2014/15 rMBP is a very solid machine as a daily driver, especially if you upgrade to NVMe storage and use OCLP to run macOS Monterey. Not sure about the 2015, but my 2014's speakers are trash though. Very tinny sounding. My previous 2011 model had much better speakers. i just bought an 2013 mb pro 15" for under 200€, it´s ridiculously spec´d (original 1gb ssd, 16gig ram, the fastest i7 and dedicated gpu). best thing is it´s absolutly mint looking and will only need a freesh battery (holds up 3 hours light use at the moment). But i totally agree to your reasoning and also have the base spec´d m1 air as a daily machine and its perfect, such an elegant and efficient machine. if you buy intel insist on absolutly bargains otherwise you will get burned..

I’ve spotted a couple of videos popping up on YT where people have found out how to replace SSD’s/memory on M1 MacBook Air. There’s even a couple of articles dating back to 2020 saying that techs in China have been able to do it too. I understand his point of view; we are already at M3, but this applies much more to the American reality. As a Brazilian, for example, I bought a 2019 MacBook Pro, 32GB of RAM + i9 8 cores 16 threads, with 1TB SSD and a 5500m with 4GB VRAM, for a bargain at R$5000 (in comparison, this model was R$29000 when it was released), plus it only had 90 battery cycles-a real steal!
These machines are extremely powerful, and for my use case, better than the Apple Silicon M series, because they have the x86_64 architecture which handles Docker much faster (due to better virtualization support).
It’s not a mistake to buy an Intel series MacBook; the prices have plummeted, and both you and I need to take advantage of this. Unfortunately, Apple consumers tend to think that the latest release is the best and perhaps that the older ones are BAD by definition. This is not true.
Yes, it's true that the operating system support will soon end, but it's a machine that will last for many good years. Consider getting a highly configured 2019 MacBook Pro.
Also, understand that this "cheapness" might only apply to the United States, and in other parts of the world, the M1 is still extremely expensive.
In the end, the right choice is the one that is within your budget.

    • @arthopacini
      @arthopacini 3 місяці тому +1

@@false9593 it’s being great, it’s still pretty fast. Newer models are wayyy faster of course, less heat and better battery life. The speaker is sick, the keyboard is great just need some time to get adjusted to, the screen is awesome, the touchbar is very big, it is a very solid well built computer indeed.
I was using an Ryzen 5 3600 with 32gb of ram running mainly linux, from benchmark sites the multithreaded performance of the i9 in it is 10% lower than the 3600 but there is virtually no difference in single thread performance. I can do all of my work no problem.
The ssd is very very fast, not as fast as modern nvme, but last time I’ve benchmarked it was something around 1-3 gb per second read write
Video is alright I just use for Minecraft, I didn’t use any high gpu usage app.
I did got a simple dongle to connect to an external monitor and have more IO and it works great.
For normal stuff like browsing the web and watching videos etc it will stay cool and silent, if you are doing heavy stuff like compiling code etc it will start its fans and get hot. So I recommend getting a stand for it when working on a table or using a pillow or something if working with it in your lap. The fan noise is not such a big deal.
Memory wise it’s kind of… strange.. I am giving safari a try but it sometimes gets toooo much memory it’s insane. But overall the system is pretty good, anytime I open activity monitor to check on ram usage it never has a high pressure.
But I did run into some problems. I am using dev containers inside vscode, spinning virtual machines, and sometimes there is tons of processing, and the battery drains even when plugged in. That happens only when there is a continuous high usage of cpu. (Note the battery has less than 100 cycles)
The battery life is also great, like yeah it isn’t comparable to newer models but still is a big battery for a power hungry cpu
I would recommend to first identify if economically it makes sense for you to acquire one of this models given you budget and environment, also correlating it to your use case.
If this model is a great opportunity, be aware of the battery health.
      This model is great.
*also, it seems that my previous comment was wrong about docker, it seems to run smoothly on arm, but it’s advised for using arm images, so be aware for compatibility if deploying on x86 hardware, to use an x86 image on deploy.

Personally am using a 2012 Mac Pro 5,1, which have had from new, with a metal GPU, 64GB ram and a USB 3.0/3.1 card. With OCLP have Sonoma installed. Do a lot of graphic work, adjusting scanned photos and making large prints up to 44" wide via Gimp. This machine has plenty of power - and frankly - would be sufficient for the vast majority of users. And I can fix it myself, if needed. And the internal storage available is, basically, limited by only one's budget.

