I met him twice in my life at his camp. The first was at a lecture he gave directly after flying home from the 1st Goodwill games in Moscow in 1986. The following summer at his camp a few of us wandered into his office. He was at his desk. Busted! He invited us in to look around and it was amazing -like a museum. Dan Gable is a great man and an American hero. I'll never forget him as long as I live.
I knew that he was a beast, but after seeing this video, he seems almost supernatural. Dan Gable wrestles at a continuous, aggressive, and consistent pace
The Munich Olympics were broadcast in color and 99% of people had color TVs in 1972. Curiously, because VCRs were still new and hadn't hit the mainstream market yet, they were horrendously expensive so only rich people had them. Which begs the question, why was this recorded in black&white? What I also don't understand is that there are plenty videos of every other athlete from the '72 Olympics posted on UA-cam so why so few of Dan Gable, the greatest wrestler in history?
How did you find this?? Thank you so much for posting this. I believe it is very important footage, and compared to all the team/big money sports that have volumes of history recorded for people, this is very rare stuff. Any more older wrestling films like this will be greatly appreciated.
With modern video enhancement, I wonder if they can make films like this better? After all, I don't know if anyone, ever so dominated their Olympic Wrestling journey. I think?, not sure, but think Gable is the only man who won the Gold with not ONE point scored against him the entire tournament.
No your right. Dan Gable is the only guy to win the Olympics without giving up a single point. The closest anyone has come was Tom Brands, Brands gave up one point in the Olympics
I like the new rules of wrestling much better than the old ones .. black marks?! 9 minutes matches ....WTF?! Technical superiority/match termination a bonus. The 2 out of 3 format with ball grab from pouch to determine clutch/leg grab was ridiculous AF. But Gable, Douglas , Petersons, Wells, Carr, Sanders, Hellickson, Kemp, many others survived the madness..

3-3 minute matches. These guys were amazing.
I've been looking for Gable matches forever. Thanks for the post!
Great to see Gable in action, thanks for the post
Dan Gable and Ali Afshar are the most technical wrestlers I've ever seen. And they both are FAST. Lightning fast.

One of the best to ever touch the mat
Very unfortunate the match between him and movahed didn't happen movahed was 6 times world and Olympic champion he got injury in first round
Would have been a great match. Movahed was awesome.
So slick 'n solid.
world class ankle pick made simple at time of 2:25
@Money Making 👍 Cake, carry, shuck, duck, pick, sweep, drag and tackle.
Did Gable go un-scored on for the entire Olympics 🤯
Is it just me or did they give them a lot more time on the mat back then?
the commentators are giving him props for not getting pinned. haha
A bad mark for beating your opponent 17-0 is nuts

Go watch him on the joe rogan podcast. Thanks for the post
Gable isn’t rated as the NUMBER 1 wrestler of all time. He lost one match in his career? I don’t understand the ranking.
