In the late '80's Carpenter signed a four-picture deal with ALIVE Films. The first two were Prince of Darkness and They Live (both distributed by Universal). Now, how I understand it, something fell apart between JC and ALIVE, and they went to court for years. Finally, a compromise was made that JC only had to direct one more film for them instead of two. Village of the Damned (also by Universal) was that film. It was a contractual obligation for JC.

Good review! TBH? I haven't thought about this film in ages, but do recall seeing it in the theater, and perhaps that creepy set up and this being one of Christopher Reeve's last performances prior to his accident are what I most remember.
It was creepy when they showed the miscarried alien baby in a vat, that part had an eerie score and ominous blue lighting, as well as Christopher Reeve looking creeped out.

There's nothing wrong with that; I just hadn't done one of those in a long time. If you make a movie over $10 million, you have got to try to reach out to the broadest audience you can find. If you make it under $10 million, you're able to make it more quirky, more daring, more subversive, if you want to use that word. That's the joy of low-budget filmmaking. You can be tough, you can be down, you can be all sorts of things that from a business standpoint you can't do when you get over a certain budget." So that’s explains some of it.
I went through carpenters films a few months ago. Once the 90s hits it gets rough. The only exceptions being vampires and in the mouth of madness. Two awesome movies.
Dude, it was May 1995-- I'm 18 years old and stoned AF and me and a buddy start watching this movie. When everyone in the town passes out I legit freaked out. The same thing happened to me when I watched In the Mouth of Madness and the scene with the ax wielding guy happened; where he smashes the restaurant window. Fucked. Me. Up. Anyway, great analysis/review as always my guy!
I read the novel about twenty years ago. As I recall, it was indeed aliens that had impregnated the women in order to have their offspring raised in human society. The novel is called "The Midwich Cuckoos". In reference to Cuckoo birds that lay their eggs in other birds nests so they don't have to be bothered raising them.
Definitely not one of his best movies while I like John Carpenter. I honestly only love maybe 8 of his movies, but most of those 8 movies I would put in my top 100 movies of all times, though. Love the content man
I love this movie. In my view, the kids were definitely creepy. Much creepier than things now where the kids say they see something adults cant see and we are supposed to find that creepy
*The plot of this movie was good but the execution wasn't great. One thing that bug me, was if the aliens had technology to instantly put people.. out, with pinpoint control on a town to town radius. Why do they need to do all this extra shit to take over the world?*
I used to watch this movie all the time as a child back when I used to live in Mexico. They would play it on tv all the time in Spanish and it would creep me out every time. For some reason I don't have it labeled as a "bad movie" but again I have not watched it since 2001.. 😅
When it comes to creepy kid movies, try and find Bloody Birthday. It's on DVD, and trust me: you want to own it. And I'd love to hear your take on this gloriously sick puppy. Just adopt the same attitude that works the best when confronting Shyamalan's The Happening: treat it like a comedy. It's a riot.
You know that is true about how you need to take the evil child in these evil child movies, and actually have times they seem normal. Take the 1970s version of The Omen for example. Yeah, Damien is evil, the audience knows from the beginning that Damien is evil, but he still has moments where he seems like an innocent kid so much so, you can understand why Gregory Peck could think that maybe they're wrong. That's the key to doing it, still have moments of doubt in them by the way the kid or in this case kids act. Anyways, sorry that you're now at the lower points of Carpenter's career. But getting there though. Been an interesting ride. Thank you, Cody.
The one thing I love about your channel is when u say things I just can't believe like u have never seen his Superman movies u follow it up with a clip that's hilarious
I like Carpenter's Vampires...Valek(the main Vampire)was awesome, loved his look, clothes and all. Would have loved to see a newer version showing more of the Vampire hunters doing different missions or Valeks back story. But yea that dude played an awesome Vampire and the other 'master' Vampires were also cool as hell, just seemed too short or stuck too much in one environment/setting
I saw this movie as a kid, and it creeped me out. It's one of many movies I refuse to revisit as an adult because I know my memories of them would be ruined if I did. It's the same reason I refuse to go to Shoneys and Dennys as an adult 😂. On another note, Christopher Reeve is so charming as Superman, and I can't wait for you to review the series.
I actually like this one a lot, but didn't really care for it when it came out. It's a simple story, with pretty simple effects, and I don't really hate that considering how many films are pretty try-hard today. I think the adults actually sell it pretty hard. It's the opposite of The It mini series, where the kids sell it and the adults feel off. I don't know, I don't hate it. I'm not rushing my friends to go out and watch it right now so we can talk about it, but I enjoy watching it by myself every now and again.
Haha, I love this movie, but agree with a lot of your points. It seems to take a campy approach while trying to tackle serious issues such as postnatal depression, and the look of the kids was badly miscalculated. But Reeve is great, and I think Linda Kozlowski is as well. And the scene with the mother putting her arm in the boiling water...makes my gut churn! There was a recent mini-series based on the book, which I need to check out.
