the horrible incident was not related to the new cat. Glad these 2 are getting along.
Sfff
Great video, thanks for the tips.
Not everyone has a spare room for the new cat. I live in a small apartment with only one bedroom.
I'm having to go through this with my bonded pair of litter-mates after the Tom got out for the night. For whatever reason, when he came home in the morning his sister wouldn't have anything to do with him. 😔
How are they now?
@@cherieleeishere Thick as thieves, just like they always were before.
Very helpful. We just got a female kitten and my male cat doesn't like her. Shes only here 2 days so really hope he comes around as she is so friendly!
+Stacy Hacker yes Stacey they are fine now snd get along. just took a while!
I just allowed my new cats to play together and mingle from the first day itself. Even though it started with hisses and growls , they became friends and started playing together soon. I have a detailed video of that in my channel showing them from day 1 to 7 and after 4 months.
George BC one of my cats are growling at kitty... really hope they get one ....xx
That isn't the norm with adult cats
At my house, 'we' are going through the pocess of having two sets of cats getting to know and ajusted to each other. Fortunately I have an upstairs room for one set and the other is in the living room. This way they can decide for themselves to check each other out :) But this video was helpful, though.
so how long as in days should pre-introduction and visual introduction take..days?...weeks?
Last time I got new cat , I went to the vet and asked them to do this for me , I kept the 2 cats with them for a week ( I was travelling out of country) , when I came back , they are friends and love each other , I don't know what they did in the vet , but it worked , yes we paid for that but it is easier than doing all of this
Your vet kept the cats overnight for no reason?
What can I do if I already made rushed introductions and my new cat tries to attack my older cat?
I am just about to get a kitten. I have one resident cat that is turning 1. This is going to help very much !
This would have been impossible for me. My two cats were from the same litter so they knew each other more than they knew me when I adopted them. They still don't get along!
Wow never heard of cats from same litter not getting along, i mean it is all they knew since born..
They must have had an abusive mother pitting them against each other instead of showering both with love lol
Habe noch nie ein solches Video gesehen. Mich wundert, dass die Katzen sich nicht gegenseitig verletzt haben.
i just put mine together in a room (with me supervising) and now they love each other 🤷♀️
Way more complicated than it needs to be
The way she pets the cat annoys me in some unexplainable way lol
She does...she pets them like she is trying to pull their skin off
Omfg I just said this is my head xD
Rikka Chan That's because cats build up this inside "energy" when you pet them. You can see that in their tails.
Herp Derp Yes, definitely. Glad to know someone else who understands a cat's body language as well.
Rikka Chan
I thought you learn this stuff before you even get your cat :o
Some people are really irresponsible.
Lol.
"Not all cats can learn to live together peaceably."
Don't they know it's 2019?
@9:35 when the pill was administered... That is something that has NEVER happened in my life, and I've had cats since I was 2 years old! LOL
i don't even own a single cat, let alone two.
How long do each of these steps take and how weeks until they can be together?
Cat time, not human time, as long as it takes for them to get along.
Hmm...Both cats look pissed off at the whole thing. Maybe you should do a follow-up video showing just how you managed to fuck this up so badly.
What sucks for me is that I already know all this, but I can't apply any of it effectively because my roommate doesn't give a damn yet her cats bully mine. So glad I'll be moving out soon.
This is like Alabama/Auburn.
Cats don't always follow the videos!
thank you!
LOL love your description. "Fluff still didnt get the look he wanted so round 2". Priceless
how long can this process take?
Ain't Nobody Got Time For Dat...
Exactly! Let 'em work out their differences. It's less time consuming.
You can still have more than one cat, some cats love company. But you can't just let them work out their differences.
+Pete Fork exactly👍👍
Wael B If you care about them you make time.
My cat did a huge diarrhoea shits in the new cats bowl, it filled the whole bowl
What if the resident cat refuses to approach the cats door regardless of anything you do
I've been trying this method of introduction for 2 months and no success so far... My old cat still growls at my new kitten :( when site swapping she acts aggressively towards us (the humans) too.... I don't know where to go from here :[
Jeez why is cat greetings so difficult?
I've never had a cat before (tho i want to) so this information is new to me..
So what if I made the mistake of letting them make eye contact and my first cat freaked? Can I start over?
I have decided to adopt the stray cat that came to our yard the whole summer and I fed outside. He slept in my yard almost every night and cried at windows and doors to be allowed inside. My cats fought him through the windows and mosquito nets. Rn the new cat is quarantined at my friend's house after we tested him for viral diseases but when I bring him home i doubt any of this will work. They already seen each other, smelled each other, and fought through windows. So what should I do when I bring the new cat home? I was really thinking to let them solve their differences and maybe eventually end up tolerating each other..?
OMG the cat looks like my mom!
Social distancing before it was cool
why is that fluffy one so mean? they are both gorgeous cats.
all that effort and she end up finding the cat a new home xD
My sister is getting a new apartment and she invited me to live with her and we both have cats. So both cats have a new home. Do I do the same things like the video?
My gosh i almost got another cat i wanted to give all my love to another kitty i have my cat for 3 weeks only i think i was rushing a bit im going to hold on ..i just want to give every pet a loving home full of care and love....
I have a one year old cat and I just got a 5week old kitten. The adult cat is curious.. I currently keep them in separate rooms but switch the rooms so they can get used to the cat aroma scent. Hope they can get used to it & get along. I won't give away any of my cats
10th
