- I finally got my hands on the new release caran d'ache luminance portrait colored pencils. The set includes 20 colors well-suited for human and animal portraits, and I also purchased the 4 additional new colors as well (so I have the full 100 set, yay!). I hope you guys like this unboxing/swatching, if you stick around long enough you will see me swatch the original 76 colors as well as I create a brand new swatch chart!

Another guilty new pencil video! And no, it’s not the last. I still have another prefilmed pencil video for you guys😂 in my defense these are from my birthday. Does anyone else have the luminance portrait set and what do you think of them?
I do love how they package their pencils, lovingly placed in those foam gaps. I agree that some of the colours seem a little bright (ie the yellow and orange) but I do love the overall colour selection and they go in well with the 76 set. I need to swatch all of mine out too, as I still haven't done that! 😂
The colors are really nice, I am a little disappointed by the dark flesh pencils because two of them are similar and the other one is not as smooth, but somehow my Indian yellow was fine and I was expecting that one to be the problem pencil! Oh yes you will have to in that big swatchbook!
Oooooo a portrait assortment set 🤩!! So excited to see these!!! Interesting in seeing the bright yellow and orange 😳. That’s good that it’s a light box and the lid has a protective foam covering. I’d do the same just right the names instead of the numbers. Oooh so there is brighter colors because this can be used to draw portraits and animals- that makes more sense! They swatch so nicely 💛👍🏻. Love the range of blues 😍!! The satisfying swatch sheet too 🤩🤩!! Love love love the shades in this set! 💖

thank you!💜Ahh they have been out of stock so long it's a miracle they are back in stock now. I know what you mean- I think the additional skin tones and indigo blue really sold it for me. But hey they are always available open stock too(I manage to convince myself to get whole sets usually though lol)

Use prisma colors, been wanting to try these out but got the magic fly for price point.

Thank you so much:) The luminance can be absurdly expensive, I was lucky to get this set at much lower than the retail price because it was discounted on Jackson's. If you have your eye on them, keep a close watch for sales! That's awesome, Magicfly are at an amazing pricepoint for the value and they would work really great alongside prismacolors!

I will reorganize both the 76 set and this 20 set, but with the portrait box used strictly for all the skin tones. I forgot to order the Caran d'ache empty metal box to store the extra pencils.

Polychromos desperately need to be rearranged as well. Wow I didn’t realize they had an extra metal box you can buy!😳 it bothers me that they don’t fit in with the rest😂
I’m taking a course on Udemy on how to color realistic skin, and we are using bright yellows, bright oranges, bright reds, magenta, they work really well with darker skin tones.

Yay!!! so happy to see you received the new colours- I know you will create beautiful art with them and can’t wait to see what you create with them😊 I am fortunate enough to have them and the 76 set ( incredibly lucky- gifts!). As for the few scratchy pencils- my dark flesh is a bit scratchy too ( I could be wrong but I hear that some are a bit scratchy because of the pigments used to create those colours & they aren’t necessarily defective... I hope that makes sense!!) . They really are beautiful colours and I definitely think they are exactly what the original luminance set was missing ( I would love it if they had more blues tho! Lol!! Blue is my favourite colour).
Annnnddd what is your favourite paper to use them on?!? Haha!! I replied to your comment on the strathmore paper comparison video but not sure if you would have been notified of it ( UA-cam has been strange lately apparently).

Thank you Paige💜 that could definitely explain why the dark flesh is scratchier(but not terribly so)! Although my Indian Yellow turned out fine and smooth so far and I thought that one was going to be scratchy too! So confusing hahaha. There weren't a ton of blues, you're right, but Dark Indigo is such a great addition😍so far I mostly use them on strathmore mixed media but I am planning to try them out on my new bristol vellum 500 because I have a feeling that will work great for colored pencils! Thank you for the idea, I actually think it would be super useful to do some skin tone videos with both luminance and polychromos as there are already a million out there for prismacolor! Oops, I will go back and find your other reply, since I was away from home for a little while I may have missed a few notifcations!

