When I was a very new believer, I dabbled with the Jehovah's Witnesses a bit and attended some of their study groups. I never considered myself one, and I assumed they were just another denomination. One time I went to a JW study group and I quoted CS Lewis' "Mere Christianity." An older lady looked at me like I had just snorted a line of cocaine in the middle of church. Another fellow leaned over to me and whispered, "We don't discuss CS Lewis here." "Uh... why not? He's considered one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century." "But he wasn't a Jehovah's Witness." "...and...?" Later that evening they also told that Jesus was merely an angel and the "sprit brother" of Lucifer. After that I was done with them.
Thank you for sharing that. I have known only a few JW’s and they were not admirable people, rather I found them arrogant and clickish and thought that spoke volumes about their version of Christianity.

JWs are not Christians. For the simple reason that they do not accept Jesus as the son of God or his death and Resurrection as redemptive. They even altered the scripture. For example "John 1:1 [1]In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God." John 1:1.This is altered in their book to read "In beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was a God. " A god"!!! So they don't believe in the unity of The Trinitarian god . ! They are not even a church but a corporate business.

As one who has always ran from God, it's amazing how I'm always drawn back. Pull 1 string and it leads back to where one belongs. C S Lewis has always been able to reconcile both this world and God's world. I'm still working on it.
Lewis wasn't always able to reconcile both worlds. He was a staunch atheist for 2 decades. He outright admitted that he was reluctant to believe in God which is different from simply NOT believing in Him.

This man changed my life in 1964. Thought I was an Anglican until 1998. Then I realized he was Orthodox in all but name, and I converted. The problem is, which church, which preacher? Because they are all humans and humans are very imperfect. I was listening to a very well dressed man, very intelligent gave a long sermon about how only a few will get into heaven, very few. Not sure I agree with this but what he said was very well spoken, then he got towards the end and said "In all the 6,000 years of human history" I think you can be a christian and still understand about evolution, we humans have been around in our present form for over 100,000 years, this is just a fact. He would tell you carbon dating is not accurate. Interpreting the bible to think we are only 6,000 years old is to me like a flat earther. just denying reality. Even C.S. didn't deny evolution, it can work just fine with Christianity.

He does a compelling job of reconciling the Biblical timeline with the observable based on time-space relativity and metric tensors. I offered my friend different reason Christians go to a place of worship. He saw it as flawed hypocrites that thought they were better than everyone else. I asked him “what if they knew they are flawed and they should go to publicly worship God…..they go because they need to go not because they feel they are better than non Christians.” I did qualify that of course. there are going to be tares among the wheat….people attending for social reasons. But the true Christians in those churches are going to services to worship the Lord, support the brothers, pool their offerings that after the bills are paid are used joyfully in the community, and kneel together to pray for those who are outside the fold. Probably praying for my friend and his family.
@7:54 AND @8:10 good point about riches in general. Riches meaning popularity, luck, exciting career, contentment, etc. not just money in abundance. My brother and sisters are not Christians, and none of them have suffered as much as I have. Supposedly, Tolstoy became a Christian and he had become rich. He just felt his riches and achievements were ultimately empty.

