Even on his off days he sings better than most will ever be able to. He is an underrated singer, his voice is clear and velvety, yeah powerful and confident. He is articulate and agile but also stays soulful and you instantly know who it is after a couple syllables because it’s unique. I love his voice so much

He was batching about the way that 'Piano Man' Was cut on the radio, as many Joel fans know, it was a nearly 6 minute song. Artists songs like MeatLoaf and Bat out of Hell suffered the same treatment.
Don't blame Billy for saying such things in the Entertainer, just saying what he feels..

    • @joe-vz6hx

the difference is "artists" like meatloaf deserve that treatment lol

In the case of Meat Loaf, I appreciate the cutting. The less, the better.

And saying it pretty wittily and articulately I have to admit as a Billy Joel fan who has not always given him due credit for his lyrical acumen. (Not always sharp but more often than not quite impressive ). His skill at melody is in my mind almost unparalleled .

This is by far the most recent video or image of Billy Joel with no facial hair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without facial hair past the release of River of Dreams. In addition, him sitting on a stool playing guitar is even more rare than that. The combination make this seem so bizarre… But I like it.

Billy shaved at some point during the River of Dreams tour and spent much of 1994 clean-shaven. He remained beardless throughout the entire Face to Face tour with Elton John that summer. This video at Harvard was taped in October so he clearly hadn’t grown the beard back yet. However, when he accepted the Billboard Century Award two months later, his beard had returned. He has had facial hair ever since. So, all that to say… You are probably right. This is quite possibly the last footage of him without any facial hair. And it’s sad that I was able to comment this much on the topic…

It's about the ups and downs of the music industry and the hoops performers have to jump through in order to get their music heard and how it can eat you up and spit you out, where often you can go from being flavour of the month to your music ending up in the back of the discount rack when a new performer comes along.

I loved the Midnight Special & Wolfman Jack...IMO one of the best music tv shows ever. I have several volumes of MS dvds, one of which has an awesome version of Travelin Prayer.

looks like the actual answer was cut off in this video at the beginning, meaning the title should be changed to something like "Billy Joel plays 'The Entertainer' "

He writes the melody first and then adds the lyrics afterwards based on what he thinks is the mood of the song.

The Midnight Special was fantastic! And Wolfman Jack was such in icon that he even had cameo in Spielberg's "American Graffiti." Don Kirchner's Rock Concert was popular as well.

That was my reaction when I first heard the song 1974: What WAS he griping about? He had a hit song on the radio (Piano Man), he was making records, playing concerts and even was on TV (yes, he WAS on Midnight Special, himself). How many struggling young pop/rock performers would have killed to be where he was at that time?

....and he was right. Radio edits to songs cheapen what they created to play more quantity with quality being a distant second of importance.

I love this one so much! How he apologises for being "politically incorrect" at 3:01, the little "Jesus..." when his voice breaks at 4:17, and the way he says "he's already _bitching_ about being a star!" at 4:47. So funny...

What's with the knock on "The Midnight Special"? I enjoyed that show. It was a great showcase for the popular acts at the time. Not sure why Joel would take such a gratuitous cheap shot at it and Wolfman Jack, who has a significant place in rock history, at least in California and the border states, with his presence on radio in the 60's.
