I'm from Idaho and sometimes you can loose cell coverage due to weather and the mountains. I live in the Treasure Valley and we have mountains on 3 sides and you will loose coverage crossing them. You will even looose Am and FM radio stations. The entire state used to have only 1 area code until a few years ago. I'm still adjusting to having to put an area code in when making a local call. It definitely makes it harder to relie on technology. That's why a lot of people I know will give which route they are traveling to someone before we travel through those areas.

This analysis helps stop comments presuming a truckload that pre-empts due process. I found myself characterising the suspect's eyes as 'hypnotised' from just about every photo and video of the guy, the sense you also get from a hypnotic subject that the front of the brain has been bypassed for direct access to the unconscious that you could see on eye contact. But then every photo and video is showing a suspect stopped by traffic cops or under arrest or escorted past the media to court...where a deer caught in headlights is a typical look. I can;t recall the famous writer who said, whenever he was stopped by cops, he felt guilty even without specificity, and this was so normal for many drivers that some are known to panic and accelerate away from cops for no earthly reason.
So AB's systematic analysis restores logic and rationality to quite a few internet lynch mobs that prefer to rush to judgment so that their brains can head off any ambiguity and stop thinking.
More reflection has wondered how DNA has been reduced to one speck on a knife sheath, which sounds very on the nose if not found anywhere else...no one knows how much supporting evidence has been held back, so ppl presume this extra evidence exists. Some reflection has wondered about a 4 a.m. house call at the time of the murders, but no one seems to know who that was. Some reflection wonders how 4 fatal stabbings by one murderer could happen so fast with relatively minimal sounds and struggle and, seemingly, no blood on the suspect noticed by an eyewitness when surely he'd be covered in blood. Some cited the suspect's psychologically troubled forum postings from years ago, but I don''t know how authentic those are or how relevant.
No one has offered any motivation from the suspect. 'Probable cause' does not seem to mean probable cause, legally. The affidavit doesn't address motivation. 'Cause' seems to refer to cause for prosecution? citing the evidence as probably incriminating the suspect as guilty, not the 'cause' of why he did it.
This trial looks like it will be a very slow process, so we might get a piece-by-piece instruction of how a case is put together by coordinating evidence until what's circumstantial seems beyond coincidence.

A technical extra on triangulation and how it applies here: with a single tower you have an enormous circle of "where the cell can be". With 2 towers you will see a line shape of "where the cell can be". At 3 towers you finally drop this to a small circle plus instrumental error (from experience with making trackers), precision's at about 5-10 meters to any side in the open.
Being inside buildings mostly shows on those calculations as jitter, an oscillation of where it seems to be. Most reconstruction algorithms (and thus software) can account for that, but it gets less precise and if you erroneously apply it that error increases sensibly. Enough to argue a case if the specialist screws up.

    • @synapse0
      @synapse0 Рік тому +19

Of course! A good visual on what you can expect from this kind of triangulation is a venn diagram, with each tower being the center of the circles and the intersection being where the phone might be. If they can also know the strength of the signal, or if there are more towers (especially if they are far away from each other at opposite sides of the phone) it can be quite precise. Not as good as gps but enough to get the address down to a road.

Just want to add that you can have more than three towers and that helps increase precision (reduce location error).
I have seen people assume that you only have three towers but, in reality, phones query (different than connecting) to a lot more towers for connection.
It is just that three is the minimum amount for triangulation.
In places with lots of towers densely packed, a phone can query dozens.

I just really hope they have a lot more evidence tha they are sharing at the moment. Because currently, it seems the case is pretty weak for a conviction.
The knife sheath is interesting: It doesn't fill the trifecta of evidence they teach when studying forensics. Basically, they have his DNA on the sheath, and they have the sheath at the crime scene, but the sheath isn't a fixture in the home, it's mobile, so that doesn't mean he had to be there at the same time as the sheath.
The DNA on the sheath being in only that one specific spot could also mean it was deliberately planted, just as easily as it can be attributed to the suspect cleaning it off and missing that spot for some reason, it could just as easily have been done on purpose by someone setting BK up. Because, as I mentioned above, that sheath is a mobile item, someone could have stolen the knife from him or it might not be his knife, some one might have shown him their knife, etc. I would think any good defense lawyer should be able to successfully sow enough doubt and pick holes in it.
Complete the trifecta you have to physically place him there, either with DNA evidence under victims fingernails, his DNA or prints on fixtures directly in the scene (eg a blood spatter with his fingerprint in, his DNA/blood on something fixed like the headboard of the bed, or a door handle leading out of the room etc), or something from the crime on him (eg blood spatter on his clothes).
While they do also have the shoe print, I have my concerns about that too.
Idk if I believe he's guilty just based off the evidence we've seen. There are currently too many ways to find sufficient doubt. I need there to be that definitive piece of evidence. Hopefully the police have something more in the evidence file. My main concern is him getting a fair trial, tbh. There are people who are calling for him to be sent to the electric chair without even bothering with a trial. Disturbing af. I've seen far too many stories of people who were given the death penalty only to be exonerated afterwards, and that's not including those who are given life sentences in none dp states/countries and then exonerated after decades.