A profound moment in my life was when I was stubbornly asked, why do you believe what you believe? When I dove into this question wholy, and honestly, I began to realize. That my faith was at the time, in my fellow man, and not God. For I believed what I was taught by my friends, family, and clergy. I, without criticism, blindly believed what I was being taught. And after all, I was seeking the truth. I built my house without even checking the ground of my foundation. I built the foundation their way, with their materials, without testing. I had just trusted them. I didn't check to see if I was being deceived. I didn't check to see if they were deceived, or had made any errors. After all why did they believe what they were teaching me? Because they, for the most part, believed and trusted those before them. After all, if you haven't tested the ground, then you don't no wether or not your house is being built in the right place. If you don't study the foundation you are going to build with. You don't know if it will stand, slip, or fall. Is your beliefs based on someone elses interpretations of Gods message to "you"? I found that truthfully, and honestly, mine was. I see that the majority, if they were honest, would have to admit the same. It will be sad in the end, when God says to them, I do not know you. I have to admit I don't have all the answers, by far. But, I am seeking them out. Where as God, according to the scriptures, rejects all 7 churches in the end. So you can follow your church, but don't be surprised where they lead you. I am seeking the truth, not a leader to blindly follow. After all we are responsible for our own souls, and will not be able to blame others. We're supposed to seek the truth for ourselves. So we won't be deceived.
erm.... keep in mind for most of human history we didnt have the ability to "investigate" the matter. Today i can actually look into the matter. I can see the evidence, research the Bible for errors, and come to the conclusion this MUST be the word of God. You have to remember for 1500 years people ONLY had what people told them when it came to the gospels. That didnt make their faith any less real. The ability to test our own faith is a luxury most of human history didnt have. Perhaps ive misunderstood your comment, but be careful with comments like this. Not an "imitation" of the life of Christ. A TRUE Christian in my way of living is someone who makes the teachings of Christ the foundation and sum of his life.
Misery, loss, suicide, disappointment, sadness, utter isolation, these are the many things that God loves to bring upon me. Most Christians seem to be happy and God gives them everything they want.
That´s an example of what the exercise of reason is meant for. I can only trully know that I know by humbly admiting also that I know that I know not. Reason is one among many faculties embbeded in our intelect, and intellect itself is also to be seen only as a part of our being. Access to being is the sine qua non condition and ground for thinking. We ought always keep that in mind as we think. What we make out of something in our thought is always less than the thing thouhgt, and that goes not only for God and revelation, as stressed by St. T. Aquinas, but to the smalest and humblest particle of dust. Woe unto us that we have followed Descartes, Kant and theirs disciples for so long.
@@atallguynh There is a multitudinary reality grounding of our being and that of the world´s, towards wich all things we presently tell, perceive, see, feel, will, imagine, suffer or act upon is just an infinitesimal and acidental aspect of in comparission. This is also highly acentuated by the fact that both those modes of being - that of the universe and that of ours - are subjected to the corporal conditions of existence called time and space, wich means, to be in a stream, as first put in the record by that old greek pal Heraclitus. If my access and participation in the being would have to relly on the exercise of my consciousness, wheter producing or not contents - as somehow implied by Descartes in his statement "cogito ergo sum" -, I would probably cease to exist as soon as I felt in a deep sleep devoid of dreams, wich of course, has not hold in the ordinary experience of the waking up man. The same would go for forgetfullness: as soon as I´d forget something (wheter produced or simply kept by conscience), it would simple vanish not only from consciousness, but from the world either. The world has a misterious hold on his own, so to say, while thoughts simply fly. The fact is the things remains more or less unchanged, just being virtualized in the sight of consciousnes to let other ones to become actual, or even, at times, to let the mind rest empty for awhile, as aimed by various meditation practices, as for instance, fishing does at times (lol). The acidental subsistence of the contents of consciousness depens equally on the acting and sufering consciousness (the attention) and the behavior of the "outer" reality, but that goes not to the substantial subsitence of our very soul (and that of the universe, also) from wich consciousness eventually and acidentally emerges by internal and external causes, such as, for example, a mood or an explosion may work on us, respectively. If we both depend on a consciousness to be, in full sense, this subsitence is to be found in an unchanging conscience diferent from those changing of our own (or that change element in the universe also), wich theologians usually predicate of God´s eternity, and that modern science predicates as an unexplicable colective byproduct of matter. Hope that the jargon I use is not to much opaque for you, but the subject of being and consciousness has been so much missrepresented and misunderstood for the last six centuries that we hardly can conceive the diferences between the notion of being and the notion of conscience properly these days. Nonetheless, I know all I said is also unilateral, and that you also may find some flaws in the preceeding reasons by paying close attention to reallity. All these points notwithstanding, would you agree that reason is veridical, that is, through reason (based on evidence) we can reach true conclusions whether the question is something of everyday life, in the physical sciences or indeed about spiritual matters ? It may be that there isn't enough evidence to support a chain of reasoning, and that's a different matter, but assuming the right evidence is there, would you agree that reason would lead to the truth, or is it your view that its scope of applicability is limited, say, to physical sciences ? I take the view that reason is valid in all domains, and assuming your assumptions and evidence are correct, barring a logical fallacy, conclusions reached by reason would be veridical.

