Hi Mark, I do small carvings, say 1 to 3 inches square. For that kind of carving, I have a few sixty-year-old carving tools that are 1/8 to 3/8 inches wide, bought in Poland when I was a kid. The steel on them is amazing. I also have made a 60 degree 1/8 inch V-gouge using W1 tool steel. It ended up just as good as anything Swiss stuff you'd buy. My question to you is do you think your method of sharpening with the wheels you use would work also on these small tools? In particular, would there be any special technique for the 1/8 inch wide V-gouge. I had a real tough time sharpening the inside. Once in a while I do larger carvings and I have larger gouges for that so just now I ordered all the wheels and Mother's compound you recommended in your video. Looking forward to try them out. Enjoyed your great videos.
Hi Andrew. I have some very small V tools and the cloth wheels work fine on them. Sounds like you have some great tools. The main thing to remember is the smaller the tool the less it can dissipate the heat so you have to be really careful you don't over heat it and ruin the temper. It should only take a few seconds. Then quench in water to keep it cool. I have found the old steel in vintage tools works well with the system. You can hone the inside easily with the loose buffing wheel as the cloth will conform to the inside. Be sure to subscribe because I have a third and final sharpening video scheduled to go out in the next few days. Possibly even tomorrow. Thanks for watching!
Excellent
Thanks darryl
Great video!
Thanks mike
