- Some 5.6 million people rely on the subway each day to get around New York City. But what do you really know about something you spend so much time riding? We sat down with a group of MTA workers to ask them about the MTA's dirtiest secrets. The I-Team's Pei-Sze Cheng sat down with some conductors to ask the hard questions.

"They tap into the third rail and they're watching TV"
Best thing I've heard all day.
Might be an exaggeration but yea pretty funny
Homeless electricians bruh.
Yeah I call bullshit on that
I mean the third rail is good for electricity but it’s very risky
@@meichen3171 Lol, isn't the voltage 10x greater and in DC? No consumer electronics would accept that directly.
This obviously isn't all of the secrets in 2 minutes and 37 seconds. Where's the full length video?
Well, that could be documentary length. I believe this was just a news segment.
@@jdredman I was being more sarcastic in my approach. However, I know there are still more secrets that they probably hide from the public and anyone should know this. :)
Lincoln16 lmao it’s a news channel. They only report 2-3 minute stories
Lincoln16 ikr
I would like to see more too!
MTA if you’re gonna raise the prices, get better service and newer trains.
Shea Butta Gawd r u good? They can’t do that without raising prices. I don’t want prices raised either , but they’re low on money
Abstractt . . . For better, replace these outdated model trains with faster & more comfy seated trains. Also cut the number of bus stops especially outside of manhattan & Staten Island, since the buses have to go through traffic. It doesn’t cost much to cut down the amount of bus stops and it would help people health wise. People would get the extra exercise out of it. Leave 3 to 4 blocks between stops.
It's not as simple as that, the signals are over 100 years old. How do you replace them w/o interfering with the service, as well as making a budget when the politicians stick their noses and use the money on useless stuff.
Adam Yusef why would you cut bus stops in the outer boroughs? Trains don’t run everywhere like they do in Manhattan. In places like Queens and the Bronx busses are essential
The corrupt union is just going to squander it on more bloated salaries.
We constantly complain it’s so late but it’s us that get there last minute and hold the doors that delays the trip even more
Yes we def. Contribute to that lateness!
It’s called don’t hold the doors on the train
Don’t hold the freaking doors of the train 🚊
No always. A lot of it I learned how to do with old signals from the 30s! There's train traffic ahead but you're on a train that took 20 mins to arrive. What's ahead of you??
I've seen ppl hold the doors for ppl they don't even know that haven't even got past the turn style yet. Your holding up everyone already on the train and the next station ahead is getting more crowded and delaying all the trains behind. Small thing but makes a huge affect
They are not secrets, those are things people know already.
TRUE..everybody KNOWS..
The corner are my favorite place in the train but not anymore wacthing this video.
Jenova Izq please don’t that’s usually where homeless love to sit and do all types of things I’ve found blood and feces
@@youngzo5224 🤯🤯😱😱😳😳🤭 OMG thanks so much. I didn't know about that.
Brandon Humes wow
Ik
Lmao I used to sit in the corner EVERYDAY when I took the train to high school. I am not in the city that often anymore, but I will be sure to avoid those corner seats.
Wait how does the quality of the MTA keeps going down and the fare keeps going up..?
Zheng Yee de Blasio don't give a s*** he rides in a car, are you kidding these Subway cars are clean compared to back in the 1970s and 1980s graffiti all over. 1984 I got on an F train leaving 53rd and Lex. There was a homeless guy or bum whatever you want to call him asleep in three seats he had s*** all over the seat and people were so desperate to get out of Manhattan that they rode in the car.
The Transit Workers Union is very corrupt.
@@johnw8984 that was 40 years ago with the old trains, now we got new trains. Also, you still see many of those trains in some areas of Brooklyn and Bronx.
Don''t forget about the surplus.
Blame the fact that the MTA was in a crap load of Debt after 2000 for the new Trains on the Number lines and the L, and then the whole rebuild post 9/11 and the governor at the time thought Hey I’ll just take out loans and pay off you and then you owe the whole state cash, So The MTA makes a lot but most goes upstate cuz of Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Pataki shit choice then, that we have our shitshow now
0:17 “I had someone dead on my train”
yeah that was probably the joker
As a new york train Rider I speak for 98% of us we don't care if a person sick, throwing,or dieing just don't delay that train.
Diontay Libert the MTA has to care for all customers.
I know that there are unavoidable circumstances. All I'm saying is that if it's a case where it's customer negligence then for get about it.
@Richard Head Very interesting to know!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@diontaylibert768 Dying insn't negligence
I get offended when ppl say NY'ers are mean. Then I see stuff like this...
The third rail is 600v DC, id like to see someone try to tap into that. You cant power your tv with 600v dc anyway, most TVs are rated for 120v AC or 240v AC. Try to put 600v to your tv and it will blow up
I know harry, you and I are apparently the only ones who caught that. I've worked on trains my entire career, signalman and freight train conductor. ....
Harry It is possible to step that energy down and invert it.
These people are homeless not stupid!
There are lights in every tunnel. They are tapping those not the third rail.
@@whackamolechamp Guess what, tunnel lighting is either 600vdc ( old incandescent)or 220vac. (new florescent).