I don’t think reasoning is the only way to know something, but I do believe it’s a reliable way regardless of the domain to which it is applied..
I try to understand CS Lewis. After many years, I do not understand him, but remain open-minded about him. I can say though, that, if a theologian is excessively difficult to understand, then, maybe, there are too many question marks. Ordinary people must be able to understand any potential explainer about matters, otherwise such men offer less than promised. But among all people, we should still try to find a basis of unity and common values.

Perhaps you should realise he lived in a different day and time. It’s like reading King James Version of the Bible and then doubting the Bible simply because you don’t understand it. Thankfully there are easier versions to read so we do not use that excuse anymore!

His idea about people working jobs which do not encourage intellectual growth is interesting. In my opinion, our world today is filled with secular authority figures (media, govt. etc) who don’t teach us HOW to properly think for ourselves, they just teach us WHAT to think.
I'm not a biblical scholar. But if you can't honestly look at yourself and realize that you fall dismally short of God's grace, you're not being honest with yourself.
Peace in our ministry/vocation is a gift from God that comes through Jesus’s finished work. We receive contentment through His Holy Ghost/Spirit as a free gift. Believing is knowing Jesus is indeed God. God is Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is peace/freedom.

But I am beginning to find out that what people call the cruel doctrines, are really the kindest ones in the long run. I used to think it was a cruel doctrine to say that troubles and sorrows were punishment. But I find it in practice, that when you are in trouble, the moment you regard it as a punishment it becomes easier to bear. If you think of this world simply as a place intended for our happiness, you find it quite intolerable. Think of it as a place of training and correction and it's not so bad. Imagine a set of people all living in the same building half of them think it is a hotel, the other half think it is a prison. Those who think it a hotel might regard it as quite intolerable, and those who thought it a prison might decide that it was really surprisingly comfortable. So what seems the ugly doctrine, is the one that comforts and strengthens you in the end. The people that try to hold an optimistic view of this world will become pessimists; the people who hold a pretty stern view of it become optimistic

And Luther and Elisabeth I or her men and Calvin and Knox in fact did change society in various ways so that it became at least for the poor somewhat gloomier. When he said "sheep are eating men" about enclosures used to given landlords sheep grazing grounds, he didn't say it with approval. It was not Catholics deciding for themselves that Potatoes would be best for _all_ Irish fields to grow, it was Anglicans (or Calvinists) deciding that if Irish tenants wanted a share in the wheat also grown on Irish fields, they'd have to pay for it, who caused The Great Famine.
"Same amount of fun" : literature is produced by a minority. Including the letters accidentally arriving to the status of literature when later discovered and republished. As for the majority, or select extra unfortunate minorities within the lower class majority, there are factors that can hamper both the fun and the possibility to contribute to literature - like Soviet totalitarianism or C. S. Lewis mentioned the "sadness of Sweden" - and I think certain knowledge of geography tends to put forth that Catholicism is historically _not_ as gloomy in this respect as Protestantism is.