I love it just because of Christopher Reeve and John carpenter combined I also think after the 80s and most of his movies failing and then years later becoming famous classics is the reason he did so many movies that he didn't care proably plays a big part in his attitude as whell

You think you’ll review Body Bags in your John Carpenter review series? Body Bags is an anthology movie with three stories. John Carpenter directed the first two and Tobe Hooper directed the third. Carpenter even stars in the movie as a crypt keeper-like character. I just seen it for the first time a couple days ago and loved it.
Cody Leach. You better get on the Christopher Reeve Superman films. The first two are some of the best superhero movies ever. Also, I am looking forward to seeing you ramble about Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987), and tear the film apart. 😏
I think a remake would be cool, but expand past the kids. Either them transition into teenagers or start the movie with them as kids, but keep it going until they get older into teenagers...or show the one kid who lived as an adult and maybe he has a kid who eventually gets older and then the aliens come back. Would be cool to see Brandon Routh as Chris Reeves character only because he can play Chris so damn well, but that would be too on the nose lol
I always loved the original black and white version but it’s a period piece of its time. I was so disappointed in this version because the premise is really disturbing. With what they can do with film, effects, makeup. This could be remade into a really tense, eerie, gory, tragic, heroic movie. I would have to insist on bleaching the hell of the actors natural hair though because the wigs are awful.
The best brood of creepy killer kids was The Brood. I saw Village when it came out and I remember being disappointed. I think John Carpenter put all his passion into The Thing and its failure and his subsequent treatment by the studios really started killing his enthusiasm.
Maybe it's just me but I actually like Village of the Damned more so than I do for Children of the Corn. I kinda get those two mixed up but Village of the Damned is just a cool sinister film that has its charm IMO
The pregnacy scenes were disturbing. I am a man but I almost felt that. Funny Buck Flower cameo. There's some strong social commentary. I thought it was a protest against emotionless new generations, which you see everywhere these days. All I see now is phone-zombies. They'll do NOTHING to help you. Empathy is fucking dead.
I didn't really like this movie for the longest time, but it slowly grew on me. I did expect more out of JC and thought his reimaging would bring more to the table. After all, the last remake we got from him was The Thing. JC coming in late with someone else's vision does explain quite a bit, but on it's own its a decent film. imo. Sort of representative of Carpenters mid to late 90's work, which I'd describe as okay to middling. Wish he'd come back for one more go at it, but I think JC is happy watching basketball, playing video games and seeing lesser directors fuck up his work
Apparently, Cody I have done research on this film, which I enjoyed but agree with you that it isn't really special. However, from what I heard from actor Peter Jason on my ShoutFactory Blu-ray, John and Christopher had a lot of arguments and creative differences and he would have to got into their trailers and be a mediator for the two. So, that maybe akin to why the film is so banal. I think Christopher Reeve, Thomas Dekker and Lindsey Haun give some outstanding performances and I love the last 20 minutes of the film and you got George Buck Flower and Peter Jason, Carpenter's go to guys in it. Nice nod to Above Suspicion, where he becomes paralyzed and just a few days after shooting post production, he sadly had his accident, crippling him and leading to his demise. It's all gonna go in my horror movie coincidence book and UA-cam channel. I loved that movie. Good work and good luck and keep them coming.
Dude I saw this movie when I was a small kid and it marked me for life I thought it was the most scary movie ever then I saw the exorcist and yeah I died.
I just watched it today and I feel a bit sad that this movie gets hate. It’s by no means one of the higher works of a true horror king but it is also actually a pretty solid film. I won’t be fighting and dying in war to defend this movie but if there’s one thing I will praise from the film, it’s always going to be the festival scene. That moment was a piece of peak Carpenter cinema. It was shocking, intense, suspenseful and mysterious. I haven’t seen the original so maybe it’s a different experience for other people who knew it would happen but the certainly doesn’t change how amazing and impactful it was for me. That was truly an incredible opener.
My love for this movie mostly comes from nostalgia. I know technically it's a dud. But I used to watch it on cable a lot as a kid so I can't completely hate it now. I bought the dvd at a pawn shop for $2 and I'll still watch it occasionally. Definitely not one of Carpenter's best though. Not by a long shot.
Cody, do you have a day for when your John Carpenter ranking planned? I’ve been watching through his filmography over the last few months to participate in that ranking. I just want to know when you plan on dropping that video so I can have a deadline to finish up my watch through.
I enjoy this movie, it is definitely not there with the thing but I think it’s a good watch. I think the subdued nature of the kids presents the point. They aren’t really sinister which leaves you wondering if they can be changed.
I grew up watching this movie as a child and loved it because I looked like these kids lol. Bleach blonde hair, bright blue eyes and pale white skin lol.
