I was fortunate to meet Frank Herbert at a SF convention and he took kindly to me and explained how he meditated for relaxation by hunting grouse behind his home with a handgun. It involves staying in a state of "relaxed readiness" and "watchful waiting" with your mind blank. When bird flushes you follow it with you eye and hand, and point and shoot. "Point and shoot," said the great man. "Point and shoot." He had me practice the motion with him until I got it.
Years later I read a paper on Herbert that explained as a teen he had been taken on as an apprentice by an a hunter from one of the coastal tribes of Native Americans in the Northwest. From the hunter he learned many things about the world and about his own mental and intuitive abilities. He kept up with the tribe through his life and some of his conservation work was oriented toward preserving and improving their coastal areas.
About his political philosophy, I think it comes out in his books. The Galaxy is ruled by authoritarian elites who vie with each other for power. _Real politik_ in today's terms. Frank's answer to the problems of life was pessimistic. He didn't believe that real freedom and individuality were possible for humans as we are now, even though most conservatives will say we are all free to choose whatever we want, responsible for our actions, blah, blah, blah.
When Paul becomes Emperor he becomes the least free being in the universe, but he fights to give the human race a new existence where we will be free to choose our future, never go extinct, and develop as we want, far into a limitless future.

@@rikburns1187 From what I gathered, that kind of hunting didn't rely on honing awareness, but dispersing it. Merging with one's surroundings, as I understood. And then, as Bruce Lee put it, "I don't hit - It hits, all by Itself."

One of the reasons Frank Herbert gave for writing Dune, most notable in the Today show interview, was make the point that charismatic leaders need to come with warning labels.
Something that both Jodorowsky and Lynch not only did not understand, but for some bizarre reason came to the opposite conclusion.
Jodorowsky didn't read Dune, he just thought an adaptation would be a good vehicle for weird visuals. Watch his documentary on the film for proof. As for Lynch, he had to fit the story in the running time of a feature length film and had to simplify it massively just to make it to the ending.
That doesn't figure into the first book, if you are referring to Paul. There is some foreshadowing.

@halfbakedmovies Of course, plus Paul himself has misgivings. But your question made me reconsider the ability to see the future. I think for Herbert, that's the central survival trait of the mind. But when you see farther, as Paul can, you see consequences too.
Unfortunately, it seems Dennis cut most of that out. Turns out his adaptation of Dune was just as flawed as Jodorowski and Lynch's.@@numbersix8919
I believe that Dune is the greatest Science Fiction story ever written. With that said, it was enlightening to look deeper into the life of the creator. Herbert was not a contridictionary man. His political beliefs are actually more honest than almost anyone today. Being politically conservatice while living with an open mind to express creativity and self reflection is a libertarian truth. in 2024 it seems that people like Herbert should be spolighted as how we can be indiviudals and not be a slave to "group think".
Ive collected hundreds of books since I was 9, but never liked science fiction. I tried Heinlein, Arthur Clarke etc, but I just didn't get it. I read everything else-horror, gothic, mysteries, fantasy. But then two years ago after watching "Quinn's Ideas" youtube videos about the DUNE series I was intrigued. I was utterly FLOORED by how awesome the Dune books are, and yet terribly disappointed that there was no 7th book, no conclusion. I've read a few of his son Brian's continuations/prequels but they're just OK, and feel like fanfiction.
Imagine how many GREAT BOOKS never see the light of day, despite so many tat-titles being published every damn year.
Good documentary but Dali wasn’t “an actor” and definitely wasn’t French. He’s only of the biggest artists/painters in history, Spanish.
He was a Libertarian and you absolutely can explore natural resources and be environmentally responsible.Only Extremists think otherwise and his writings are definitely a warning against all kinds of extremisms.
Superb as always! Didn't know much about Herbert, and wasn't expecting him to be featured here. A fascinating visionary for sure! May or may not get into the Dune series one day...

herbert's attitude about ecology didn't really align with the 'climate' hysteria in our modern times. his was more like: don't pollute and encourage the conditions that bring the type of ecology you want. no need for drastic 'solutions'.
we have the tech and knowledge to live in harmony with nature.

I actually have a 1965 Chilton 1st edition hard cover of Dune.

I have the the original serialization in _Analog Science Fiction_ -- it starts in the beautiful large format and ends in the current small format.
I knew Chilton's was great but I didn't know how great.
That's a treasure, bet it's worth a lot...amazing imo that over 20 publishers rejected a masterpiece like 'Dune'...but in some ways I'm not surprised b/c I worked for a larger publishing house (in the early 90s)....they don't like taking chances, if a book is different or groundbreaking they probably won't publish it....they mostly decide to publish books based on the sales history of 'similar' books in the genre....imo most publishing people are very uncreative thinkers, in a supposedly 'creative' field

Herbert built on Asimov's Foundation series. That should have been mentioned. Lucas ripped them both off of course.
Aside from the idea of a galactic empire, I don't see the similarities.
@@numbersix8919both are based, originally, on desert planets following teenage protagonists. The story of Anakin Skywalker and Paul Atreides are eerily similar. The "voice" was a clear predecessor to the force, etc. There are a lot of similarities, but this is normal for art. Nobody bitches about John Williams ripping off romantic and classical composers. Great art is often directly inspired by great art.

Sand crawlers, Sand People, a desert potentate who is a huge humanoid worm, Ben Kenobi's Jedi Voice (not the Force as you suggest). It would be obnoxious, but George Lucas freely acknowledges his debt to science fiction writers.
Calling anything by George Lucas, John Williams, or Thieven' Stealburg great art is a bit of a reach. George Lucas is a kind of well-meaning dork, Williams and Stealburg are supremely talented hacks.