@@roonbare2769 That is your opinion. I never said that faith is exempted or unnecessary. In fact, without faith, all works that we do are in vain. I am against lazy people going around accusing others of this and that, and has no love in their hearts. Jesus' faith is never an idle one, but is filled with good works. The disciples toiled up to their last breath to make sure that the Gospel is taught to everyone they are able to reach. The early Christians were martyred because they believed that the true followers of Christ are doers of their faith, active participants in making faith which is an immaterial reality be manifested in to something that can be experienced and seen in the material world that constantly seeks evidence of its existence. Also, all of Christ's commandments are of good works, "feed the hungry, do good to your enemies, pray for those who persecutes you, forgive those who sin against you..." If you do the good works that He taught us that we should do, will it still be as filthy rags in His sight? Lazy fellow, hiding behind faith but is not willing to lift a finger to help! You say that you have faith, but ridicules everyone else who works because of the faith in them that makes them industrious and fruitful in all of good works that God has taught us to do everyday. You may have faith, but you have no love. Because if you do have love, you will work.
There’s a small but meaningful typo (speako?) at 5:43. It does get made clear by what follows it, but when the narrator says that we share in God’s reason in only an, _“…imperfect and uninterrupted way.”,_ it should of course have been, _“…imperfect and_ *interrupted* _way”._
One objection I have: Jesus believes there is a devil, spoke directly to him, was tempted by him in the desert. He called some people children of the devil. I don't see why a Christian would disagree with Christ.
@@pmp450 Grace is not cheap. Anyone who realizes their need for Christ and the depth of His sacrifice in taking the punishment for their sins the sins of the whole world, cannot view grace as cheap. Anyone who claims that we need to earn God's grace, which we cannot do, does not understand the magnitude of His grace. To accept God's grace is to walk in the freedom that He has given us, with the easy yoke and light burden that He provides.
@@pmp450 My thoughts on the subject: I've heard the term "cheap grace" applied by some Christians as a criticism of other Christians. I don't know if this is what you mean by it, but I've heard it used as a description of someone who claims to be a Christian but does not attend church every Sunday, read the bible every day, pray regularly, volunteer to usher or teach Sunday School, give 10% of their income to the church, make Saturday a holy day of rest, etc. Some use it in describing someone who gets saved and then continues to live a sinful lifestyle such as promiscuity, stealing, abusing drugs, beating their spouse, and the like. I don't think this is necessarily a sign of believing a doctrine of "cheap grace." It may be a sign that the person did not surrender to Christ and accept His free gift of salvation. It may be that the person is truly saved but is a new Christian, and the behavior will change as the person grows in a relationship with Christ and digs into scripture and applies it to his or her life. I believe that God gives each of us a new heart when we accept Him as Lord and Savior, and from then on, we cannot be comfortable with our sinful behavior because our new hearts want what is good in God's eyes. We don't stop sinning instantly upon being saved, but as we continue to live in Christ and have Christ living in us, we are conformed more and more to His likeness. Our appetites for sin decrease as they are displaced by our desire for more of God. We will never be perfect, but we are made into new creations by Christ. Once saved, we cannot continue to ignore our sinful behavior, issues of sin must be addressed. I have seen how people make different choices after being rescued from the power of sin by Jesus. They seem to have new eyes to see some of their habitual behavior, that was once normal and acceptable to them, as a problem. It seems like God brings one issue to light and deals with it, then brings another issue to light and deals with it, and so on. He doesn't leave us where we are, but it starts with a new heart, adoption as now one of His children, and continues with the work of the Holy Spirit, His Word, and our growing understanding of Who He is and what He wants from us. Our behavior is a result of the change within us. To start with behavior, and expect to earn God's grace by our obedience, is to begin a losing battle. We cannot behave on our own power. We cannot earn His grace. The whole point of grace is that it is unmerited favor. God's grace shown to us is a part of His sacrificial love. It's free. It's not cheap. We cannot do anything to earn it. It is a free and invaluable gift.
@@JB--- Oh you are SO right! Amen, sister? (brother?). Grace is part of God, a gift we receive because without it we can not begin the journey, as you so readily described, to our salvation. Complete surrender to God's will is rarely, if ever, instantaneous. It takes time. Our sinful nature is not easily overcome just by wanting it. It must be overcome by allowing God's Grace to work it's way into our hearts, our minds and our lives. Step by step, sin by sin God's grace and mercy lets the knots of sin unravel from our brains and minds and hearts until we can see clearly what "His" (and I use quotes here because the thought of a gendered God is a bit too old fashioned, even for me) will is for our lives. I commend you for hitting the proverbial nail on the head. I could not have said it better. Nor do I think Lewis could have either. Bravo!

When I was a very new believer, I dabbled with the Jehovah's Witnesses a bit and attended some of their study groups. I never considered myself one, and I assumed they were just another denomination.
One time I went to a JW study group and I quoted CS Lewis' "Mere Christianity." An older lady looked at me like I had just snorted a line of cocaine in the middle of church. Another fellow leaned over to me and whispered, "We don't discuss CS Lewis here."
"Uh... why not? He's considered one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century."
"But he wasn't a Jehovah's Witness."

Later that evening they also told that Jesus was merely an angel and the "sprit brother" of Lucifer. After that I was done with them.

In the church, I worked hard attempting to "save" people and finally realized it was simple... just Love. Be Humble, Listen, Support, Share and Love as Jesus Christ Loved. The problem is, which church, which preacher? Because they are all humans and humans are very imperfect. I was listening to a very well dressed man, very intelligent gave a long sermon about how only a few will get into heaven, very few. Not sure I agree with this but what he said was very well spoken, then he got towards the end and said "In all the 6,000 years of human history" I think you can be a christian and still understand about evolution, we humans have been around in our present form for over 100,000 years, this is just a fact. He would tell you carbon dating is not accurate. Interpreting the bible to think we are only 6,000 years old is to me like a flat earther. just denying reality. Even C.S. didn't deny evolution, it can work just fine with Christianity.