The pings themselves might not be strong evidence just like one piece of a puzzle is not the whole puzzle. When you add the ping data to surveillance and other evidence then the pings take on more significance just like adding more pieces to the puzzle starts to create the whole puzzle. What the OP did here is just cherry pick one piece of evidence amongst many pieces LE has against him. Cherry picking does not work in the court system because you have to look at the totality of the evidence presented and not disregard everything that ties into it.

To this day, when driving between Boise and Hailey, there is a solid hour of the 2 hour drive where there is no service. The mountainous area around Moscow doesn't help this...
Additionally, I was thinking about the map that makes a U shape when BK could have driven a straight line. If the towers being used to triangulate this are so far away, the gov't could have drawn just about any shape they wanted to depict the "map" of his drive. Makes me wonder how much the affidavit makes a mountain out of a mole hill to reach probable cause...

@Alyssa Brown-Carleton she's already under the gun as to why she didn't respond in any number of different ways. I feel sorry for her... if she'd known she was going to be attacked all over the Web, she might've not said anything. It's just that kind of treatment that keep people from coming forward when they know something or see something. They're treated worse than the alleged defendant. She's just trying to help but all the, "Well why didn't she call 9-1-+?" Or, "Why this" & "Why that"...we can't possibly know how utterly terrified she was but we can sure use our imaginations. I'd be frozen stock still.. so if her sighting does hold up to scrutiny, I hope she isn't put thru the proverbial wringer! Bless her heart!! I can recall being her age, living alone, & THINKING I saw something. I didn't call anyone or do anything till the next day & turns out there WAS a murder in the alley behind my apt. I maybe could've helped but maybe not. No one ever approached any of us living in those Apts (as a quadplex ) so, who knows? I didn't volunteer anything.

Depending on the particular cell protocol used, there may also be *range* information inherent to the signal. This occurs when a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) protocol is used, for which the time-of-flight of the signal between the cell tower and the handset needs to be established, so that when the handset transmits it can be timed to fall into a pre-arranged slot when that transmission arrives at the tower. This is distinct from CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) in which signals can overlap in time without interfering with each other too much, but a higher signal-to-noise ratio is required to make it work.
If the time-of-flight data is available to investigators for at least some of the pings, that might help to explain how they are confident that a particular ping to the Moscow tower occurred at a large distance. It would also be possible to correlate trends in range data to the movement of the car with much more confidence than trends in signal strength data alone. If the phone was in active use near the time of the murder (eg. for mapping data in a satnav app), then that would greatly increase the likelihood that time-of-flight data would be available.

There are cameras on various businesses/homes (and if that area is anything like here in Orlando, we have red light cameras that capture images of cars and license plates) that police can gain access to that would help plot the path the Alantra took through town, and into the neighborhood where the crime took place. They can match the time(s) with cell tower ping(s). One of those business's/home's cameras could have captured an image of his license plate as well. If he was driving slowly by one of those cameras, it is possible it could have showed who was in the vehicle, especially if it was a night vision camera. I have three cameras on my property, all with night vision. The night vision on our cameras are very clear and bright.

Making sure that the prosecution makes the best case, the defense has to be as rigorous as possible. The defense actually keeps the prosecution honest. They can’t slide with messy uncertainty. They have to prove it. I used to feel the defense was just there to play unfair and get guilty people off. But I now realize the defense makes sure that the prosecution actually has the proof. I’m really amazed at our system. And very thankful I live here and not Britain (just comparing the courts, not the people as I love Britain).

It is just part of making a picture of the crime. The pings will be compared to video which will show with great precision where he was at various times. The overall picture must be consistent.
The Nancy Brophy trial was similar in that respect. Cell phone pings and video showed her movements. There was no video showing her in the murder scene committing the act, but she was convicted easily, even without the actual murder weapon, by the totality of the circumstantial evidence.

I’m incredibly skeptical of cell towers ping and location and let me tell you why. We live in a mountainous area. My cell phone often pings off towers in Atlanta. That’s a state away from me and a 2 hour and 45 min drive away. Just yesterday I googled Coke on sale near me and ads popped up for Harris Teeter in Atlanta.
As for GPS from our cell phones it’s unreliable. My husband and I are members of an off-road association. When we offroad and use GPS sometimes his GPS will show that he’s miles away from me. How is this possible when he’s sitting right next to me? Also, cell service in mountainous rural areas will show a lot of inconsistent service areas. I can be in the same vehicle with my husband yet he has absolutely no service or connection but I do. We have the same model of phone, same service provider, the same plan, with the same activation date.
We have gone into our local cell service store to get an explanation as to why this is happening and how to fix it. They have no explanation that we can comprehend. The GPS is especially concerning considering we offroad and if you break something and need to give coordinates to someone to help you. GPS recently showed me about 25 miles away from where I actually was. The problem here is the timing was off. I was at that location an hour previously.
So for the cell phone pings in a rural mountainous area I’m not giving it much weight. Location and timing is shotty not only with 1 cell provider but across multiple providers. Example: you can have 2 phones traveling together but on different providers. Their service and GPS will be different. If pings and GPS is reliable then how do you explain this? As for the cell phone companies explaining it….good luck with that.
