✅ I WENT TO TERMINAL 21 FOOD COURT & WAS SHOCKED! | Street Food Bangkok Thailand

- What exactly is Bangkok street food in 2022? l visited that famous shopping mall food court, Terminal 21, where many say is classic Bangkok Street Food & I got a shock! Sukhumvit Road is visited by thousands daily for their fix of cheap Bangkok street food but great quality food BUT with the death of the local street food scene in Asok, many are tricked into thinking this is real street food thanks to many videos and social media posts. I recommend an ideal local alternative to this soulless, bland commercial experience, Suda Restaurant across the road is the one place keeping the local street food scene alive in tis area!

I’ve eaten at Terminal 21 once and it was OK as I was passing time at the complex. With Suda Restaurant now you’re talking! Everytime I go there there’s an anticipation of going somewhere that’s authentic and doesn’t change. The food is fantastic and this place is my absolute favourite whenever I visit Bangkok. Thanks for giving this wonderful place a nice shout out. I appreciate that, Pat 👍🏾
I had food poisoning in Thailand once , never in India or China.
Yes, it seems like every visitor to Thailand under age 30 is now a UA-cam travel blogger. No one can replace “Bangkok Pat”.
I've never gotten sick eating in the streets of Thailand, but in China and India it was a total sh*tshow, like nothing I've ever experienced. Thailand always comes out on top.
Absolutely
Even in Taiwan I had problems
That’s good your stomach can handle Thai. I do pray for mine 😂 sometimes but now I choose place I’m sure to not blow the bowl!
Same here. The only time I got really sick after eating food in Thailand was in Hua Hin in a Scandinavian Burger Restaurant (no other places were open in the morning).
Thai Food never gave me problems. India I haven't been to, but I would like.
China I had no problems with food.
The only other two places I got sick from food were Egypt, Tunisia, and..... London (in an Indian restaurant)...
The most risky place to be food sick is a tourist restaurant, if you see locals eating and pan's are Clean enough it's ok. Look also for how there bought big water bottles and you know that even that Is used instead of tap water to prepare the food and so on.
I love both the classic street food vendors AND Terminal 21 food court. But I understand your point of view Pat. Cheers 😎
This is a thoughtful, high-quality, channel and the host is articulate and good-looking.
I agree. Street Food must be eaten at Street Level. Oh, at 2:51 i can see InVite Bar&Grill , my favourite Hang out drink some Gin and Tonics . Thank you
No surprise that you're a purist when it comes to street food Pat. 😄 I agree though, food courts aren't really street food. Even though I think they're great and really convenient, it's just a different experience.
Thank you Pat. We went to Suda yesterday based on this video we saw when you first released it. My wife and I both agree there is no exaggeration here. The food was as spectacular as the facility itself. Staff was great and prices crazy low. We will go back again before we leave Bangkok next week.
Thanks again for all your work. We love your videos. Informative and entertaining!.
Thanks Joe, great to hear that, there are four well fed cats at Suda's too! They prowl around for mice!
My first visit to Sudas was in the late 70s or early 80s, when I joined some work colleagues for a beer, beef salad, fried cashews with chiles, salt and green onions after work - one of us lived on Soi 14. Thereafter we met frequently even on weekends for a meal. I now often travel to Thailand and always find time to stop at Sudas. It's still in business all these years and that should tell you something about the quality of food and service.
02:50 haha, I admire your sense of humor. Great video and the idea behind it!
This is why I watch your channel! Totally agree that’s not real street food. The one and only time I decided to peak into Icon Siam I was horrified by the fake street food and fake floating market.. seeing how that is pushed for tourists while the real markets fade away . I used the toilet and left without spending a dime in there.
They aren't touting that floating market as the genuine article which is refreshing.
Leaving bkk tomorrow after seeing ‘ my friend ‘. Are lot of good street food places .. all I can say really is I will be back in 3/4 months. We had a really good time ..
You are the real one Pat!
Love your content, very professional. I could be watching a doco on mainstream tv and it wouldn’t be as good as you Pat . Keep it up mate .