He does a compelling job of reconciling the Biblical timeline with the observable based on time-space relativity and metric tensors. I offered my friend different reason Christians go to a place of worship. He saw it as flawed hypocrites that thought they were better than everyone else. I asked him “what if they knew they are flawed and they should go to publicly worship God…..they go because they need to go not because they feel they are better than non Christians.”
I did qualify that of course. there are going to be tares among the wheat….people attending for social reasons. But the true Christians in those churches are going to services to worship the Lord, support the brothers, pool their offerings that after the bills are paid are used joyfully in the community, and kneel together to pray for those who are outside the fold. Probably praying for my friend and his family.
@7:54 AND @8:10 good point about riches in general. Riches meaning popularity, luck, exciting career, contentment, etc. not just money in abundance. My brother and sisters are not Christians, and none of them have suffered as much as I have. Supposedly, Tolstoy became a Christian and he had become rich. A profound moment in my life was when I was stubbornly asked, why do you believe what you believe? When I dove into this question wholy, and honestly, I began to realize. That my faith was at the time, in my fellow man, and not God. For I believed what I was taught by my friends, family, and clergy. I, without criticism, blindly believed what I was being taught. And after all, I was seeking the truth. I built my house without even checking the ground of my foundation. I built the foundation their way, with their materials, without testing. I had just trusted them. I didn't check to see if I was being deceived. I didn't check to see if they were deceived, or had made any errors. After all why did they believe what they were teaching me? Because they, for the most part, believed and trusted those before them. After all, if you haven't tested the ground, then you don't no wether or not your house is being built in the right place. If you don't study the foundation you are going to build with. You don't know if it will stand, slip, or fall. Is your beliefs based on someone elses interpretations of Gods message to "you"? I found that truthfully, and honestly, mine was. I see that the majority, if they were honest, would have to admit the same. It will be sad in the end, when God says to them, I do not know you. I have to admit I don't have all the answers, by far. But, I am seeking them out. Where as God, according to the scriptures, rejects all 7 churches in the end. So you can follow your church, but don't be surprised where they lead you. I am seeking the truth, not a leader to blindly follow. After all we are responsible for our own souls, and will not be able to blame others. We're supposed to seek the truth for ourselves. So we won't be deceived.
erm.... keep in mind for most of human history we didnt have the ability to "investigate" the matter. Today i can actually look into the matter. I can see the evidence, research the Bible for errors, and come to the conclusion this MUST be the word of God. You have to remember for 1500 years people ONLY had what people told them when it came to the gospels. That didnt make their faith any less real. The ability to test our own faith is a luxury most of human history didnt have. Perhaps ive misunderstood your comment, but be careful with comments like this. What you are implying is very dangerous.

Reason is one among many faculties embbeded in our intelect, and intellect itself is also to be seen only as a part of our being. Access to being is the sine qua non condition and ground for thinking. We ought always keep that in mind as we think. What we make out of something in our thought is always less than the thing thouhgt, and that goes not only for God and revelation, as stressed by St. T. Aquinas, but to the smalest and humblest particle of dust. Woe unto us that we have followed Descartes, Kant and theirs disciples for so long.

