Two legendary and great American wrestler but the fact is Gable is not the only wrestler from any country not to be scored upon in winning the Olympics. Osamu Watanabe from Japan won the Olympics in wrestling in 1964 and went 186-0 in his career he also won 2 world wrestling titles. But check this out the guy was never scored upon in 186 matches!! No one has ever come close to topping that but it was so long ago and he was not from the US so not many people remember him but he was untouchable.

As an 18-year-old sophomore, he earned national recognition by defeating legendary Dan Gable and went on to win three straight NCAA Championships at 158 pounds, while compiling an impressive record of 108-0-1. Kemp concluded his career as a Badger with a final mark of 143-6-1, including a streak of 87 straight victories and an unbeaten string of 103 consecutive matches. That streak is fourth-best in NCAA history along with his winning percentage of .953.

Practice at Eastlake North preparing for districts, my husband (Kirtland wrestler) had to work out with Kemp. He said, "I shot in on his leg for a single leg, and it was like grabbing a statue....nothing moved lol" He was promptly crossfaced and got a bloody nose, but still brags "HE DIDN"T PIN ME" haha

I just watched the documentary on Lee Kemp. While I can see what a big deal it was, I was definitely under the impression that Kemp destroyed him when it was a lot closer. Maybe it didn't matter how close it was since 18 year old Kemp defeated a living legend.

Wow! Does this bring back memories!!! Was at this meet, watched this match live and, even though he had been out of competition for a couple of years and Kemp was an absolute BEAST, couldn't believe what I was seeing. Kemp, while not one of the "all time greats", was a GREAT wrestler and won more than a few titles for the UW and the USA. No shame in that. AND won this match, fair and square, effectively ending Gable's thoughts of coming back. No small accomplishment.

Many people also forget to mention Wade scahlles as one of the greats. He has the gussiness book record with most pins and matches. They named the most pins in college award after him. He is a 4 time National Champ He won both divison 2 and 1 titles in the same years. He is the guy who invented the spladel he is also one of the all time greats with all the others. If you really know wrestling and not only stories from others then you would know him too..

In Gable's final 21 Olympic qualification and Olympic matches, he scored 12 falls and outscored his nine other opponents, 130-1. The single point being scored by Larry Owings, who defeated Gable in his final collegiate match.
He's the best of ALL TIME. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Dan Gable was the man who made wrestling what it is. He was the first to go his entire high school carrier withiut a loss and only lost 1 match in college with 3 NCAA championships. Granted there are many wrestlers that have done so after him but he set the bar. The one bar that has still been left to beat is the 72 olympics where he went without a point against him. He is the only wrestler alive to do so in any country so thats what makes him the best....

As far as Dan Gable making wrestling what is today, that is true, he was centured for playing favorites during USA team selctions. Imagine all the great wrestler we never got to see compete. Lee Kemp was one of America's Great Wrestlers. Imagine he defeated Dan Gable as an 18 year old young man and went on to be a 4 time NCAA Finalist (3 time champ) and win three time World Champion. I imagine in1976 Gables weight class was not really that tough or maybe Lee could have won the Olympics at 17.

@@yahopostinguy429 don’t think I’m calling Lee bad. Lee is p4p one of the greatest of all time, but I just think prime for prime, Gable would win. And no I don’t think that was Lee’s best, but it’s just like what happened with Lee and Schultz. Lee would’ve destroyed Dave Schultz in his prime, he just happened to wrestle whenever he was out of his prime, and Schultz was rising into his prime. Personally I think Lee could’ve been the Ali or Michael Jordan of wrestling, it’s just that due to politics and all the other things that happened, we never got to see how good he truly was, the only thing we have is the world championships. Also considering Schultz went on to win the gold medal in 1984, I think it’s safe to say considering Schultz didn’t beat Lee by much, Lee would’ve won both in 1980 and 1984

Guy was absolutely in his prime, I have met both gable and kemp, in fact I've had both of them place medals around my neck. Talked to both of them about this match and gable simply said "he bested me simple as that and I got right back to work" if you really think gable wasn't at his best then you're wrong. Gable never had a worst. Maybe other than his last match in college. Discrediting someone beating a legend just shows poor sport on your end and neither gable nor kemp would have ever used "he wasn't at his best" as an excuse.

Dan Gable had a perfect score in the Olympic
    Cael Sanderson never lost
John Smith won more Gold medals than anyone else
Who gives a shit? People can argue that Dan Gable is better than Cael Sanderson, or that John Smith is better than them, etc. But they're all a fuck ton better than you. Siding with any of them doesn't make you a part of their success.
Enjoy the beautiful privilege to watch them. Don't disgrace the sport by staging imaginary bouts and predicting the results.
