Quick correction. I agree with Penn that people misuse "the exception proves the rule." But his explanation of what it really means is also wrong. The way the phrase is meant to be taken is this: "The exception TESTS the rule." Among the definitions of the word "prove" is a somewhat archaic definition, which is a synonym for "test." Think of the phrases "testing ground" and "proving ground," which both mean the same thing.
Excellent comment. That phrase always seemed nonsensical to me, now I know why.

The exception PROOFS the rule.
It's a similar mistake to the way people say, 'according to theory', when they actually mean, 'according to hypothesis/assumption/delusion'.
Just because they have a false-logic, or oft repeated common response, to superficially appease their ego, it does not mean it is correct.

The first time I really started thinking about the illogic of the phrase was about twenty years ago, I was listening to a debate on NPR. One dude made a claim, second dude pointed out an exception. First dude goes, “But the exception proves the rule!” And I was like, WHATTTT???
I’ve got cereal paisley and discovered Penn Juliette a couple months ago on the magic shows. I enjoyed the conversation he had with Lawrence. They say you learn something every day and I did thank you.

@@bikerfirefarter7280 You misunderstood my meaning. Technology and science are intertwined by necessity. My point was to pass along Clark's insight about how those who are not familiar with the details of how a technology works would tend to see it the same way as someone who believed in magic. Imagine someone from Mark Twain's time seeing a smartphone being used today.
Twain used this meme in his novel "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court." A time traveler from Twain's time went back in time to King Arthur's time, and convinced them that they could perform magic by using knowledge of science from the future.

Listening to impressively successful people talking about Richard Feynman gets me all the time. It gives a very accurate parameter of how important he still is. Cheers Mr. Feynman! We all miss you dearly.

Penn - My father was an atheist (far before it was as accepted as it is today) and was always irritated by lies. He saw your show LONG ago in Vegas and was really happy that you approached magic with honesty. It really did change his view of magic that it could be just good entertainment instead of trickery... Great stuff... I really enjoyed the cast!
Loved every second of this penn is amazing I would love the opportunity to meet him and sit down and talk pick his brain and get some advice on a few things.. Lawrence you are great as well u have truly a great mind and are a great teacher.. and I’m so glad to see you back we need you!!

Mmm! I have always liked this man for the way he uses his mind. What a lovely way to start a conversation. He says, "I believe the best definition of an intellectual I have ever heard is someone who is willing to change their mind with information." From what I have read he started off being Vegan purely for the health benefits and then experienced a real emotional change. He stated that he no longer wants to be apart of the suffering. THAT is intellectual. Thank you, Mr. Jillette! :) ...and, Thank you Mr. Krauss for having such an interesting and compassionate person on your show! :)

when Penn speaks about being lied to and seeing Scientists and Magicians as the same, it made me sad and upset that people still do this, but now widespread on social media.
He’s so spot on about Guns ‘n’ & and Roses not pushing the envelope of what they do, ever. Just mediocre and famous for doing exactly what people thought they would in the most pedestrian way possible.

This is my first time listening to Kraus interviewing someone I really respect - Penn Jillette. However, it will be my last since his constant interruptions with his amateur interjections “ummmm, yeah, yeah, OK, uh huh, exactly”. Dear god, please..... Mr Kraus, clean up your act, go back to basic interviewing school. I will not be subscribing to your channel even though you ask interesting questions

Penn, you are wrong about homelessness. Yes there are plenty of drug users and mentally ill people but if you live in Los Angeles or another major city, you do because that's where the jobs are. In recent years jobs have been outsourced, eliminated by automation or work for companies that no longer exist.. If you are laid off, or your occupation is no longer relevant and your rent $900 per month, you run a serious risk of being homeless. I have seen many people living out of the trunk of their car and work 6 days a week and rents continue to rise. I know that you are libertarian and I agree with some of those principles but the fact is we need entry level housing, not more mc-mansions

When I first saw Lawrence. It was on tv debating some muslim guy. He was unusually offensive but did make some fair points. Of course when I saw him speak later on every other place I realized who this guy is and that insult he feels when talking with dishonest debaters. I love you Lawrence, I used to be a devout muslim once. Free now

@1:40:40 Lawrence refers to colleagues who stifle conversation about technical solutions to climate change for fear that doing so "might suggest to people that 'we don't have to change' ". But isn't resistance to change the fundamental perceptual layer from which problem solving itself emerges?
I disagree with the notion that English has the most beautiful literature, not necessarily because I believe another language outclasses English in that regard but because I've read some incredible poetry written in several other languages and I've come to believe that each language is capable of its own innate beauty and unique ability for expression. What one language lacks is what another language possesses, and each one creates infinite variery in expression. For instance English lacks past and future tenses of 'when', neither does it possess gendered nouns. Without those grammatical functions there are sentences that I can create in French, Swedish or German which would never translate directly to English and they would lose a part of their meaning in translation. Simply put I believe that there exists too much nuance with which to color and contrast with in other languages to definitively declare one as superior. They all bring something unique to the table.

I love Penn but couldn't make it through this because (i didn't realize this bothered me until now) I can't follow with the over talking, where someone is trying to say something and the other person is trying to say the same words/trying to finish the other person's sentence.
Everytime an artist make something social and intelligent it has artistic integrity. That only possible in a created universe.