Suda still going strong. Good to see 👌. First ate there about 15 years ago.
Maybe a map of the best toilets on sukhumvit ! 🤣
I'm working on thar Tony
great point corporate street food --We have been visiting Bangkok for over 20 years and ate some of the most exciting dishes of our lives however we did get sick 1 time and it was totally our fault farangs should not eat prepared food that is sitting around in trays bacteria grows fast and we cannot handle the bacteria hot out of the wok is the way to go and if your worried about 10 baht or so in price why are you in Bangkok ? street food vendors in my opinion work hard to make a profit and most take pride in the product they offer not to mention the powers that be are changing the landscape of Bangkok so remember eating on the street puts money directly in the pocket of these street vendors and hopefully keep this great tradition alive
I stumbled upon Suda about 11 years ago when I was introduced to the old Hemmingways pub that used to be opposite. I too can recommend it & I live in Bangkok with my Thai wife - we mostly eat Thai food. Suda isn't flashy or trendy, it's just yummy.
Did you like Hemmingway's?
@@steveaustin1984 absolutely - Friday nights often began there but it was also a place to chill for an evening
Thanks Pat for introducing Suda. Food certainly looks more appetising. Will try out next time. I stayed at Terminal 21 and found the food court convenient. Cheap and hygienic (for this reason). 👍
I love suda's, perfect for late dinners too
I recall going to Terminal 21 in Pattaya not long after opening; TGF told me it was great place to eat. No chance, left after 10 minutes. I've never had problems with street food for two reasons - I only eat fresh cooked and still hot food and avoid all seafood.
Thanks for highlighting the well venerable Suda restaurant. It is my go-to place whenever I visit Bangkok. The interior is old style and hardly changed since my first visit there in 1999. The food selection is great and the service is varied depending on the peak periods when it gets really busy. Suda is highly recommended. I’ve been to Terminal 21 shopping mall, but it’s the case of passing through. I would never eat there. I would eat at Tips on the lower ground floor at Robinson’s occasionally. Thanks once again.
WOW we will be in Bangkok October 27 2022 and our condo rental is just a few steps from Suda Restaurant I was checking their menu a few day ago Thank you for information
I learned to start eating yogurt when I first arrive and have no problem. The only 2 times in the last 12 years I had problems is when I ate fresh fruit or vegetable’s that may have been cleaned with water that was not filtered.
Good idea, they say yakult is good for that.
Many of the wendors in terminal 21 have moved their buisness indoor after their original lease was terminated on the street. There are wendors in terminal 21 that was earlier located in soi 38 and also from soi 7. They are paying lease and % of their turnover. I think terminal 21 and such places are a good option to the original street food espesially during the rainy season.
Totally agree.
I use to to live next door and I used to eat at the restaurants in T-21 . My friends like the food court so I went a couple times, I did not like the food and if you look around the pots, and food containers you see nothing but roaches 🪳. The street food is dangerous, I usually watch the preparation when they first get out there and I watch how they maintain and clean everything. They use only cold water, and they wash everything with the contaminated water while the pots and pans lay on the sidewalk. I did have my fruit, vegetable, and chicken guys, I got to know them in my neighborhood. I knew when they arrived and I would go get my stuff fresh. The Nicest people they remembered how I like everything cut and what spices I did not want. They took care of me and I took care of them. When I moved to another neighborhood. I would come back and visit and give them my business.
Bangkok Pat,I agree 100% to what you said,I have been there, and it’s so crowded, and not my coup of tea,I love the simple, cheap, and more authentic, and not posh or fancy,in any way.😊
Couldn't agree more.. street food is what Thailand is about especially Bkk.. cheers
Love it Pat..
Thanks Will
Thanks Pat - I like it, reminds me of the old place on Soi 7 across from the German Beer Garden. I miss those places - Good Times.
