Interesting point. I suspect in an attempt to keep a scene simple that people shy away from adding too much variety, but as we know nature is pretty diverse
Thanks Rebecca. I loved putting this together. It really reminds me of being up in the lakes exploring with my camera 🙂 You're right about it looking good in the future too. After a couple of weeks weathering in, I think I'll go back and refine the details. Should keep me busy
Thank you. I'm really pleased with how this turned out. Just needs a bit of refinement now over the coming weeks I think to improve the detail in things like the road etc.
For me this is one of your best. The pipe needs to be light blue like a water pipe (we used to call it alkethene on the sites but I don't think that's correct). That's the killer detail. 🙂. Penjing is something I've been interested in but could never get away with the figurines. 100% sold with the land-rover though. I'm a kid of the 70's Matchbox & others made true to life miniatures of vehicles. It totally validates the scale of your composition & attention to the landscape. 😊 Bloody Inspired. Thanks for sharing Tony.
I agree Nick. Although I do like the idea of using yellow, I know deep down that those pipes are blue, so I'm going with you and forgetting colour contrast in favour of realism. blue it will be 🙂
Cheers Dave. This was definitely a bit different, but I really enjoyed creating the whole landscape. Me and my dad were watching you down at the cabin last night, and I think that's a place you could definitely use as inspiration for a penjing, especially with those wonderful trees you're begining to style that lean over the water. That would look brilliant in miniature. I suspect it will take time to get the right trees in the right style, but in there would lie the challenge I think more so than the actual cabin etc
Nice one Tony visited the lakes and dales a few times and can see it in your composition for sure. Look forward to the next instalment from the master ‘
I just love it Tony. I agree with Dad on the plastic pipe though. Remove it when it’s done its job. Landscapes are great fun. I love the look on your face at the end. You should be very pleased with this. Those sheep!
Thanks Steve. Absolutely no doubt that you were a significant influence on this design mate especially when it comes to the scale and use of perspective, so it's genuinely great to hear that you like it mate. 🙂
Me too Tom. I always think that they have the potential to deliver massive impact, and I love how they can weather and develop just like the real landscape that they are based on.. perhaps that last part is wishful thinking, but that's the plan
Hi Tony, another great inspirational video, good to see you’re getting more use out of your left hand now. I have a very large rectangular plastic pot, about 40cm long and I have been wondering what to do with it as I will never have a large enough specimen to put in it. A landscape would be an ideal project for it and would use up some of my many small bonsai’s
Thanks Mandy. I really enjoyed creating this, and it ended up being the rock placement that was the most satisfying as even small changes appeared to make a big difference
I can imagining sitting in front of this Nothophagus tree, enjoying shade and watching the scenery. Beautiful. And yes, if it was mine, I’ld probably paint that plastic tube yellow… 😘 Enjoy your day. Cheers, 🙋♀️ Martina
Thanks for the yellow pipe vote Martina. It's got to happen now! I've sat in the shade of trees like that enjoying my packed lunch many times just soaking up the wonderful views
@@TonysBonsai There have been mindful places, during life and it’s joyful to rebuild these scenes and be reminded again. I did that 2 years ago and created a mixed forest for my mum, as she always missed the forests and mountains where she originally came from. Developing this creation for her, watching it’s growth reminded me to the place as well and now my mum and I enjoy this beautiful tiny landscape together. Great to see you doing with your dad. I‘ld love to see your upgrade with the yellow pipe … 😘
Man ive been trying to grow southern beech all spring and summer to no Success.. you simply cannot find southern beech in the states for some odd reason.. no one has any examples for sale and my poor little heart is crying in pain hehehehe.. the seeds i bought must old or something because not a one has sprouted. I even Drizzle a bunch in my bonsai pots and nope.. have a bunch under a heating mat and grow light and still nope.. im about ready to just sprinkle them in the flower bed as a last resort and maybe one seed will be variable... they seem like a really cool species to work with, once again you guys across the pond got all the cool stuff😊
It's funny how different trees respond in different locations. Over here if I just stick any kind of branch in soil it roots. Keep at it though and I'm sure you'll be successful in the end!
Thank you. I agree these landscapes need time to settle in more so than individual trees, and I'm looking forward to refining things like the road in a couple of months time
Yea there is definitely lots of room for this to be developed. I think the road, the moss etc all needs work to take them to the next level of detail and reality
Thanks Mick. That's a big compliment. I just love Nigel's landscapes and hopefully he'll check this out at some point. I think he'll appreciate my desire to produce something based on reality opposed to being an idealistic version of what the lake District should look like
I'll have to trust you that your awesome penjing looks like the lake district having been sent over here so young.. however i can see you had alot of fun putting this landscape together, the sheep look great ( i would have had one mounting another somewhere in the background) but I'm a weirdo. Top job Tony
Thanks Nick. I just loved putting this together. So much fun trying to recreate the feeling of being up there, and it's great how much the whole composition can be influenced by relatively small adjustments
Nailed it again Tony. Loving the creativity and mixture of trees and textures, I’m going to have to have a go at one of those now. Love it when your dad enters the room, sees you filming then backs away and tries to hide out of shot. Class 😀

@@TonysBonsai I’ve got a mix of seedlings I collected last year - beech and junipers and a couple of slightly older oaks. Might see how they might fit together with some Yorkshire stone ‘rocks’. I love the forest look.
Surely this is bonsai in its essence. Whether a single tree or a landscape scene. We feel like we could climb in the branches or walk across the field. Such a great composition Tony. You clearly have a great love of the world around you.
Thanks Andrew. Yes I think that we need to keep stepping back and asking ourselves whether in fact we are actually creating miniature representations of real life, and when we are, our work is probably the most satisfying
That is lovely; it reminds me of Shawn the Sheep - a favourite of the kids when they were little - now I have an ear worm to contend with!! (and I will agree with Dad and Steve on the plastic . . . !)

From a master to another master 😂😅 in a aquascaping we have "rules" and if you following the "strata" in the big rock. The ridges in the rock, the lines. You can see the notafagus is following the lines perfectly. But I have never been in the Lake District of Britain. So I don't like when the rocks and the gravel doesn't match. I don't know If it's like that. But the contrast of the rock and gravel makes it artificial in my aquascaping mind. But if it like that. It's fine😅I would prefer a nice moss carpet. But again great work bonsai master ! Love all your idea's! And I really like the hawthorn between the rocks in the background. Gives it depth!
Interesting stuff Chris. The limestone erratic rocks were deposited by glacial movement at the end of the ice age, and the grey chippings are the byproduct of the slate mining industry which has been going on for hundreds of years. It's an unusual balance of nature and man, and that's definitely what I was wanting to include as opposed to the classic beauty of the lakes that people traditionally think of
@TonysBonsai ohh then it seems like your setup is on point. 💪 again I have not been there . Hope your doing good mate. Seems like the spirit of creating is much intact and you are happy 😊 love it
Ahhhh! Tony and Dad - this is extraordinary!!! Never been to England, so just had to Google the Lake District to quench my curiosity. Hit the nail on the head I'd say - what a great place to hang out as a kid!! Tony - if your Dad doesn't like the painted plastic idea, what about a ramshackle old mining shack peeking out from behind the rock wall?
Now you're talking my kind of language. In the lakes you get small permanent structuralures called bothies or as you say an old metal structure left over would fit perfectly, but obviously they sound like a lot of work, and fortunately even as it is now it does have that feeling that I get whenever I visit which is exactly what I was going for
