It was not Christians who thought icons were idolatrous, but Muslims. Their leaders influenced the emperor and demanded that they be removed from churches or that the ones that could not be removed would be damaged. Hence the eyes being gouged out of many murals and icons in churches especially in the middle east.

Thank you, but I have such a question, can I cover it on a tree and paint it with an egg tempera directly on the tree? Or should I put a blank (canvas) and glue it on the tree? Then paint on a blank (canvas) which is stuck to a tree? I am waiting for an answer, thanks
I’m not the Iconographer here but if I may, I would say it’s not a good idea to paint directly on a tree because the tree is growing and therefore moving. I doubt the painting would last. Also, exposure to the elements is not conducive to a lasting painting, unless other measures are taken to protect the painted surface. I hope this helps. ☦️