@@atallguynh There is a multitudinary reality grounding of our being and that of the world´s, towards wich all things we presently tell, perceive, see, feel, will, imagine, suffer or act upon is just an infinitesimal and acidental aspect of in comparission. This is also highly acentuated by the fact that both those modes of being - that of the universe and that of ours - are subjected to the corporal conditions of existence called time and space, wich means, to be in a stream, as first put in the record by that old greek pal Heraclitus. If my access and participation in the being would have to relly on the exercise of my consciousness, wheter producing or not contents - as somehow implied by Descartes in his statement "cogito ergo sum" -, I would probably cease to exist as soon as I felt in a deep sleep devoid of dreams, wich of course, has not hold in the ordinary experience of the waking up man. The same would go for forgetfullness: as soon as I´d forget something (wheter produced or simply kept by conscience), it would simple vanish not only from consciousness, but from the world either. The world has a misterious hold on his own, so to say, while thoughts simply fly. The fact is the things remains more or less unchanged, just being virtualized in the sight of consciousnes to let other ones to become actual, or even, at times, to let the mind rest empty for awhile, as aimed by various meditation practices, as for instance, fishing does at times (lol). The acidental subsistence of the contents of consciousness depens equally on the acting and sufering consciousness (the attention) and the behavior of the "outer" reality, but that goes not to the substantial subsitence of our very soul (and that of the universe, also) from wich consciousness eventually and acidentally emerges by internal and external causes, such as, for example, a mood or an explosion may work on us, respectively. If we both depend on a consciousness to be, in full sense, this subsitence is to be found in an unchanging conscience diferent from those changing of our own (or that change element in the universe also), wich theologians usually predicate of God´s eternity, and that modern science predicates as an unexplicable colective byproduct of matter. Hope that the jargon I use is not to much opaque for you, but the subject of being and consciousness has been so much missrepresented and misunderstood for the last six centuries that we hardly can conceive the diferences between the notion of being and the notion of conscience properly these days. Nonetheless, I know all I said is also unilateral, and that you also may find some flaws in the preceeding reasons by paying close attention to reallity. And with this I end my invitation to the exercise of philosophy. God Bless.
All these points notwithstanding, would you agree that reason is veridical, that is, through reason (based on evidence) we can reach true conclusions whether the question is something of everyday life, in the physical sciences or indeed about spiritual matters ? It may be that there isn't enough evidence to support a chain of reasoning, and that's a different matter, but assuming the right evidence is there, would you agree that reason would lead to the truth, or is it your view that its scope of applicability is limited, say, to physical sciences ? I take the view that reason is valid in all domains, and assuming your assumptions and evidence are correct, barring a logical fallacy, conclusions reached by reason would be veridical.

I try to understand CS Lewis. After many years, I do not understand him, but remain open-minded about him. I can say though, that, if a theologian is excessively difficult to understand, then, maybe, there are too many question marks. Ordinary people must be able to understand any potential explainer about matters, otherwise such men offer less than promised. But among all people, we should still try to find a basis of unity and common values.

His idea about people working jobs which do not encourage intellectual growth is interesting. In my opinion, our world today is filled with secular authority figures (media, govt. etc) who don’t teach us HOW to properly think for ourselves, they just teach us WHAT to think.

Peace in our ministry/vocation is a gift from God that comes through Jesus’s finished work. We receive contentment through His Holy Ghost/Spirit as a free gift. Believing is knowing Jesus is indeed God. God is Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is peace/freedom.

I used to think it was a cruel doctrine to say that troubles and sorrows were punishment. But I find it in practice, that when you are in trouble, the moment you regard it as a punishment it becomes easier to bear. If you think of this world simply as a place intended for our happiness, you find it quite intolerable. Think of it as a place of training and correction and it's not so bad. Imagine a set of people all living in the same building half of them think it is a hotel, the other half think it is a prison. Those who think it a hotel might regard it as quite intolerable, and those who thought it a prison might decide that it was really surprisingly comfortable. So what seems the ugly doctrine, is the one that comforts and strengthens you in the end. The people that try to hold an optimistic view of this world will become pessimists; the people who hold a pretty stern view of it become optimistic

It was not Catholics deciding for themselves that Potatoes would be best for _all_ Irish fields to grow, it was Anglicans (or Calvinists) deciding that if Irish tenants wanted a share in the wheat also grown on Irish fields, they'd have to pay for it, who caused The Great Famine.
"Same amount of fun" : literature is produced by a minority. Including the letters accidentally arriving to the status of literature when later discovered and republished.
As for the majority, or select extra unfortunate minorities within the lower class majority, there are factors that can hamper both the fun and the possibility to contribute to literature - like Soviet totalitarianism or C. S. Lewis mentioned the "sadness of Sweden" - and I think certain knowledge of geography tends to put forth that Catholicism is historically _not_ as gloomy in this respect as Protestantism is.