“You don’t need an M series silicon chip” is a statement that applied to most people from 2020-2023. From this year onwards, M1 Macs are selling for easily under £400 right now. £350 is a small price to pay for something that conceivably will last 5-10 years.
Why would anyone buy something last gen which won’t receive any OS updates, and performs about 35% as well as a computer that costs £100 more…?
Do you seriously see no problems arising from using a 2015 MacBook Pro 5 years from now?
I’m as big a fan of the Intel Macs as they come. It’s important not to let nostalgia fog our eyesight, though. Apple silicon is miles out ahead, and the gap will only increase.
For someone with text most would struggle to read in half of their thumbnails, you hold a lot of confidence in your ability to critique mine :)

    • @RadOpsTV
      @RadOpsTV 3 місяці тому

@@montaguebarnabasltd lol normally I don’t bother to reply.. But since you wanted to poke fun at my thumbnails after you put clickbait..I’ll teach you a lesson. One that you should already have learned at your age.
First of all you should know everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that’s yours and this is mine. It obvious you don’t have much knowledge on how thumbnails work and why you should make it one way or another. That was a lowball attempt to insult me, by the way. Lol
Listen up. No, you don’t need a silicon Mac. You should stop spreading this false information and only label it as your opinion. You didn’t need an M series chip several years ago, and you don’t need one now. Sure it’s better in some ways, but you probably should only buy it if you’re a dedicated professional using those programs that require the latest OS updates to fully and efficiently use the cores.
But guess what? Those are very very few. And you’re talking to the audience like if they need it, like if their work demands the silicon chip. It doesn’t for 90% of people. The 2012 and even 2011 MacBook pro’s are more than enough for most people still today in 2024. Given that the specs are fully upgraded which cost less that $80 to do. 16Gb ram and 1tb SSD is still very fast. You’re just spoiled and i don’t care if you don’t admit it. Yes the 2015’s will be fine 5 years, even 15 years from now. They’ll still be powering though and efficiently. They’ll still be useful in day to day tasks at the very least, and still able to run (older) versions of the latest and greatest software. Which is still fine. It can still be done and it will work efficiently. Just not nearly as good as the silicon.
You have been brainwashed by apple to believe you need a computer with “supported” software, which is their way of scaring you into buying the latest macs. You don’t need it. Not unless you actually use a program or app for work that really taxes the system and yeah, then you’ll benefit from a new processor that is 40% more efficient. Most apps that you use on a day to day basis still work and will continue to work on those OS versions in future years. I can attest to that because I use them everyday.
There’s a reason why I use the products that I use. Because they’re the best. I wouldn’t use them if they weren’t the best. If I thought the silicon chip mac’s were better, it have a few.
But that’s not the case. Not in my opinion.
      I run two businesses with 5 MacBook pro’s 2015 model. Some 13” some 15”.
Two 2012 13” specked out models. Two 2017 12” MacBooks. And the rest are pro iPhones and pro iPads that we use.
The 2015 is still superior in terms of hardware quality, design, and most importantly port selections. You don’t need usb-c on your MacBook Pro. I can’t explain enough how much better it is to have the ports instead of the inferior designed and fragile dongles. The quad core and even the dual core are super fast doing daily tasks and they export 4k video in a reasonable about of time. I don’t need it to download in 8 minutes with the silicon chip, I can wait another 5 minutes and I’ll take all the other advantages the intel MacBook Pro has over the M chip.
The 2015’s are peak design IMO they’re considered the most beautiful by the community and the apple logo still glows. Trademark apple. The new silicon Air’s and pro’s look more like Lenovo laptops. They lost all the uniqueness. The boot time on the 2015 is waaaaaaay faster than the silicon chips.
Overall I’ll take the 2015 for all it’s advantages and take a loss on the better speakers and processor the silicon macs have. For $250 I can get a newish 2015 1Tb ssd and 16Gb ram.
The M chip usually has 8 gb ram and 256 Gb memory on most users models and cost $500 (cheapest on eBay right now in acceptable condition)
Seriously, you don’t need the M chip. The intel macs are going to work for dozens of years more. The 2012 is the last to have the disk drive integrated, which I use to run some old software so it’s useful for me. They are also the last model to allow SSD and RAM upgrade, with the disk drive being allowed to be taken out and replaced with a second SSD.
Those are perfect for someone on a budget that need a powerful laptop.
I used my 2011 MacBook Pro for 6 years before upgrading to the 2015 model. And before that it was already used by two different people for work and school. They are workhorses and it’s never frozen on me or failed me.
After 2016 they added the USB c ports and Touch Bar, which they realized they messed up and the 2015 still reigned king. Until the M1 Pro many consider that king now, but only if you need the extra power for work. There’s a reason they hold their value in the used market. People buy them and use them.

