The Snape Lyre

  • The Snape lyre finds are thought to be of a musician, a bard or Scop, the lyre, with plain mounts, with an unusual Oak soundboard, but also lightly constructed with arms fully hollowed out to the top joints.
    Quartersawn Oak Soundboard
    Maple body and yoke
    Figured birch bridge and tailpiece
    Aquila Nylgut strings
    pine and plywood case, painted with milk paint
    This Lyre was made custom made made for Tim Rousham
    updated plans of the 2024 version will be added to the lyre making CD/Book/Download later this year.

    Do you use a pinned mortise and tenon joint at the yoke?

      yes, on this lyre that is what the joint is in effect with the bronze mount as the pin, ;-).

    Do you think they had sound holes?

      No, i don't think soundhboles proper as we understand them appear widespead until much later, and other than the drilled holes in the Trossingen lyre.