Your comments are noted on Mall "stalls". I do like them a lot for several reasons, clean running water to wash food, utensils, hands (especially with all foodborne illness), and airconditioned areas to eat. There are my favorite street restaurants (holes in the wall) which I like and become faves but I am picky of street food and market fairs that don't have any area to maintain food safety as well as hygiene. Not thumbing my nose at those who like the street food, but as you get older your constitution, isn't as cast iron as it was when you were younger especially with other illnesses. Still there is still a lot street stalls to go to in Chinatown, all over holes in the wall places, with a proper toilet, that will always be a go to food choice for me. One more important note, the food fairs are growing which is where you will eventually see the food stalls eventual gather and sell their wares. The issue of taking up space in crowded and broken down sidewalks are the primary reason the Thai government is moving to clear walkways. When street carts take up space not just sidewalks but even roadways city government has no other choice but to clear walkways.
I ate at suda the first time in 1987, a swede embassy employee recommended it, at the time it was popular with scandinavians. Ate there last trip to Bangkok and it was still good price and taste. Well recommended Pat
Cheers Tito. Good place it sure is!
Love eating at Suda it is one of my goto places to eat...
Hard to fault that place!
Great little video Pat. In pre-Covid days if I was in Bangkok, I often found that Suda was so full you couldn't get a table hence a trip across the road to Terminal 21. Your video was a great memory jogger as I had kind of forgotten about Suda 🤣.
I saw in another video that the street vendors who were displaced when Terminal 21 was built were allowed to move in rent free and that is the reason the prices are so good. Is this no longer the case? Are those vendors gone now?
I"d be surprised if that were so, tho they'd need a lot of somewhat experienced cooks for that court. Would you rather work for McDonald's or have your own diner?
Love this. Keep the culture alive. 👍🙏
Totally agree. Food court is fast n easy. It’s just more fun to eat at the street.
Pat, Nice you Promote Restaurant Suda. I have eat many times at Suda and Like the Food always. 👍🙏
I think it's a good place with consistently good food.
I’ve never been sick eating street food but my mum and her friends get sick eating in 5 star hotels,,,great video again Pat
It's a gamble in many foreign countries. I heard that you're given dysentary at passport control as you enter Egypt so you can get it over with at the start of your trip.
Good review, I will try Suda next time I am in Bangkok. I had an excellent meal at Terminal 21 last month, it was cheap, tasty and clean. But I do love the street food in Bangkok. I remember the area next to the Central World across from the Big C it had excellent street seafood (Thanon Ratchadamri), too bad that area was closed by the elevated sidewalks. In 17 years of eating street food in Bangkok, I haven't gotten sick once.
I found Suda's thank you for the recommendation
I remember when there were a number of food vendors on Soi 18 and Sukhumvit road. They are all gone. I was kind of surprised.
Totally agree on Terminal 21. It looked like feeding in industrial agriculture. I was having no part of THAT!
Also never had any issues with street food, but then I had vaccination against Tyfoid, Cholera and Hep A&B beforehand.
Good points Pat. Terminal 21 has great prices and selection but the portions are not the most impressive. I've been to that restaurant you recommended before and the portions are awesome and packed with flavor. It's important for tourists to support the smaller local street food restaurants too! 😎
I visited the Suda Restaurant the same day this video was released
it is quite nice and authentic
I was greeted by a very nice old lady with perfect red nail polish, she even took my order when waitresses were busy with other customers
I agree with you Pat, also many of the Mall based food outlets are factory processed pre-made frozen food and reheated - not like real street food
I like street food but also a great fan of food courts ever since discovering the Ambassador Food Court on my first day in Bangkok in 1987. Anyone else remember it?
Usually genuine street food vendors can be found down the little soi's off the main roads and have been trading for many years
ive always wondered, are the stalls at chatuchak alright to eat at or not.
Mostly l would say yes. As with most street food, stick to the well frequented places.
You are right many people live their lives through UA-camrs. They do not realise what they are missing, you just need to be careful and take it slowly. Follow that rule and then can enjoy Thai food in all its wonderful taste, smell and texture.
Absolutely Geoff.