@@RadOpsTVI don't have time to write almost 1000 words, unfortunately. I'll reply to your points one by one, though.
I'm surprised you took my honest thumbnail criticism so personally. Did you think laughing and calling mine "terrible" would be ignored..? I take pride in what I make, and my long form videos are doing very well, not least because of their effective thumbnails. It's a great thing that we can both make money creating videos about things we enjoy, and it's safe to say both of us are doing well in that regard - if you have criticism at least make it constructive, and try to come across less condescending ("listen up" and "I'll teach you a lesson" spring to mind!).
Also, you're absolutely right. The video, and most of my others, are all opinion-based. So are almost all tech videos, though. That's obvious without me labelling my content as such. You've written a lot defending the 2015 and older Macs. I implore you to put your opinions on the matter into a video (or two ;) ).
I completely understand your love for the 2015 Pro. Does that make anyone who believes M1 Macs are better for the majority of people brainwashed? No. Of course not. Both are Apple products. Both were touted as the best in the world at release. The M1 Air is 4 years old at this point, yet I consider it up there with the latest and greatest computers.
Some of your points are a bit contradictory, by the way. You talk about not minding a few minutes extra rendering, but then celebrate a couple of extra seconds at boot as though it's all that matters...
Also, the 2015 Pro can render 4K, yes, if a little slowly. Working in real time with multiple timelines, though, you'll hear the fans at full blast, and there will be slowdowns before you've reached the point of rendering.
Like I said... not going to respond to every bit you wrote, because a lot of it just highlights a difference in opinion.

Also about to buy a 2015 or 2017 MB Air with a 2TB SSD for a mobile Movie machine and email terminal for an elderly relative. Biggest reason I have not got to Apple Silicon...the ridiculous price for storage. 2TB is the bare minimum for my need. I do not want to lug around portable SSD drives. My daily work machine as an IT Manager and Graphics Pro is a 2013 MacPro 10-core. ZERO problems. Bosses M1 Max MBP only feel faster is boot time and dull tasks like copying. In Creative Cloud...not so much of a difference. One day, when the price is right, I will upgrade to an M1 Max MBP 16. Prices are getting there. Mine will have to have a 4TB or 8TB SSD. Same with a Studio. It would be awesome if Apple made their devices with a super fast 256 SSD that is OS/Apps only and then a slot for storage for files. Have you ever restored from TimeMachine a full 2TB Boot Drive. TAKES FOR EVER. Learned my lesson. Now I always partition. 1 for OS and Applications, another for files.

The m1 mac's came at the right time... i've since scored a m1macmini 16gb model... and oh boy, what a immense difference it made!!

I do collect Macs and sure got a bunch of Intel Macbooks, Mac Minis and iMacs but you are so very right. They all can't compete with the Apple Silicon. I also got an M1 Pro Macbook for serious work and it lasts me the whole day. Sometimes, for fun I bring an old Macbook. When I only need to display some PDF files at a meeting or other light work that is not mission critical. The thing is, old Macbooks still look very modern and sleek but the power is gone. Apples design and choice of materials really made them timeless. The 2015 Retina Macbooks were incredible at their time. There was no serious replacement until the i9 came but then all Intel got crushed by the M1. With Apple, there is always the right time to buy one. You bought the 2015, you were able to get 7 or 8 good years out of it. Same will happen when you got a MBP M1 Pro in 2021. If you bought an i9 in 2019, you only got 2 - 3 years and now you don't want to sell it for 600$. People still think they have a high value laptop but its not true. I've seen M1 Pros going for 1000$ used and they are so much better and they basically come with an XDR display on a Laptop. The prices for MB up till 2012 should be 100$ or better even lower (sure 100$ for a 2012 15" with good specs) and a high spec 2015 should be around 150$, not more. Lets be honest, even the best Retinas (2015) get 10 years old next year. I've yet to find a replacement Battery that is really good, like they were new from apple. Most batteries you buy are new but old. I think that will really kill the use as a laptop in the long run.

The fear for an SSD dying is not theoretical!
I have a 2015 MacBook Air that I did not use for 2 years. When I tried to turn it on again, it had trouble booting. The drive would randomly show up as a boot drive or disappear. Was it the controller? Nope. I replaced the SSD with a new one and voila - I could reinstall and the SDD is faster and bigger than the original! I use at on a daily basis for light tasks again.
Imagine this happens after 5-7 years with your MacBook Pro that you paid $3500 for.

