On Nov 15th and 16th, 2022, The Origins Project Foundation hosted our first public events in North America at the beautiful Orpheum Theater in Phoenix, AZ (we had hosted an event in Iceland in September during our Greenland-Iceland Travel Adventure). There was no better way to begin this new series than with a dialogue onstage with Richard Dawkins, and that was the substance of our first night’s event. As all those who have followed us will know, Richard and Lawrence have done many dialogues together, onstage and online, and so this dialogue needed to be new and different.
Richard had just published a new book entitled “Books do Furnish a Life”, which is a compilation of essays he had written about other scientists and writers, and also transcripts of dialogues he had had with numerous people, including me. Lawrence decided this new book would provide a wonderful opportunity to jump off in new directions, and it turned out to be just that. The response from the audience and from those who had seen many of our previous dialogues was very positive, and they came off stage feeling like it was one of the best public conversations we have had. We hope those of you who watch it, or listen to it, here will agree.
Following the 90 minute dialogue onstage Lawrence and Richard asked for questions from the audience, and after an intermission, they answered many of these This Q&A will be offered as an exclusive post for Critical Mass paid subscribers, to thank you for your support of our efforts. It will remain behind the Critical Mass paywall for 1 month, and then will be released to the general public.
We hope all of you enjoy this conversation, and Richard’s remarkable enthusiasm about science and writing, and his insights about the world. In a future post, we will release the video record of the second night’s conversation, a panel discussion with leading physicists about the current state of cosmology.

I feel like I've developed my own ideas and branched off from my Krauss Dawkins beginnings, (as Lawrence might say, I grew out of it) but I am still grateful for these two, because they anchor me to a time when I had only just begun journeying into thought and had not failed over and over so much, learned I knew so little, and discovered having good ideas isn't enough. It's a sad thought, but at least I'm not so easily lost. Or not so easily tossed. Thank you for still being here.

It is such pleasure to hear brilliant minds conversing in a rational fashion. It is such a departure from conventional discourse, particularly in the media. 37:34 Interesting. So the only reason we can even classify different species is because data is missing to make it all one continuous line. So in a sense defining different species is a somewhat arbitrary decision determined by the archeological discoveries we made. It's an incomplete picture ( which is still useful in understanding where we come from).

Not exactly. A species is a taxonomically irreducible population of like individuals (with subspecies or races - geographically restricted bird types for example).
A cardinal trait of members of a species is that they can produce sexually competent offspring to continue the line.
A given species can divergently evolve into two or more new, separate species due to factors that create physical or genetic isolation - geographical separation and restriction or drastic but stably inheritable mutation.
That's why Darwin was so enamoured by finch species diversity within the Galapagos island group for example - different beak types for different food sources on separate islands (that they were unable to sustain flight between to continue exchanging same-species genetic determinants) and the gradual emergence of separate species from a common ancestor.
Look at canines and humans, we might look very different from other members of our species group, yet we successfully interbreed and produce offspring that can do the same.
Diversity is key (outbred stock), to avoid inbreeding which can increase the concentration of bad gene copies (alleles) in a population.

BTW Lawrence, I hope you will connect with with Jordan Peterson again and help him to break out of conspiracy mode re Global Warning ... he's been promoting a number of 'experts' who seem to have a skewed view ... Though I know it's not so easy talking to him as he has a tendency to waffle on. Richard met him once and had the wisdom to keep the encounter brief and focused. And thank you Richard for enlightening me about the workings of evolution.
Listening to Richard read the Yates passage brought several years to my eyes. Existence and consciousness is weird innit?

Of course these dialogues are wonderful. These two people are the among the best specimens of humanity. But, as in the case of most of Prof. Krauss's dialogues, they are mostly monologues.

1:21:45: Evolution is not still taught in schools in Iran. Most students probably know how long it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun (to their credit), but they know nothing about evolution, unless they have had their own study.