I have to admit that I have not read all 277 comments already posted, so this may have already been covered. If so, I apologize for rehashing the points below.
I have to admit moreover to being in awe of these two men, both extremely intelligent, great communicators, and very thoughtful in their opinions and positions. I have, however, two wee nits to pick with Penn Jillette on the subject of language.
The first is his explanation the the old adage "the exception proves the rule." If you consult the OED you find the very first definition of "prove" to be "test." In all fairness, almost everyone gets this expression wrong, and even more so "the proof of the pudding is in the tasting."
If you simply substitute "test" for "prove" or "proof" in these expressions they immediately make sense, and are clearly true. Exceptions do "test" the validity of any widely accepted "rule." In the same way, whether or not a pudding (probably the savory pudding virtually unknown in America) is well made and properly cooked is made clear by eating or tasting the dish.
The second disagreement I have with Penn Jillette is much more a matter of opinion. He spoke passionately about how he has removed all gender pronouns from his routines. I cannot agree that using they, their, or them as a neutral singular pronoun is beneficial to communication in English. He is, of course, entitled to do as he likes in his own communication and in his public performances. English, however, can be woolly enough, having verbs and nouns with multiple and often contradictory meanings. Adding to the confusion by tinkering with pronouns, however well-intentioned, is a fad that careful writers and speakers certainly hope will soon pass.
Lets ease and gentle in.

Penn switched to a mostly plant based diet and lost 100 pounds. He then learned about why others are ethical vegans, and cut out the last of the animals from his plate. He no longer eats what comes out of animals either. Why switch?
1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases)
2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases
3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen.
4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water
5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution
6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation
7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses
8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity
9-Animal welfare, obviously
10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation.
11- Longer lifespan.
12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.)
13- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1.5 trillion in health care costs (Oxford Study)

nmeunier There are aspects of reality that people with a conservative worldview seem to find difficult to comprehend, and unwilling to accept. Stop confusing your subjective opinions for objective reality. And get off your arrogant "high horses", and thinking that you "know better" and _are_ "better" than other people.
The conservative mindset tries to force reality into simplistic dichotomies: "Good" vs "Evil"; "Us" and "Them"; male and female. It's not just a matter of getting "woke" to evolving cultural norms. It's also a matter of seeing the world the way it actually is, and accepting reality. Dichotomies are just a crude first approximation. They are not reality, which occurs not just in black and white, but in every shade of gray.
Whether you accept it or not, human sexuality and gender identity are complicated. That is not an opinion, but a fact. If you cannot accept this, it is your myopia and intransigence that is at issue, and not someone else's willingness to listen, learn, sympathize, and change their views, as Penn jillette has done.
Conservatism is a facet of human nature that is built into all of us, but that doesn't mean that we have to succumb to it. A conservative attitude of intolerance is strongly influenced by culture as well. My criticism is: Why are you content to let your mind remain in that condition, when you have the capacity to change it? Why do you want to indulge it, and feel proud of it, when it is a source of anxiety, fear, and hatred?
Perhaps you should pay closer attention to Penn's definition of "intellectual", and try to aspire to that. In my view, remaining ignorant and intolerant when you have the capacity for growth is unforgivable. You were born not only with a penis (as you seem anxious for us all to know), with a brain as well. Why not try using both of them?

'The exception proves the rule' also holds when people try to rebut a generalization with one example. For example, when someone points out that men are expected to propose marriage and someone else objects that they know a woman who proposed to a man. The fact that they know one woman who proposed and are balancing that against every other heterosexual man they know who has gotten married proves the rule. They only see the exception as having that extreme weight because of the rule.
Hmm and homosexuality proves heterosexuality?

I think I understand your guy's sentiments. However, I think all Penn is trying to say is that there is indeed a spectrum of gender identification, so it is a more tolerant action to remove strict binary rhetoric when addressing an audience, or anywhere else in life. He gave an anecdote where he misgendered someone and that made him feel like shit. That's all. Im not saying that, and i dont think he is either, that we cant call men and woman by their gender, but to be more sympathetic to the times and the people in it. Idk all im saying is that if u think u disagree with him maybe try to see what his actual stance and argument is. I myself my be totally wrong as well but if I am, I'd like to find out, instead of just dismissing someones point altogether.

That 3 mile island death toll point is a good one, very well put that the accident was much deadlier then people know and that is an argument in favor of nuclear safety not against.
But another point i feel is almost never brought up in the debate on wether nuclear power is responsible for to many death -aside from the obvious fact the debate was settled by data a long time ago and nuclear is multiple orders of magnitude less lethal per W/h then any other - is the deaths of the major meltdowns.

Fukoshima was a natural disaster, one of the most damaging deadly and costly in history. 20 000 people died.... from the earthquake.
The deaths were not caused by any meltdown, in fact the total number of casualties caused by nuclear meltdown in this case is a big fat zero.
Nobody died from radiation-yet. And even in the worst case scenario in 100y looking back almost nobody will have died due to nuclear compared to nature, the 20k deaths were due to the earthquake and subsequent tsunami not radiation. In fact its now safe to live there again...
