I cannot watch this film without crying,cs lewis is not just spouting words here he very much experienced pain throughout his life as a child losing his mother, experiencing abuse at boarding school and losing his beloved wife to cancer. These are the most difficult questions we face as Christian’s and I have to trust God and say there are some things I will not understand in my earthly lifetime😢
Well said, The human response would be to either get angry at God, or say that he doesn’t exist, and chalk up suffering to random chance . But what I’ve learned through my awakening of faith is that my suffering made me the person I am today. It is truly a gift, because it motivates me to change the things I see in the world that continue to cause suffering. And when you give it up to God, the burden becomes a lot lighter. Suffering is inevitable, but it’s through our faith that it’s for a purpose and our trust in God’s love that we persevere in spite of it.
I like how they really emphasize the ruthless nature of his expression, setting things up for later, when he is grieving. I'm reading the Problem of Pain right now...and there is so much more nuance to his argument
One of my favorite speeches EVER

"Shadowlands" (1993) starring Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis and Debra Winger as Joy Gresham.
I think this is Anthony Hopkins at his best.
