V8 Range Rover. Cold Start, Drive, Backfire!

- My 1984 Range Rover 3.5 Carb. Backfires badly when cold. Doesnt sound too bad in this video, but when you are in the car, sounds like a shotgun being fired! Also has a holed exhaust, but i have a new stainless steel one waiting to go on.

All this chat about running rich - it was cold started on choke - once warm with the “choke” it seems to run fine - although being twin SUs (or poss strombergs ) they don’t actually have a choke - they merely enrich the mixture for warm up hence the running like this is from cold
Sounds like a 22 round hitting alloy lol nice sounding through, ive got the 3.9 in my disco which crackles when throttle is lifted. I do love the sound of a rover v8.

Well, I would say that considering it's 26 years old now, that the carburettor has come a bit loose in it's old age and its running a tad rich. Adjust the carburettor float chamber.
You are right that i live in V8's country, but all the V8 here never sound like R.R Carburetor. my dad use to own a Land Rover Defender 110 and he replace the original engine with 3.5 Carb. and i won't forget that monster sound , some how he sold it and i remember how i was crying that time for that car, so thats my story with this engine and i will still hunt for it till i find it. hahahahaha

hay ive got a 3.9 v8 and i went to the land rover club track and on the way home she was poping and banging so the weekend after we went for a good spin n stopen in a car park n gave it a good rev she was poping flames about 2 foot long ill up load the vid so u lot can see and it dose sound like a shout gun lol
@salskyline First, sorry for my english... Ok, you can't find R.R 3.5 in the U.S, BUT you are a lucky guy because you live in the V8's country ! I l'd love to live in the U.S, to hear the V8's sound, every day ! ;)
I know the video is 15 years :D but do you know what was the issue with backfire when warm ?
If i recall, it had a weak spark, someone had converted to an after market electronic ignition, but had had got the wiring abit wrong! Managed to sort. Wished id kept it. They are fetching decent money now :(
looks like the engine has had it from the blue smoke and she's running a bit rich -carb needs attention - hence backfire
I would like to see that. does the 3.9 sound like 3.5 carburetor or it must be louder. I'll be waiting for the video anyway....
I Definitely love that sound of 3.5 carburetor . unfortunately we don't have those R.R 3.5 in the U.S for some reason and can't find one. they all 3.9 with Automatic trans. sucks !!!!!!!!!.

I dunno, sounds alright for a 25 year old vehicle with a hole in the exhaust. Shame about the backfire tho!
