- Junkyards don't always provide the best barn find episodes because the cars don't come with stories, but this junkyard is different. Tom stops by an old friend's place to see some vintage race cars and is surprised by something unusual and out of this world.

i need to contact this location i have need of his expertise i have 3 rx7s that are within the first 100 built and at one time had over 100 at my location in texas
You need to introduce yourself to Matt's Offroad Rescue. He is a MAJOR Corvair collector, including a couple of Lakewoods. One is converted to the most popular offroad rescue vehicle ever. It's called the Morrvair.
Good Idea!!
Matt and his whole family would go nuts in this place!!
Tom, I really enjoy your videos!! Even though you may cover a car or make that doesn't interest me, but the stories behind the cars do.
I sent Matt a link on a 1967 fabtech GT40 built on a Corvair that's here in Maine. Man looks like a lot of car for starting price of $7,500
@@whitetailfreak2275 And so wouldn't Adam LZ for the RX-7's he has the cash flow and definitely the space I sent the link to a mutual friend hopefully he sees it
its almost criminal to leave these cars just sitting outside in the elements
Are you willing to contribute to the pole barn fund?
@@redmondjpI bet Adam LZ wood for all these rx7s and miatas
if you were a serious collector then surely its common sense o protect your investments@@redmondjp
Could probably sell all those S1 RX7's back to Japan... or New Zealand, or Australia.
@@redmondjp The money he'd spend up front to build something to keep them out of the elements, would be made back in sales for the whole cars or parts. Especially for those FC3s and early Miatas.
Dad had a Corvair panel van in the late 60's. He carried a pair of spare belts and hated the van because of that belt either jumping off or breaking. I would sit on his lap and shift for him, I can't remember if it was on the tree or floor, as I was only 6. Dad passed away this past February at age 95, and I'm still driving a manual.
If it were a manual it definitely would have been on the floor. Belts would get thrown if they were overly tightened. Ribbed belts greatly alleviated the problem also. My dad and I restored 30 Corvairs
he had it to tight ...they dont jump off if they are set up right
All right, I'll let him know. 🤨
Oh man, I was NOT expecting to see an Ultravan! That's Ultra cool! They were built just a few miles from my house, and the dealership is just a couple blocks away. That's fantastic!
Thanks Tom and Hagerty…. Love this channel, and the community that it brings together of like-minded enthusiasts
The biggest lie in the car business. “I will restore it” said by a person between 75 and death!
We are all guilty
Sad truth, he knows he's lying to himself. He wants to believe.
Best show on youtube right here. Thank you Tom and Hagerty.
That corvair wagon is beautiful, would make an awesome weekend driver
That wagon is so much a piece of automotive history and would be an amazing car to drive all the time. Love those old corvair vans too.
The amount of things you can find at junk yards is amazing!
This is *not* a junk yard by no means.
@@rjung_ch More of a collection for now!
I agree 100%, but you must dig deep and be patient, your efforts will most definitely be rewarded.
To me, that's more of a personal collection than a junk yard.
Tom, you are the perfect person to bring these stories to light, your passion and genuine interest makes your explorations great fun to watch. PS, I have met you twice in Gardiner, Maine. One of those times you had your own Cobra there.
Great video but man, kinda sad seeing all those cars rot away.
We holidayed in the Fairfax District of LA in 2010 and I took some photos of an Ultravan parked on the street around the corner from our motel. It was clearly registered and driven. It was unusual but we had no idea how rare it was. Fascinating to see another one and hear a bit of its story. Thanks.
I love that 67 Tempest Sprint !!!!
Truly a piece of Americana, what stories those cars could tell. I love old junk yards, especially when they are someone’s personal junk collection. So many useful and beautiful cars that are just begging to be driven again. Those old Corvairs have such interesting design elements and body lines.
Working on old cars is definitely something that connects one to the past, possibly connecting one to his/her ancestors. Just an incredible feeling driving an old car that one spent the time, energy, and resources to rejuvenate and make road worthy again - connects one to all previous owners, such rich history in automotive engineering. Love this Channel!!
I agree, but you have to dig deep and be patient, your efforts will always be rewarded.
I was working at a Brooklyn, N.Y. Oldsmobile dealer in 1972 and was offered the job of Mazda technician (mechanic). I was sent to the BRAND NEW training center in Piscataway, N.J. In the class I was in, we were told we were the FIRST class of techs in the East Coast. I have a diploma from the class in November of 1972. We were taught by Gene Jenks of Mazda. It was an incredible and fun, journey !!!
