  • John David Glaude runs the UA-cam channel “Obese to Beast” to help people move from sickness to fitness. Glaude, who once weighed 360 lb., reclaimed his health with nutrition and CrossFit.
“I got to a point at my heaviest where I was OK with dying before I was 40,” Glaude says.
When Glaude realized his weight was preventing him from doing things he wanted to do, he implemented what he calls the “common sense diet”: He cut out soda, junk food and fast food.
“When you’re as heavy as I was, if you just make a small change, you’ll see a big result,” Glaude says. “I made that small change, saw a big result, was more motivated to make another change to see more results, and … it was like a domino effect.”
After dabbling in fitness competitions, Glaude found CrossFit Dark Side in El Cajon, California, and “fell in love,” he says.
“CrossFit has that community aspect of, like, you are doing the same workout as all these other people. You’re suffering together, and it makes the gym less of an isolated thing,” Glaude says.
When Glaude posted a video showing the loose skin he had left after his massive weight loss, it went viral. Today, “Obese to Beast” has 529,000 followers and counting.

While exercise is important, the most important thing will be your diet. I would recommend going to a dietitian if you can. But if not, just take the time to educate yourself on a diet that you will be able to maintain, not something for fast results. Good luck and don't give up.

Joshua De leon hey josh. In terms of the diet you are going to feel a bit deflated for a couple days then you will get in your groove and be feeling amazing. Exercise is always a good thing but you can never out work a bad diet take it from me. I myself slipped a bit and am just getting back on keto. It’s an uphill battle but there is no better time than now. If you have any questions I am more than happy to help feel free to reach out. As long as you really limit your carb intake and eat when you are hungry you are guaranteed to lose lots of weight.

I turned 19 3 days ago and today I clocked in at 269. I come from a kinda similar home life, my dad was all i had and he worked around the clock so it didnt matter what was ate as long as the kids were fed. Seeing you be able to embrace the lose skin especially around your inner thighs genuinely made me smile cus i got a lot of lose skin there too and now i feel less weird about it so genuinely, thank you.

It's great when you can somewhat relate to him, then you can truly appreciate his decision and his change. I've also cut out sweetened beverages, junk food, high calorie foods and just drank water, ate small portions and walked instead of riding a bus at the time. Literally as he says, the common sense diet. Lost 20kgs (44lbs) in 4 months and still aim to cut more. It's really the truth that along the way, you make smaller changes and adjustements to your dieting and exercise which helps you see results and they are motivating the most. Great vid.

I keep on finding ways in which my body can do something new at home and during WOD. What a great Video! I can totally relate to John and his relationship with food. We both were at almost the same weight I was at 351.4 on the scale and it probably wasn't my heaviest, I've been working for the last 2 years and have lost over 100 pounds my biggest change is how I see myself. I used to hide behind my weight and it was a comfort for me, now that I'm in better shape than I was in High School I'm struggling with being a prisoner to the scale. This is a process I know that. I'm thankful for @ObesetoBeast for his story and knowing that we're all in this together! Keep grinding!