HI! I was just watching Heather Rooney just found her site too...she is Out of this world and seems to be using only these Amazing result ! I bought Derwent Lightfast 36 set then Prismacolor 76 set now I'm crasy wanting to buy those ! The question 100 $ (CAD 40% more then U"S $ )for 20 Portrait set or pay more and get the 76 set .We can sure go crasy buying Art matérial I'm just a beginner lol!!!! but when I see the Portrait done with these Luminance !!!! A Dream come true! Hope you will make a Portrait with those and show us soon........... Thank you so much for your excellent videos! 😁
Heather Rooney was actually my inspiration to start using colored pencils back in 2014! She is amazing, she started with prismas and then moved on to the luminance. I have tried out some Derwent Lightfast pencils and loved them by the way, I'm going to get a set eventually because they work so smoothly. Jealous that you have some! Luminance are so pricey, I understand, maybe buy a few open stock first to see how you like them and then buy a set? The luminance white is a MUST to have either way!

Thnx for another entertaining and informative video .. unfortunately the Caran D'Ache are a bit out of my price range so it was s nice to see the unboxing ..btw, you're not the only one who " nerds out" over opening new art supplies ..there's nothing more satisfyingly am I right? lol
They are definitely quite expensive, even in comparison to other brands like Faber Castell. It really is way too much fun to open new supplies and I am really glad you enjoyed this video💙

The Dark Flesh and Medium Flesh of Polychromos are almost similar, they only difference is the vibrancy, Fortunately they changed it's color name into Salmon and Coral which really fits their Pinkish Tone.
Yes, the dark flesh is a very obvious pink. I am glad they renamed them. I think they may have renamed some other colors too, but my set is mostly old so I am not sure

could i use water mixable pencils on first layer then add illumines wax pencils on top ?
you definitely could, it might be a bit grainy but i think layers of pencil would be able to cover that
Beautiful set of colors! I also got 2 scratchy pencils from my 76 set, I thought it's just my bad luck. To be honest it made me a bit disappointed about the quality because I thought only cheap pencils can be scratchy. But anyway, thank you for a great review ❤️
Which pencils were they out of curiosity? There seem to be some common colors that are scratchy and its quite annoying. I agree with you, these are very pricey so you wouldn't expect that. If your pencils are unusable you can shoot their customer service an email and they usually replace them for you. I hear your frustration though, in the future I'm thinking about trying out the Derwent Lightfast pencils which seem to be pretty strong competition for the luminance.
@@AlexisCassandraArt Light skin tone colors happen to be scratchy in my set. The worst are 832 and 801. Not as bad but still a bit scratchy are 732 and 821. Totally agree that Derwent Lightfast looks very comparable to Luminance. If you get them I will be happy to hear your thoughts about them! 😊

Does the indian yellow color have dark spots on the lead? I do not know if mine came with a manufacturing defect or is it really ... 🤔😔
Hi, mine luckily didn't have dark spots or a rough feel but I heard this happened to many people! It is really annoying.😭 Where did you purchase the pencils? I would email the customer service and explain the situation so they can send you a new pencil:)
@@AlexisCassandraArt Hello, thank you for answering me é I bought it in an online art store here in Spain I have written an email explaining the situation and they have offered to return the money but they cannot replace it because they do not have more and they do not know when they will receive it There are problems in Spain with Caran'Dach supplies and it is not easy to find the new colors ... I wanted to be sure because I did not want to run out of that color ... thank you very much 😘

Sabes a mi los 2 colores que me vinieron mal son el celeste y el azul ☹😒 los pedí por amazon osea el Set de 20, solo de eso me quejo y del marrón oscuro pero no mucho pero es un poquito arenoso
Que mal.ahora tendré que comprar por separado esos tonos y temo que tambien vengan defectuosos por lo que vere unos 6 tonos entre azules y celestes, pero muy mal son tan caros y no sé donde quejarme
Hello, Yes I see the problem with some colors being defective is common. Sometimes you can return on amazon if you catch the problem early enough, it really depends where you buy from. I heard about people speaking directly with caran d'ache about the problem since it really is so expensive. Best of luck to you!

hello, I paid about $60USD on Jackson's. The set retails for around $90 which is absurd but I was lucky the price was down when I purchased it. I just checked blick and its out of stock so you'd have to keep a close eye on it but the price there is $55
I've just earned almost 40 thousand Philippine Peso as a Payment from my 6 consecutive commissions from Europe, I wonder if I deserve to buy those stuffs for at least 20 set of Portrait Version of Luminance.
You may get more bang for your buck with a different set. Luminance are soooo expensive. Even the polychromos are cheaper. But if you would like, you could get a set of luminance then slowly add some pencils open stock!

They’re very pricey. The past few months I’ve gotten into a bad habit of buying too many supplies online😂 as reflected in my recent videos.