Sad to see all these cars rot 😵💫
Especially all the RX7s..
Total respect! I love these places like this, it's a dying breed. Thanks for the video and sharing Barn find Hunters!
Thank-you for making these videos. There is such a lack of appreciation for old cars that need restoration. These videos just make me wish my grandpa's collection of cars was still there. I spent hours wondering around in his old cars. Stuff from the 40's - 70's, and a couple from the 80's. This would have been in the later 1990s. He had a 55 Cameo in the barn. The only one that got a roof over it. It was pretty much his baby. Old 66 Tempest Convertible that my mom drove when she was not much more than a teenager. I'd give just about anything to go walk through those rows of cars one more time.
In my area all the junkyards either closed up or they dont ket you wonder around... its what are you looking for and I'll tell you if we have it... miss the days of being able to just walk thru a yard... thanks for sharing
Would love to have that Lakewood. Thanks for taking us along.
Excellent. I had Corvairs and many rotary Mazda's starting in 1969. Now MX-5's are my passion. I have three. All have a Hagerty grocery bag in the boot.
Three years ago I sold my 1967 Sprint Firebird it had a 4.1 OHV 4 barrel like the one in your video and had a 4 speed. With 25,000 miles on it. It ran great and would keep up with any small block. Nice car, I wish I didn’t sell it but it was an “offer you can’t refuse”
Thanks god someone saved that Alfa.
Back in 1971 my friend's mom had a 1960 Corvair that he would borrow and we would go out cruising in. Of course we would always try to push it with that two speed Powerglide so at least once a night we were out there rolling the fan belt back on. You could always tell when it hopped off first by the lack of the noise of the cooling fan and also the generator light would come on.
GREAT WORK
THANK YOU for all your extra efforts!!!
its people like this who upset me the most... like you have cars that would be easily put on the road or someones dream build just wasting away and rotting, it would be different if they where not rotting but this is a crime !
Edit: also im glad the guy did enjoy the cars. he used the hell out of them. so at least they where not bought and just say they where used. i'd kill to get a 2nd gen rx7
Thanks for the video and the walk down memory lane. The first car I ever drove was my grandfather's 1962 Corvair Wagon with an automatic transmission with the strangest (at least back then) shift lever mounted on the dash. He drove it everywhere for quite a few years as his daily. I didn't realize it was so rare.
@MattsOffRoadRecovery might want some of those Corvairs
I am sure @Mattsoffroadrecovery would love to add some of those corvairs to his collection 😉
Imagine if those cars were stored indoors and covered...So much $$$$$ sitting there.
that guy will never restore that van
He'll never restore any of them. He's a hoarder.
Great story and history behind it.
Thank you for sharing!
Great video Gentleman. When I was 11 back in 1970, my mom had a 68 or 69 4 door Corvair. And we always had a spare fan belt and a Mason jar with oil in it in the trunk. I remember us being on the side of the road, with some kind of a problem a couple of times. We were all happy when in 1972 mom got a 72 Chevrolet Malibu 2 door with a 250 6 cylinder (NEW). Mom was happy 😊
It is a good day when you can find a place like this. ❤
The Ultravan is a super rare find, but I know of 2 others, one in Paducah, KY and one at the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville. Hope he gets it going.
Amazing collection!
How's that a collection? It's a junkyard.
This is why I sooo love watching shows like this
I’ve had two Corvairs, both mid engine V-8 conversions. ‘66 Kelmark conversion with a 283 and a ‘66 Crown conversion with a DZ-302 out of a 69 Camaro. That Crown Corvair was a rocket ship.
I will never forget the first gen 1 Miata (MX-5) I saw; first thought "they got a Lotus Elan right"
When I was growing up, my parents had a mint condition Ultravan for maybe 20 years. It was a 1971 - I believe - one of the last years - if not the last year. It didn't have a Corvair engine in it anymore. They switched to a V-8 with a drivetrain out of the Corvette. When my father sold it in his eighties, it was bought and shipped to France. The Corvair equipped models were the ones the collector's sought out the most. I always remember in the movie "My Girl," Jamie Lee Curtis lived in one outside the Funeral Home.
