  • Brisbane Ferries: A Historical Journey
Brisbane's ferries have been a vital link for the city since the very beginning. Their story stretches back to the early days of European settlement, even predating some of Brisbane's iconic bridges.
    *From Rowboats to Steam Power:*
    * The earliest ferries, around the 1840s, were humble rowboats, with one route operating between Customs House and Kangaroo Point. Another early service ran close to where Victoria Bridge stands today, but this became obsolete with the bridge's construction.
    * By the 1860s, services expanded, with ferries crisscrossing the river at various points.
    * The year 1883 marked a turning point with the introduction of Brisbane's first steam-powered passenger ferry. This innovation significantly boosted capacity and efficiency.
    *Council Control and Evolving Services:*
    * Brisbane City Council took control of ferry services in 1893, initially leasing them to private operators.
    * The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a rise in vehicular ferry services alongside passenger options. Some notable routes included Bulimba and Teneriffe, and Kangaroo Point.
    * The devastating 1893 flood highlighted the importance of ferries, as the Victoria Bridge was destroyed. A cable-operated punt temporarily filled the gap until the bridge's reconstruction.
    *The CityCat Era and Beyond:*
    * The late 20th century saw a modernization of the ferry system. In 1996, the iconic CityCat ferries were launched, known for their high speeds and passenger capacity. These sleek catamarans revolutionized river travel in Brisbane.
    * Today, Brisbane's ferry network, operated by RiverCity Ferries, offers a mix of services. The CityCat remains the backbone for fast commutes, while the CityHopper provides a free inner-city loop for sightseeing and leisure. Cross River ferries cater to specific routes across the river.
Brisbane's ferries stand as a testament to the city's growth and development. From humble beginnings, they have transformed into a vital part of the public transport network, offering a scenic and convenient way to navigate the river.

I like the decision to do a tilt shift look on this. Make the traffic look cool.

    Hi Brad,
Around 2010~ish I had the pleasure of visiting my youngest and her hubby when they lived in Cleveland, Brisbane.
We went in to Brissie for a day, mainly to show me around.
My favourite area is Southbank, so we went on a cat, but extended the ride all the way downstream.
On the way back we sat at the very back; where those gorgeous motors roared into full flight.
Magnificent!, and they I think can only do that there (downstream, away from the city). 😃

Early morning commute to work for those on opposite sides of the river.