Thanks for this... I haven't returned to Thailand for 12 years, and I read they removed the street food carts all over Bangkok - huge bummer!!!. Street food was one of the important reasons for visiting Thailand for me - I will arrive in Bangkok next week for a visit, and will definitely patronize the restaurant you promoted... Thanks again
Tip: Pier 21 has amazing coffee shop called Lalla Cafe. That café in my opinion beats Amazon café and 7-11. Much cheaper too. Best place to drink latte or americano after street food nearby.
Now that is a good tip 👍🏼
I enjoy street food but sometimes go to terminal 21 for lunch as i simply like the air conditioning during the mid day heat. I'm definitely going to check out Suda on my next visit, looking like March next year. Thanks for the tip !
Suda is the only outdoor place I'll eat at in Bangkok, food always good and never been sick. Evenings in Tourist season you'll have wait as expected, as they get very busy.
Although I've enjoyed the terminal 21 food court several times I've never considered it street food any more than the Matterhorn at Disneyland to be Switzerland.
Thanks Pat for the quick informative video. I think time of day is important. I never eat street food in the afternoons or late at night particularly in regard to pre- cooked. I.e. fried chickens, duck, seafood etc. Means it's been sitting around unsold for too long after the main rushes are over at lunchtime or early evening. Cheers
Charcoal tablets are a must, also cheap next to the till at every 7-11
To have on standby?
@@BangkokPat 100% you've obviously been in that zone 🤢
I love street food but I'm wary of it. My visits to Thailand are all too brief, and don't want to waste precious days feeling crook. Thanks for the Suda recommendation, that's one to remember.
I like terminal 21 food court but what do I know about tbai food.
Great street food tips Pat! I always need about 3 days to get acclimated to the food and the weather. Terminal 21 food court is one of my go-to's in those first 3 days, and yes, it's good shopping mall food. Then I'll venture out for street food.
I've never had problems with street food, however the one time I had food poisoning was when I had some barbecued prawns at a 5-star hotel in Asoke area. I had to go the toilet so many times which gave me a new appreciation for the water hose.
First went to
BKK 1991, been many times since, back in 3 weeks, never been, seen or heard of Suda, so big thanks.
Food looks fantastic.
Also like others have said, never been ill in Thailand from street food.
Cambodia or India though😠
Preaching to the choir Mr Pat… Thanks 🙏🏼
Never gotten sick eating street food in Malaysia. Thailand street food is hit or miss on food safety.
More 70’s inspired carry on music Pat.. love it
Is it true they have different prices for Thai and foreigners?
No that's usually only claimed in clickbait videos
@@BangkokPat thanks!
Suda has my vote as well! Might be a little wait as she is so busy now but its worth it trust me
They get rushed off their feet but l always get the cats investigating me when l sit down, which passes the time with a cold one...
nice video,i want to go there!
I do both...no problem with either.
Aloha Pat! I love Terminal 21 and visit/eat there 5 days of a week during my holiday; food is good and the chances for meeting cute girls is very positive! ;) Oh I had to break out with a laugh when you said "your bubble of Starbucks, shopping malls, health spas, lux beach resorts and co-working spaces"... that's me!! And yes, I have and do still say I'd never eat street food in a million years! Okay, I'll give in... when I make the move to Bangkok, I'll have to give them a try. By the way, I found Suda restaurant by accident, but I didn't stop in because I was searching for Korea Town for my dinner (K-Town is fantastic!). Bill
You can still find streetfood around there in soi 16 at foodland
Thanks Pat for your video..
I have never gotten sick from Thai street food wether in BKK or any other city in Thailand.
Now let me sit you down ....I have gotten extremely sick after eating in well presented restaurants...many many times.
Tip to tourists....when you go into a restaurant...check the toilets and cleanliness....if dirty not maintained leave immediately....
It will save you because if they can’t get that right then it makes you know the hygiene practices of the kitchen....
BTW this still goes for Farang owned restaurants as well😅
Great tip - thank you!
The 5th floor food court in T21 is nothing short of a godsend, IMHO.
As to Suda, I used to eat there with my friends years ago and we really enjoyed it. Often we'd be visited by a "passing" elephant (now outlawed in BKK).
street food go go pat..i m waiting..will come bkk when air tickets drop. coming from SG...SOON.