Leno’s car is a Firebird❗️🇺🇸
I had a 64 Monza and an 85 RX 7. Cool cars. Now I have an 87 911 Targa survivor. It’s never seen a raindrop or snowflake.
❤ Hagerty❤
Learned to drive in a '63 Monza 900 Convertible 2spd, back in the early eighties. Always loved the 'Vair!
Wish you would have talked more about the Mazda racecars! Pleas do one more visit.
Thank you Tom.❤
I love junkyards. The cars will tell their story if you look deep enough.
steve magnates youtube channel is great.
Thank You
This is a guy that likes things that are different. Air-cooled Corvairs and rotary Mazdas. I've owned a 64 Corvair Monza convertible and a Greenbrier Van. They're interesting cars.
🎉thanks 😊
Tom, the next time you get around the middle of the country you need to stop by Hastings Nebraska. There’s a place there that is not a junkyard, but it’s a resto lot and storage area for Corvair‘s of all types. My father-in-law has told me about it a couple of times when we’ve been up there visiting. I’ve never made the time to stop and get their stories, but based on what he said, they have plenty of stories, and plenty of Corvair’s. It’s interesting too, because I feel like every small farm town in the Midwest has barn finds.
Love the show and especially if it’s gor our beloved Corvairs. So Coras 65-66, were offered with the 140 (4 carb) engine with bigger valves etc and also the Turbo charged engine @180hp. The turbo charged engine did not use the same heads as the 140 hp engine. Spyders were built during the 62-64 model years and were 150hp turbo only engines. More Corvairs!!!!!
Love the moral at end end of the story, well said ❤
Thanks for another , Brother !!
There used to be a man In Linda Calif, that had a junkyard with nothing but Covairs. My father was buddies with him.
Had a Lakewood a couple years ago. Super fun and ez to work on
I looked for a Pontiac Sprint motor for YEARS ( pre Internet) could never find one. I searched in every backwater junkyard for 3 states lol. Most people I asked didnt even know what I was talking about. Seeing one out in the wild like that is RARE for sure.
If no one does anything with these cars then it remains just a junk yard!
Always Good Finds Tom..
Oh how I miss having a Corvair or two. This is an interesting yard! Hmm, that Lakewood wagon....
Man im glade to see you back Tom !! Great video !@
I just ❤ that 61 Corvair Lakewood wagon. Cool little piece of motoring history that would look great in my driveway. Greetings from sth Australia 🇦🇺 👍
I had a 60 Lakewood in 67 should have kept it along with another dozen I foolishly let go 😢
This was a cool one with interesting stories. So many interesting cars rotting in a field. When I saw a 6 cylinder OHC Pontiac Lemans in the early 70s, I didn't realize I was looking at a rare one. Or is that only the high performance model? I recognized the Ultra Van immediately, my father test drove one when he was looking for a Motorhome in the late 60s. I remember him saying the were underpowered, gutless. Later models got a 327 as I recall.
Always the best videos! Thanks Tom!
Awesome Mazda "collection" and Estes' mechanic story.
This is why you can't find anything anymore because quarters like this buy them all up throw them in the woods just To rot So there's no good you can't find any and then everyone asked stupid prices
That Corvair (race car) looks to be a Yenko Stinger (the C pillar shape is a dead giveaway)!
I'd love to have any of the old Corvairs. I've always wanted one. The wagon would be nice. The one with the 4 barrel carburetor would be just as good
100 first and second gen RX7’s just sitting there 🤯
Great episode.
@MattsOffRoadRecovery is a big Corvair guy!!
I hate seeing all those cars left to rot.
We need part two of that Singapore ep! PLEASE
They say that Ralph Nader killed the Corvair, but did he? It went from '60 to '69, the much more popular Falcon only went another half year. That's a pretty good run.
Actually Nader prolonged the Corvair .GM was about to cancel it then that damn book came out so they kept it going so it didnt look like they were cowering to him LOL
somewhere, Matt from Matt's Offroad Recovery is drooling over the Corvairs....
With all due respect, Ralph Nader did not "put an end" to the Corvair. He maligned the reputation of the car, but by no means ended its run. Keep in mind that his book, "Unsafe at Any Speed" came out in 1965, but Chevrolet continued to build Corvairs until 1969. Mustangs and pony cars, along with the desire for muscle, was the reason that the Corvair faded off into obscurity.