@@rmeyer0122 OK, but _Dune_ was original. When I saw _Star Wars_ the first time, it was a groanfest (with all the _Dune_ stuff) as well as a big disappointment (because instead of science fiction it was so-called Space Opera).
I know for certain that art produces original ideas and entertainment uses those ideas to produce unique experiences. Hackery doesn't produce anything but a pain in my head.
Frank Herbert wrote a short story with a similar theme to the movie "Arrival". I haven't seen Arrival yet.. Can anybody give me the Herbert short story title? He wrote many shorts and novels..

I can understand Heretics and Chapterhouse being too weird, even God Emperor, but you have to read Messiah or else you won't really understand Paul as a character or the message of the series.
I just finished the entire series and they're fucking weird but very interesting. I'd stick with it.

Does anyone have a source for Yevgeny Zamyatin’s supposed influence on Frank Herbert? I’m a massive fan of both authors and had suspected that Frank was influenced by Zamyatin when I first began to read the Dune books. Just wondering if there is any real confirmation for this influence or if the writer of this video just suspected some sort of influence as I did.

The problem with novels (especially Sci-Fi) that explore deep human issues is that the intent of the author is often missed or misconstrued because so many lack the critical understanding to take things at beyond face value. Starship Troopers is another example of this. I think the just released Dune 2 movie does a decent job of showing the reader that the path that Paul is taking is not a good one, but it necessarily lacks the finesse of the books. It has to be literally spelled out in the interaction between Paul and Chani and her reaction to Paul's change in attitude. This is a source of some consternation for devoted fans of the novels.
The narrator manages to make even Tacoma sound cool.
This production reinforces the need for David Lynch to leave his definitive cut of Dune in place...I personally prefer his vision of Herbert's book(s)...DL has many production technologies available to him that did not exist when he originally directed the movie...His director's cut should have a place in the sun...DL has been told he has a free hand & I believe $ support to produce the film to his liking...I am sure he can also get expert assistance from many people in the industry who are his fans...let's hope he will reconsider his decision...lots of his fans would like to see his version of Dune....😊
His version was visually strange and engaging but lacked any of the real ideas that the series was about. It shallow and when lacking any of the higher ideals, resorted to mindless action like Paul's name being a LITERAL killing word. I love David Lynch but you can't salvage that movie, the only way for it to have worked would be to split it into multiple movies like Dennis did.

Around 20 mins in you mention Dune is set in alternate universe.
To be clear it's not separate like Star Wars is, but set in the far future and Earth is mentioned in the book. At 1 point in Dune Messiah Paul compares his rule to those of 20th century dictatorships on Earth.
Given that it is fictional and does not exist, alternate universe is accurate.

I don’t think it takes place in an alternate universe, as stated. I’m pretty sure I remember something about the Atreides being descended from Greeks in the Brian Herbert expanded universe, which is supposed to be based on Franks notes. I’ve thought Dune was us, 20k yrs from the present.
The Dune universe does not exists, hence alternate.
The setting is our universe 20,000yrs in the future. Hence, not an alternate universe. Did to kill a mockingbird take place in an alternate universe?
Dune, along with Stranger in a Strange Land and the Illustrated man were the three books that started my interests in novels instead of comics. All three were difficult to read and time consuming for me but I stuck with them. I was one of those who didn't think Dune would ever be turned into a movie because of it's complicated plot. I was thrilled when the 1984 version came out but I have to admit the current inconnation is probably the best movie I have ever seen. It's not for the simple sophomoric mindset of gamers who will get bored by it's attention to detail but it makes the experience for me a complete emulsion into the world of dune on the level of Lawrence of Arabia and that's saying something

I read Dune when I was a kid. Loved it. Not much of a fan of the movies.
A complicated man, to say the least.
The Harkins are Austrian model on the Hapsburg. The emperor is modeled on the French Louie family. Any trades is on the Dutch. Why Paul was England. Roughly you using European history.

IF you have read the book and like the book, David Lynch's _Dune_ is perfect. The SciFi Channel version is great too. The current films, Part 2 is coming out this week, they're beautiful but too woke and they change stuff. Herbert's female characters are already central in the books plus they have superhuman abilities, so I don't see the need for additional wokeness. Seriously, everyone is treated just fine in Frank Herbert's books. Conservatives want all the right things, just as progressives do -- they just want to use different methods! Also they make Duncan Idaho a bit too hypermasculine of beefcakey not to mention kind of militaristic -- it's a tired kind of treatment. Duncan Idaho is an ideal regular guy, who has lots of abilities. He's a great fighter, a fine musician and poet, and presumably a great lover too. What makes him special is what's on the inside, you know what I mean? He's a greathearted poet-warrior from the days of legend. The kind of guy that makes you glad to be a human being. He shouldn't look like a GQ cover.

Thankfully we’re almost at a stage in human development, except for a few throwbacks like yourself perhaps, where this will no longer be true.
Dune is definitely not woke . Chañis portrayal makes more sense and Dennis villenuve was very faithful to the story . As much as lord of the rings was anyway

I love the Dune universe for many reasons but one big reason is there is no corny and dopey characters like R2D2 or C-3PO
Thank goodness we seem to have moved beyond the idiotic notion that drugs doesn't do much else than screw up your mind and body and does not grant special abilities. As to Dune, it was an interesting read but probably overrated imho.