I know carpenter directed this movie but any time I've watched it I do not get that carpenter feel from it. The world building and implied back stories to characters and the want to know more about what's going on. I get none of that from this movie.
This film is not a classic by any means but it is poignant that it was one of the great Christopher Reeve's last films before his accident. Watching this always makes me sad for that reason. There will NEVER be another Superman like Chris Reeve!
I'm actually good with this one. Considering how much better his version of The Thing was to the original, I had high expectations for this that it did not meet. It wasn't better than the original. but I thought it was pretty much equal. It's not in my top tier of Carpenters.
This was my fever dream movie, I saw it as a kid and for so long never knew the name of it so I wasn't sure if it was real lol. It gave me such a creepy feeling when I was a kid, I'd be real interested to see if it could do the same now
I remember going to see a double feature back in the day of this and the kids movie, Casper. Why they had those two together, I still can't explain lol
That eye doctor kill was stupid as the doctor was dumb for hurting the girl with window cleaner drops before getting her come up-pants. RIP Christopher Reeve.
The eye doctor didn't get killed? They mention after the event the eye doctor had damage to her eyes that she'll never recover from, not that she died lol. Not everyone around the children would die, some would just suffer permanent injuries
One of Carpenter’s weakest movies for me. Its not the worst, but its probably the most dull. Will you be doing a full Carpenter ranking after you’ve reviewed them all? Maybe get a few of the lads together for a stream and joint ranking? That would be THE BEST 😉
I can't believe Sean Chandler hasn't sat you down and made you watch Superman 1 & 2 by now. Lol. He loves those movies! That's all you really need to watch also. Superman 3 & 4 are pretty terrible.

I still think it was good. I watched this and the original back to back and found myself interested in both takes on the source material
I seen a portion of the original VOTD but I haven't finished it because I lost my mood immediately. Does it get better in the rest of the film?
@@jarg8 I wasn't talking about the Carpenter version.
Have you ever reviewed Sleepwalkers? Thats one id like a see a remake done...perhaps show their past, thatd be pretty sweet
Wish he'd come back for one more go at it, but I think JC is happy watching basketball, playing video games and seeing lesser directors fuck up his work
It was on Starz all the time
Only seen this one once and that was enough. Promising start but it goes downhill fast.
I did watch this movie. I still enjoy this movie whenever I watch it. I think this version is a remake
Can’t wait till you review The Escape From LA
How about a Superman review series, Cody? No time like the present.
Christopher reeve last film before his accident.
All in favor of cody doing a retrospect on Superman (1978) say I
I 😊
Village of the Damned (1995) i love this movie i give it A+ Do Not Skip It
My love for this movie mostly comes from nostalgia. I know technically it's a dud. But I used to watch it on cable a lot as a kid so I can't completely hate it now. I bought the dvd at a pawn shop for $2 and I'll still watch it occasionally. Definitely not one of Carpenter's best though. Not by a long shot.
Thanks for the review playa 🤞🏻
I actually really like this one alot. Not one of his best but a solid second tier movie from john Carpenter
Cody, do you have a day for when your John Carpenter ranking planned? I’ve been watching through his filmography over the last few months to participate in that ranking. I just want to know when you plan on dropping that video so I can have a deadline to finish up my watch through.
Hi codyyy can u do a video of all your favorite to non favorite blumhouse movies and if u ever watched truth or dare can u review it🥰🥰 love yaaa
I love the original so much and I do like this movie but your right Cody this movie should be remade in this Era if done right.
You’ve gotta watch Somewhere In Time. My favorite Christopher Reeve film. Very cool take on time travel.
Hey Cody, have you ever seen Nightbreed? It’s an older one that people tend to love or hate. Just curious on your thoughts if you’d seen it.
I liked it as a kid but rewatched it as an adult and it didn’t do much for me.
This is near the very bottom of my Carpenter list. It's the only movie from his that I had to watch in 2 viewings because I kept falling asleep.
Please tell me that these Carpenter reviews mean a ranking is coming 😍😍
I'm actually good with this one. Considering how much better his version of The Thing was to the original, I had high expectations for this that it did not meet. It wasn't better than the original. but I thought it was pretty much equal. It's not in my top tier of Carpenters.
This was my fever dream movie, I saw it as a kid and for so long never knew the name of it so I wasn't sure if it was real lol. It gave me such a creepy feeling when I was a kid, I'd be real interested to see if it could do the same now
The only JC movie that I really hate is Ghost of Mars, this is one of his weaker movies, but I thought it was decent.
I remember going to see a double feature back in the day of this and the kids movie, Casper. Why they had those two together, I still can't explain lol
This was a wasted opportunity. Could have been good. Waiting for the Day of the Triffids remake.
You should have check out the 1960 version as the kids look more creepy-looking in that film than they do in the remake.
Oof, what are you doing taking sponsorship from TEMU dude?
@Cody agree with everything you said here both good and bad this feels like his least effort film to me as well