Intel Macs are still worth buying and have their place imo, especially with the price drops since the M-series Macs took over. Graphics are obviously where they fall short, but quad core i7's are still plenty capable for many daily tasks. If you're worried about thermals/battery life, there are apps to mitigate that like Macs FanControl, Turbo Boost Switcher, gfxCardStatus and CPUSetter. I run my rMBP with only 2 physical cores active with Hyper Threading most of the time and its fine for light stuff like web browsing, email, movies, productivity, etc. When I need more power for something like gaming, I just adjust my settings. I use my heavily-upgraded 2010 and 2013 Mac Pros for Photoshop and 32-bit games, and I use a mid-2012 MacBook Pro (upgraded with two 500 GB SSDs and 16 GB of RAM) and a 2013 MacBook Air (upgraded with a 500 GB NVMe SSD) as work commute laptops. As a writer, editor and light on-the-go gamer, these and other Intel Macs are still fast and practical.
It's funny - many view the 2023 M2 Ultra Mac Pro as redundant, in that you can get almost identical performance in the much-cheaper M2 Ultra Mac Studio, but I think the 2023 Mac Pro makes the 2019 Intel Xeon Mac Pro look even worse. The 2023 Mac Pro goes all-in on Apple Silicon: it can run native ARM applications, Intel apps through Rosetta and iOS apps through the ARM architecture, and thus has vast app compatibility. The 2019 Mac Pro, however, can't run iOS apps due to the Intel architecture, and can't even run 32-bit apps due to Catalina and beyond dropping 32-bit support. To me, the 2019 Mac Pro is an objectively powerful and very upgradeable Mac that just can't run much in the grand scheme of things.

Human Revolution is my third-favourite game of all time (between Life is Strange at #3 and Fallout: New Vegas at #1), but since it's 32-bit, you can't play it on 10.15 Catalina and up. :(
I'm also genuinely angry at Valve for not updating the Mac versions of the Half-Life and Portal games to 64-bit. They knew Catalina would drop 32-bit app support, and they've had over four damn years at this point. To me, this isn't a matter of profitability for Valve; this is a matter of respecting their players and allowing them to keep playing the games they paid for. Plenty of people view Valve as apathetic, no longer caring about game development now that they have a monopoly over PC game distribution, and Valve neglecting the Mac versions of their flagship games is another aspect of this carelessness.

So upgradability wasn't really a thing for me as it turned out - also I started to learn its better to get the tool that gets the thing done that I want to get done, than building the tool that gets the jobs done that I want to get done. Then M1. I needed a better monitor for my photography and video grading - a good color screen with hardware color profiles would cost me about two thirds of what a M1 Air basemodel would go for. Plus I wanted portability for tethered photoshoots. I've been on a base model M1 Air preowned for the last 3 years now and the thing is absolutely amazing, all this power AND it's is silly portable.

Why do you buy "constantly new stuff"?
I am building my own PCs since the 90s and learned this: as a gamer, the only thing you more or less regularly upgrade is the graphic card, and even that wasn't a topic any more in recent years when games started to align to the performance of current gen gaming consoles by design. These days, you can run any game with a AMD 5700 or an NVIDIA 1070. But eventually Macs are nothing you use for gaming. When upgrading my PC, I noticed that the most benefit over the years originate in switching from HDDs to SSDs and in switching from 8 GB RAM to 16 GB RAM, which I run on all my machines and never saw anything justifying to upgrade RAM further. I also learned that my needs are met by 1 TB of permanent storage. So that is a config I ran for years on a hackintosh: 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. I also learned that doing a major upgrade of the CPU is essentially a complete rebuild of the PC interior: you need a new motherboard, new (as faster) RAM, a more powerful energy supply and a better CPU cooler. You can keep the chassis, its fans and the permanent storage unless you want to benefit from faster access speed like PCI-E instead of SATA.
I ran a hackintosh since macOS Sierra but bought my first Apple computer (since the Apple IIe) when Apple moved to Apple Silicon. That machine, a mini M1, configured based on the parameters established above from experience, supports my work (Software development) for more than three years now and there is no need to upgrade anything. I will run this until there are no macOS updates anymore for it. And there is still no pressure to ask for more RAM than 16 GB or more permanent storage but 1 TB. And with those parameters Apple Silicon Macs are still competitive in pricing. Despite Apples unreasonably looking upgrade price tags.

    • @PvtAnonymous

buddy, the computers you're talking about are 12 years old at this point. Most modern apps don't work on them anymore and they are starting to get to an age where the capacitors will fail at one point - and good luck repairing that on your own. Not even speaking about recent macOS versions, which you can get with OpenCore, but will run "suboptimal" to say the least with the natural limitations of memory swap (SSD even in RAID will be too slow) and the hard capped 16 GBs of RAM. So for anything more than mail and typing documents these will not make you happy.