Your childhood story is almost identical to mine. I was taken away from my mother when I was a kid, very young. Don't remember the age. She got custody of us again after 6-8 months. Then it was nearly the same again, we lived in a garbage apartment (still blessed to have a roof over my head!), but when we ate dinner it was usually just sit down, load up your plate and eat. I was addicted to soda, hardcore addicted, I would have 5-6 cans of soda a day + 2-4 bowls of cereal per day and I mean moderate sized bowls, like 7 1/2 inch deep bowls. It was pretty bad.
Anytime we ate it was either me over eating due to stress eating because I got bullied a lot, I honestly couldn't tell you why... I guess I was annoying or something?? I don't know. To this day I still don't know why I was bullied to harshly and people still, again, to this day, avoid speaking to me, and again... I just. Dont. Know. Why. It's weird. But we ate fast food... A LOT, but it was weird because I didn't eat as much as the rest of my family, where my brother and dad would eat 3 cheeseburgers, 1 large fries, 1 large drink + refill and then have a bowl of ice cream at home (typical day in our house, we always had ice cream... always. We sometimes wouldn't have food but guess what we did have? Did you guess it? I think you did... Ice cream.) I would on the other hand eat something like, 1 cheese burger, 1 large drink + refill, 1/2 a medium fries then eat ice cream at home with everyone.
I exercised a good amount, I loved hiking and walking, I would walk 1 mile or more each day, most of which was up very steep hills. I honestly don't know why it's so hard for me to lose weight, according to my doctor it's genetic (everyone on my moms side is obese), but idk. At one point I was able to lose a lot of weight, I dropped from 325lbs to 265lbs, but all I did was starve myself a lot and walk everyday 2 miles a day. I got into a relationship and it was awful for me I was stressed and depressed because she was abusive and cold-hearted, but I digress... I gained it back....
Now I'm 300lbs but I've been hitting the gym often (I punch it as often as I can! -joke-) this is the weird part that I don't fully understand... Okay so... I was 325lbs, I lost weight to 265lbs that was 2 years ago. When I was 265lbs I was wearing size 42 jeans and 2xl shirts.
Currently I'm 300lbs (roughly 299 but rounded up), I'm able to wear size 42 jeans and can't fit into 2xl shirts...?
That's what's confusing me. I lost a lot of weight, I look slimmer than when I was like 320lbs, and I'm no where near my old lowest weight... did I gain a lot of muscle? I can jog for 3-5 minutes at a time. My jog/walk routine is 1 minute jog, 2 minute walk, repeat and i can do that roughly 5 or 6 times before my legs hurt from being sore. So, my question here I guess would be, did I lose body fat % and gain muscle and that's why I don't feel as fat? Or am I just in a placebo effect? Also no I'm not trying to say "Ok I'm able to walk and jog, I'm good. No more weight loss!" nor am I pigging out daily, I'm sticking to a diet of 1800-2000 calories a day. I should be losing weight but I'm not. I'm just sitting at 299-303 each day. Help me lose weight lmao.

Most people have no idea as to the resolve you must maintain if you want to do what this young man did. I was on my way to becoming Obese at 5/8" at 240 lbs. I went on the Keto diet and have lost 25 lbs with no exercise in two and half months. My goal is 180 lbs which is about right for my age of 72. I had no idea how easy the Keto diet is and because I was always a meat eater, this was right down my alley. For all you out there suffering with weight issues, try the Keto diet, because when you see the results you will be very please.
BUT, like that young man implied, you must view this as a life style change, not just a diet.

Congratulations brother on your transformation from unhealthy to healthy. It is truly inspirational. I myself seem to yo-yo up and down constantly for the last 10 years. I get fat, then I work really hard and get into great shape, then I get fat again. It sucks. Hopefully you can manage to change your lifestyle long term. I struggle with making positive changes permanent.

Dang bro. I peaked at 373 at 18. Dropped to 348 after taking weight loss medication. Maintained about 350 for a while, nownback to high 340s. This has really shown me that my hold of 185-200 is perfect, and that it im not the only one with the thoughts of "ill never be able to do something, like a muscle-up, cuz im obese." I really need to lock in.

John, thank you so much for sharing your story. I am very proud of what you have accomplished, and continue to accomplish. I am obese myself (well over 200 pounds), and in need of losing weight. Your videos give me inspiration to lose weight. Exercise (moving around more in general) wouldn't be an issue for me, it's my diet that is. Your "what I eat in a day" videos give me ideas, though, but I can't really cook. I know John can't see this, but I just wanted to say this.

sister and brother started doing crossfit a little over a year ago and he told me that it was all false info that crossfit is bad for your joints in the long run. Lo and behold he is now recovering from a pretty bad shoulder injury and a lower back injury. He tried to claim that it was from work but the funny thing is his job is not physical enough to hurt your shoulder or back in such a way. I tried to tell him to move away from such a damaging workout style.

Way off topic, but you have pretty eyes.
Also, way to go, dude! That's awesome. I'm 50 lbs down from last year and I think one of my biggest fears is extra skin since I'm wanting to lose another 40-50. I don't know how I could embrace the extra skin knowing I put it there, but I'm really trying to love my body the best I can since it's seen me through all these crappy points in my life.

as a 500 pound man in california. its fun walking about being my weight and still able to walk and do a normal lide. the thing is. i didnt gain alll or tbh any of my weight in the first half it was 98% far far to much grain and soda crackers and just being massively lazy after high school.. then 5 ish years ago. got a bad soda addivtion to caffine annnndd for around 350 up to 500 were at 30 years old and living in a half redneck half collage town in northern california... its hard to be able to be health let alone now be literally attacked in public for being a easy mark.. then add mental problems and deep scars in my life and here i am about to turn 30 miserible and just waiting for the end to come. no friends and a family that uses and abuses and neglects me to this day since i cant stop or fight back.
