Poor Caesar… this scene caught me so off guard when I first saw it. His wife I could see getting killed, but not Blue Eyes. His eldest son had learned so much from the last movie and was on his way to becoming the new leader of the apes and to carry on Caesar’s legacy. At least Cornelius survived, but he will barely even remember Caesar or who he was since he is so young so this scene is especially tragic.

Mine stopped but on the inside, I hated Woody Harrelson for being in this movie. Not actually hate the actor, no I love him in Zombieland but in this; his character was a total monster! How evil he was, does not have the soul for the apes and only cares about what he wants.
It’s a grey area. While the Colonel deserves some degrees of sympathy and empathy for the loss of his son to the virus that Cesar unintentionally spread, the fact he uses his sons death as a clarity to kill Cesar’s own is evil in its purest form. Both have legitimate reasons to hate one another and both use very evil tactics to make each other suffer. But the Colonel is willing to take more villainous and more tyrannical like risks to achieve his goal of ape genocide.
The Colonel didn't hate the apes. He respected them. In fact, his understanding of just how extremely smart they were is why he pragmatically realized he had to wipe them out before they replaced humans as the dominant species on earth. The Colonel acted out of a cold, calculated and hyper-practical philosophy, which took empathy and emotion out of the equation. It wasn't rage, hatred, or malice. It was ruthless pragmatism.
after all of blue eyes' character development in the last movie, where he struggles with who to trust and his innocence clouded by hate and his exposure to the true darkness within his fellow apes... ...he just gets unceremoniously gunned down in the first third of this movie.
I personally feel it reflects the cruelty of life very well, not to mention, for the soldiers, Blue Eyes was probably the secondary target after Caesar, he was primed to be in a leadership position and that meant assasinating him as well would effectively leave the herd in shambles
its been 7 years since this film has released and i still CANNOT get over how much of a great scene this is, how raw, how brutal and how heartbreaking it is, WITH THE BEAUTIFULLY MADE MUSIC BY MICHAEL GIACCHINO, it makes the scene that much more tense, everytime i watch i STILL get goosebumps and my palms get super sweaty to this day and ive seen this movie more than i can remember, and when caesar and the colonel first meet, staring each other down, the colonel eyes down to his family, and poor caesar does as well to his family dead AND HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AT 1:57 ARE SO DAMN PERFECT, caesar went through the 5 stages of grief in those brief seconds just from his facial expressions ALONE. shoutout to andy serkis for playing the hell out of his character, this will forever be my favorite film series of all time, and idc what anybody else the most UNDERRATED trilogy of all time, it truly doesnt get the recognition it deserves.

This might be the bias of knowledge talking, and I know Andy Serkis' performances are obviously CGI-ed over, but it's interesting to see the crazed realization look that Caesar has at 2:02 is similar to Gollum's in the first Hobbit movie when he realizes Bilbo stole his ring. Neat to see the actor permeate through and truly inform the special effects.
There's a similar scene at the end of Batman Begins as Bale's Bruce Wayne reveals to the former Wayne Industries CEO that he has bought the majority of the company's shares and effective immediately installed Lucius as the CEO, you see a little bit of Bale's performance as Patrick Bateman trickle over in there, always fun to notice these idiosyncracies
Caeser spared the Colonel's men, offered them peace but instead the Colonel along with his men went out to the woods and killed his family which really angers me due to the fact that Caeser did not start the war. Not to mention Woody Harrelson played one of the baddest villains throughout his career. Dude went from shooting hoops with Wesley Snipes to going toe to toe with apes.
The music was most eerie for me in this scene. Caesar sees the night vision lights reflecting through the waterfall and knows something bad is happening. An assassin team sent to kill him. The suspenseful creepy music reminds me of the final scene in Full Metal Jacket. Whoever chose that score 🔥💯

The deafening silence in the theater when I went to go see this still haunts me every time I watch this scene. When I say you could literally hear people’s breath shake and tremor in their seats, it was that big of a shock! This scene was so unexpected and definitely set the tone for the rest of the movie.
