  • In process of ‪@Porsche‬ updating the Porsche Cayenne to the E3.2 generation, they left one Cayenne somewhat unchanged - save for the body. Which one? The 2024 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. It retains its original 4.0 Twin Turbo V8, but they optimized the 631 HP derivation to bless us with 19 more HP, bringing the total to 650 HP! After driving it, MotoMan learns more than he bargained for, including some challenges facing the future for cars like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT.

    Thank you, as ever, for your unique take on vehicles and vehicle reviews.
    Please note that, the ZF 8-speed can be calibrated in a wide variety of ways - up to and surpassing the capabilities of a dual-clutch transmission. In terms of speed, feel, and efficiency, there is no disadvantage of the ZF 8HP to a dual-clutch transmission. Its function and performance all comes down to the calibration (of the transmission control unit; TCU). Some 8HP calibrations are much more crisp, responsive, and feelsome than dual-clutch transmissions / calibrations (and vice versa). Think M5 CS or Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio; which offer far more crisp shifts than a Golf R or PDK-equipped 997.2 911 turbo, for example. However, you can't say that about a 330i's 8HP calibration.
    The 8HP has multiple clutches that offer overlapping shifts, without torque interruption, just like a dual-clutch does. It can also be calibrated to provide a 'kick', on upshifts, and under higher loads. It can also directly - and not sequentially - downshift to any gear (within rev range), 6-2, 6-4, 5, 3, 5-2, for example, or any other combination. In some cases, a dual-clutch transmission will incur a downshift delay - if a target gear is on the same gear set as the current gear or if it has pre-selected a higher gear and conditions change and a downshift is requested at that time. The 8HP has no such inherent disadvantage. And, in many applications, the torque converter is only used at a standstill or near-standstill - as when 'creeping' forward or at the very early stages of accelerating from a standstill. Otherwise, the torque converter clutch locks up, from as early as 800 rpm, when accelerating, and stays locked, through gear shifts - essentially forming a direct connection, from the engine to the transmissions output shaft. The latest 8HP generations are also lighter and more efficient than equivalent dual-clutches. As of late, the only time a dual-clutch transmission is advantageous is for mid-engined vehicles (as the 8HP is generally too long for such applications) or in vehicles with engines with an RPM range significantly above ~8,000.
    And, this is all without naming any of the capabilities that the 8HP has that a dual-clutch transmission is incapable of.
    Otherwise, what many complain about or perceive as impediments / flaws (of an 8HP) are generally the doing of the TCU calibration; and not the hardware itself.

      Appreciate the detailed response and explanation. This would also go a long way to explaining the difference between the ZF 8 speed in the Jaguar and in the BMW.

      Excellent description and explanation. I havevthe previous version Turbo, and was immediately impressed with the performance of the transmission. It shifts so quickly and compared to my wife’s pdk in her Macan, I have always preferred my autobox in my CT. Now I know why, even though it’s not as great as the new one, thanks to your breakdown.

    Of course there are a lot of extra options for this vehicle. Just head over to the Porsche optimizer and take a look. Some of the more expensive options are Thermal and noise insulated glass, Burmeister, Night vision assist, Electric roll-up blind, Passenger display as well as others I have not mentioned. I think the sheet you were referring to was the particular build you were testing. Unfortunately right now the vehicle is on a Porsche Stop-sale for a safety issue. Hopefully that will be addressed in the next month or two.

    Needs the PDK transmission. Towing capacity is irrelevant in this vehicle and doesn’t explain it having the Tiptronic transmission. A tow hitch can’t even be optioned

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  Рік тому +2

      It is a function of the larger Cayenne line up. Yes, folks do tow with these when they are not Turbo GTs. The cost of engineering a PDK for one VERY low volume variation of the overall Cayenne line up would most likely not make financial sense. That said, my proposal in this episode was for the larger VW group to steal some budget from Bentley and Lamborghini, invest the engineering a PDK into this platform that would make its way into the Urus, Bentayga and Cayenne GT.

    • @josephmcgivern
      @josephmcgivern Рік тому

    Ti Kanis, my friend! Another great review! I love the GT, but it loses the utility factor IMO with no factory towing hitch available, even just for mounting a bike rack per se. The treadwear rating on those grippy tires probably means you are replacing them annually, too. I will stick with my 22' Turbo non-coupe (with a hitch) for the time being. 😎👍🏼

    It is possible to look past this trendy reliance on the Gray color palette, as dreary as they may seem. However, are we really just going to continually ignore the bronze wheels? After all, it is a Porsche _not_ a Subaru, and it's 2023 - not the early 00's.
    Nevertheless, I stand by my previous statement.

      Hi Bert! Yes, would love to feature a Quadrifoglio yet here's the issue: Stellantis does not take this show seriously. Good, bad or indifferent, timely access to these cars do have a huge impact on our bottom line. Get a car too late, and we lose money on the production. Do that too often, we cease to exist. That is why you see brands that we have good working relationships with. We have made multiple overtures to the folks in Auburn Hills but they have no interest in fixing it. Until that changes, we have to politely decline the request. That said, yes, we did feature two Jeeps recently on the show, but that was entirely a function of our role within the World Car Awards organization.

Red Line or not. This Turbo GT, on the other hand, is nearly perfect. The only reason why I am not buying one is because our URUS S is due to be delivered to us in NOV 2023 and with Lamborghini you get fancier interiors and greater color choices. By the way, instead of the hideous XM, I am just gonna go ahead and buy another XB7. Same money as the Red Line but much classier and an overall a better product than the XM of any kind.

    XM = poser. Cayenne GT = the real deal. However, if I had the money, I'd be an idiot if I bought a Cayenne GT instead of a 911 Turbo. SUVs are a performance comprise, so why would any one pay just as much or more than a sports car for one? It's like serving Sirloin instead of Filet Mignon and saying it's almost the same because the chef cut them and cooked them the same way. Whatever.

    MMTV titles for the 20th EV merecedes dishwasher bluetooth thing with 9 middle names and 2 last ones: This is the best thing in history ever, no more need the ICE power.
    MMTV title for another amazing physics defying Porsche : You get what you vote for.
    I don't get some of these purists and how they'll give EVs a pass but may the universe FORBID SUVs evolve into just another shape of car.

    It's not 2 seconds faster than the Cayenne S. 1.5 seconds to be exact. As we know, half a second is a big difference at these speeds. The Cayenne S is 4.4 0-60 with the sport chono package which is pretty damn fast for any SUV.