Totally agree Pat always loved Suda
Ahh Suda always popular with westerners living there, I remember Miss Suda an old woman that always went around the very popular and buzzing business wearing a bumbag and she would be the only one to collect money to that very bumbag, glad to know she's still going god bless her.
Great and honest video! I loved our walking tour the other day. If anyone is reading this please ask Pat about his customized walking tour of Bangkok. I agree with you and I always eat at busy street stalls when I'm in Thailand. There's a reason they're busy. Hua Hin was a great experience along with the train ride as I just finished my trip!
Street foods used to be so common in BKK and were available 24/7. Tourists were flocking for the cheaper and tastier foods on the streets albeit with the hygienic issues. However, most Of the street foods vendors are cautious about food contamination nowadays.
A way better foodcourt is just opposite T21 downstairs of the Interchange21 Tower. Huge portions and cheaper as Pier21. Best kept secret in Bangkok....
Pat, since you reviewed Terminal 21 Asok here ( if only to pan the food) would you consider showing the best way to get from ASOK to the new Terminal 21 Rama 3? (train and water travel preferred to bus). Thanks!
Not in a video I wouldn't, why would I promote a couple of malls that don't need the promotion? I'm sure there will be many videos here on YT in the next few days praising this new mall!
@@BangkokPat Still, it may be nice to know where to eat locally around the new mall if you happen to be in that area : )
Totally agree... taste, smells and atmosphere is what makes street food far superior to the food courts
I agree you advice, I used to have diarrhoea at every meal in Thailand, many years, now I careful, hopefully
Perfect!
Thx!
Cheers Norman
I like the roast duck in mk metro with the spicy sauce in terminal 21
I never understand why people are so elated about Suda. The few times I went there, service was extremely slow and the food bland.
Not in the Asok area, but I was so sad to learn Sukhumvit Soi 38 street food vendors had been moved on. I just stumbled onto it one day. It was always full of people so you knew the turnover was good - hence a bit less risky for your belly. Over time I learnt to trust the value and quality, and got to know some of the lovely people running the stalls. I will miss them.
I hope and pray they have all found another location to ply their trade - and if anyone out there knows where that might be, I'd love to know!
Good one Pat, I reared up a bit when I learned about the Ekkamai street food area being gone. Get some street level awesomeness before it all gets forced into the sanitized confines of ‘the mall’ just hoping our tangerine juice lady is still doing business out of her cart on Suk soi 18 🤞🤞
That street was the epitomy of a great street soi. Shame it went the way of the condo, which is quite ugly by the way. There's one stall left there from the old days, the smoothie seller outside the crappy looking apartment block on the right
I thought for a moment Pat had gone to the dark side and joined the ‘influencers’ 😂
I clicked on this expecting a review of food stalls at Terminal 21. It was the exact opposite instead. How dare you 😄
Great video Pat, I really like the food courts
Have eaten many times at Pier 21 when i was around. Food was always ok. It´s not Street Food like Sae Phun or Rung Rueang or Boat Noodle Alley. People go to Food Courts because the quality is ok, the prizes are fair and the quality is controlled. I prefer to compare Pier 21 to other Food courts like at MBK or Siam Paragon etc,
Good
You will try to research Rama 3 Road, which in the past would be the new CBD of Bangkok in the 40's when the Tom Yum Kung crisis. There are many washing buildings. Shortly before being demolished, now it has begun to develop. There is a new Terminal 21 shopping mall and there is a BRT through this route.
Street food in Thailand is so yummy.
Hey BP. How's about a vid visit to Baan Silapin? Im not sure how many folks know of this place outside of the big city. A nice trip to kill a few hours
I will look it up on the map and see!
Nearly eight years in Bkk and I dont think I ever ate at T21 food court, ate at Suda many times, also used to be Soms at the end of the Soi which I just remembered
Nicely done Pat. It's sad how visitors are being let toward that sanitized, corporate version of what street food is.
Thanks to you, we now know where the real(er) stuff can be found.
Excellent Pat absolutely f***ing excellent mate well done I couldn’t agree with you more