@@roonbare2769 That is your opinion. I never said that faith is exempted or unnecessary. In fact, without faith, all works that we do are in vain. I am against lazy people going around accusing others of this and that, and has no love in their hearts. Jesus' faith is never an idle one, but is filled with good works. The disciples toiled up to their last breath to make sure that the Gospel is taught to everyone they are able to reach. The early Christians were martyred because they believed that the true followers of Christ are doers of their faith, active participants in making faith which is an immaterial reality be manifested in to something that can be experienced and seen in the material world that constantly seeks evidence of its existence. Also, all of Christ's commandments are of good works, "feed the hungry, do good to your enemies, pray for those who persecutes you, forgive those who sin against you..." If you do the good works that He taught us that we should do, will it still be as filthy rags in His sight? Lazy fellow, hiding behind faith but is not willing to lift a finger to help! You say that you have faith, but ridicules everyone else who works because of the faith in them that makes them industrious and fruitful in all of good works that God has taught us to do everyday. You may have faith, but you have no love. Because if you do have love, you will work.

One objection I have: Jesus believes there is a devil, spoke directly to him, was tempted by him in the desert. He called some people children of the devil. I don't see why a Christian would disagree with Christ.

@@pmp450 Grace is not cheap. Anyone who realizes their need for Christ and the depth of His sacrifice in taking the punishment for their sins the sins of the whole world, cannot view grace as cheap. Anyone who claims that we need to earn God's grace, which we cannot do, does not understand the magnitude of His grace. To accept God's grace is to walk in the freedom that He has given us, with the easy yoke and light burden that He provides.
@@pmp450 My thoughts on the subject: I've heard the term "cheap grace" applied by some Christians as a criticism of other Christians. I don't know if this is what you mean by it, but I've heard it used as a description of someone who claims to be a Christian but does not attend church every Sunday, read the bible every day, pray regularly, volunteer to usher or teach Sunday School, give 10% of their income to the church, make Saturday a holy day of rest, etc. Some use it in describing someone who gets saved and then continues to live a sinful lifestyle such as promiscuity, stealing, abusing drugs, beating their spouse, and the like. I don't think this is necessarily a sign of believing a doctrine of "cheap grace." It may be a sign that the person did not surrender to Christ and accept His free gift of salvation. It may be that the person is truly saved but is a new Christian, and the behavior will change as the person grows in a relationship with Christ and digs into scripture and applies it to his or her life. I believe that God gives each of us a new heart when we accept Him as Lord and Savior, and from then on, we cannot be comfortable with our sinful behavior because our new hearts want what is good in God's eyes. We don't stop sinning instantly upon being saved, but as we continue to live in Christ and have Christ living in us, we are conformed more and more to His likeness. Our appetites for sin decrease as they are displaced by our desire for more of God. We will never be perfect, but we are made into new creations by Christ. Once saved, we cannot continue to ignore our sinful behavior, issues of sin must be addressed. I have seen how people make different choices after being rescued from the power of sin by Jesus. They seem to have new eyes to see some of their habitual behavior, that was once normal and acceptable to them, as a problem. It seems like God brings one issue to light and deals with it, then brings another issue to light and deals with it, and so on. He doesn't leave us where we are, but it starts with a new heart, adoption as now one of His children, and continues with the work of the Holy Spirit, His Word, and our growing understanding of Who He is and what He wants from us. Our behavior is a result of the change within us. To start with behavior, and expect to earn God's grace by our obedience, is to begin a losing battle. We cannot behave on our own power. We cannot earn His grace. The whole point of grace is that it is unmerited favor. God's grace shown to us is a part of His sacrificial love. It's free. It's not cheap. We cannot do anything to earn it. It is a free and invaluable gift.
@@JB--- Oh you are SO right! Amen, sister? (brother?). Grace is part of God, a gift we receive because without it we can not begin the journey, as you so readily described, to our salvation. Complete surrender to God's will is rarely, if ever, instantaneous. It takes time. Our sinful nature is not easily overcome just by wanting it. It must be overcome by allowing God's Grace to work it's way into our hearts, our minds and our lives. Step by step, sin by sin God's grace and mercy lets the knots of sin unravel from our brains and minds and hearts until we can see clearly what "His" (and I use quotes here because the thought of a gendered God is a bit too old fashioned, even for me) will is for our lives. I commend you for hitting the proverbial nail on the head. I could not have said it better. Nor do I think Lewis could have either. Bravo!