Hopefully Ralph gets to spend some time in jail soon. Totally not related to "Unsafe at Any Speed", but still amusing.
I'll offer one more reason that has nothing to do with muscle, manufacturing cost. The Corvair was completely different from anything else GM was doing, the opposite of a shared platform. It was an expensive experiment for them.
Also have to stick up for the early gens. By 1964 the swing axle handled great, the turbo motor was available, and the hottest cammed N/A motor they released was available. There would be no reason to target the facelifted cars for performance unless you're after a Stinger. Plus the earlys have the original, influential belt-line design that BMW and NSU, etc subsequently copied.
@@borntodieworldisafuck
In 1953 a GM rep was shown a 4 door VW (Carmen Ghia) made by Pagani in Italy.
That GM rep from Opal, saw a huge hole in GM's marketing.
The Secretary's car.
An almost 0 maintenance car.
Since VW had went with Ghia, GM was free to buy the Pagani test model.
Americanized the engine. Bigger, Louder, More Power! Remember they had all of Porsche's prewar patents.
And set about making every variant they could, for under $2K.
I think GM missed on one thing, The Turbo.
They had a Super Charger manufacturing company, that could have run a easy belt drive off the crank. Swing, and a miss! lol!
@@calebb9314On what charge?
@@borntodieworldisafuck I agree that the manufacturing cost was prohibitive. It's too bad that they abandoned such an innovative platform. Just think how it could have evolved.
Come to Connecticut!!!! It's been like 3 years I've been mentioning it!!
Je connaissais pas la corvair break! J’adore !me rappelle vraiment la VW 411 break dans la ligne profil arrière ! Impossible en France de stocker des épaves désormais !
I love junkyards....
Leno did a yenco corvair, shows like this are great
Thank you, always enjoy your episodes!
Wow stunning
Good video 👍🏻
What a waste. If I still had my "first ever race car" it would be sitting in my garage, workshop or in secure dry storage, maintained perfectly and ready to go racing at any time. It is so sad to see a bunch of cars that some people would pay a pretty penny for, just sitting there in the dirt and slowly turning back into dirt...
I had a 63 two door monza 900 loved it nice car no dents nice paint job inside had been completely restored from carpet to headliner. Me and my Dad tryed to get it to run right we put brand new carbs on it new distributor points plugs and wires it just would not right. My Dad got so mad he sold it last year for $500. Man i was so upset with him
Corvair bodys look great for pro mod builds back in Early 70s my dad and i work at speed shop the boss man build a yellow steel body covair chevy big block dual 4 barral stick 4 sp tube frame run 8,90 pro all motor old school pretty good for back then with all the electronic and everything used now day
The 65' and 66' Corvair Corsa came in two different engine configurations. 140hp carb version and the 180hp Turbo version.
One wonders how many of these could actually be saved.
Mazda guy here I have a 93 MX6 one owner almost nothing is oem all performance and Mazdaspeed parts on it , it's been sitting for 10 years now 😢 I would love to sale it for cheap and get it back on the road.
interesting how much that Corvair wagon looks like a VW Squareback. None the less - a cool restoration project in the waiting. Put a subaru motor in that thing and leave that patina.
Ive seen that place its between Charlotte and Salisbury NC you can see a lot of the rx7 cars from the hwy .
Why do Corvairs look like NSUs in larger size? That's literally the first thing I thought of when I saw one. It's very weird seeing them!
I love Corvairs!!! Corsa versions were only made in '65 and '66. The Carter carb is not the best choice and a center mount is hard to get running correctly. Ultravans were made in Kansas.
If i had the money. I would LOVE to own that old Lakewood.
i really cant stand people like this just have all these cars just rotting away smh i dont care how many excuses u have for letting them sit give em away then
That black Corsa has the telescoping column. Pretty expensive part, compatible with Corvettes.
I would love to have the Corvair Wagon
there a corvair junk yard out in pa.they have a lot corvairs there.
Growing up we had a corvair spider 6 cyl. Until the front end rotted. And a very old Freind of ours had a bunch of corvairs. (Everything except the truck and van) they all looked like they ran. I always thought they were cool and wonder what happened to them after he passed away
you totally missed it but that corsa has the very rare telescopic steering column. corvettes were the only other chevy of the time to have it and even in them they are somewhat uncommon.
I saw that too.