How’ve you ever heard of a power inverter?
At 0:18, I wonder if that was the incident that happened "years back" with that spanish dude (on the 1 train) that everybody thought was sleep but turns out he was dead. I remember hearing about it on the news.
Who’s a Local (and I mean born and raised - no imports)
Born, raised, lived, educated, spent my entire career in Manhattan. Moved because I got sick and tired of crowds, screeching street/subway noise, endless subway delays, endless trains suddenly going out of service due to so-called "mechanical malfunction", then zooms out of the station, high sales tax/rentals, what supermarkets?? However, still commuted to Manhattan, via NJT/PATH-almost like riding Amtrak without the sleeper/dining cars: MUCH cleaner, on time, few delays; no incidents.
@@lifeskater9899 subways are underground where air quality and people get sick automatically for not breathing properly.
I am but plan on leaving within a few years. It’s time. Tired of the crowds, the noise, the over pricing and all of the other crap I’ve tolerated my entire life.
I was a Nyer for a long time crime city the perps are all over, watch your back we are happy to be out of there, living in paradise now.
Fello bronxite, born and raised
I always sit on the middle but because it’s warmer. Every time those doors open cold air comes in. I have yet to see someone stealing a cellphone from someone sitting on the edges by the doors.
happy Gabby!!! Christmas is coming....just be patient, trust me you’ll see it!
The stolen cell phone thing happened to me, though it was on a bus in Austin TX
I've seen the aftermath of a cell stolen once (a woman screaming "he stole my phone") and almost stolen 3 times
happy Gabby!!! Flag me down next time u sitting in the middle hun, i’ll come bring u a cup of coffee to keep u warm.!
Little bed setup , tapping to the third rail..... lolol
I've never heard that one... if so that rumor would have spread already. And trains would be delayed left and right because you can just keep on operating pass those individuals.
blink1181 the rails are filled with electricity and people could die so it’s not a good thing to tap the rail
It's really not that dangerous. You just need common sense. People have been sneaking down there for decades
I’m a track worker in Manhattan. The mole people as we call them
Are very real
Wow lol that is a new one.
blink1181
Dude watching Netflix from the 3rd rail wow 🤣
that guy is lord voldemort
lol
As a New Yorker I can say that the service is a lot better then it was in the 90s...
The thing of it is if your sick as in very sick/ I'll then damn it stay the phuck home. Listen to your body, you phuck up lots of people being late for work, and in some cases getting fired.
this aged well
Too bad this video is only a few years old. You should have asked my dad 15-20 years ago. He was a NYCTA Conductor badge number #81000 . One of the best.
As a London Underground worker, I can relate to what they're saying!
He did great with Toronto. But I feel that NYC transit will tarnish his rep. The signal problems is an age old problem that can't be fixed easily.
Which is why they got this signal expert... So now it's someone else on the fire
Most of us new Yorkers know this already
Riding the train in NYC u see all type of foul stuff on the train one time I saw 50 rats running around on the late night.
It’s just a rat stop being such a baby
I found literal feces in a train before nobody was in that train car let alone train keep in the mind it wasn't near any of the terminal stations on the train route it was rush hour too you can probably guess why it was totally empty
Very informative. Thank you.
*a person jumps in front of the train
New Yorker- "But is there delays tho?"
Nyc mta is so corrupted it’s not hard to figured that out
Unknown User Not there fault People want to fare evade which cost them thousands and sometimes millions in revenue costs but we don’t talk about that
EXACTLY I TELL PEOPLE ALL THE TIME ITS THEIR FAULT WHY WE ARE LATE HOLDING DOORS AND ALL , FARE INVADING AND WONDERING WHY… IF YA DONT RESPECT MTA WHY SHOULD MTA RESPECT YOU…. WE TAKE YOU TO YOUR JOBS TO YOUR FAMILIES AND TO HOME … imma train operator now, and i cant believe how dumb founded passengers are thinking everything runs on their time , we got schedules too and i got Lunch breaks and down time i wanna attend to aswell
RIP Train Daddy Byford :(
The system is due for a major overhaul. A lot of that equipment is extremely old. Wires are probably old and full of asbestos so it's not like thy can just rip it out either. Takes time that requires sutting down service. We seen what happened with the L train. It just couldn't wait any longer but that has to happen to the whole system. I wouldn't be surprised if they still use old fuses and they blow all the time because we overload the electrical system.
After the overhaul , add more lazy and FATPIGS
How about lowering the fare if u wanna help the customers. Plus washing all trains
Yes. They must lower their fares while they are bleeding money left and right. Because that is how they will be able to sustain the service.
I don’t even pay the fair I always end up hopping the shits
Or waiting for some one to open the broken security exits
Hopping the turnstile and not paying the bus fare also gets factored into the raises so N.Y. riders have fare hoppers to thank as well for their loss.
This is a great guide for tourists. If you lived in New York long enough and take the NYC transit long enough you'll know all of these.
Thank God I don't have to take those trains to school and work anymore. Drove me nuts
Useful news
I always avoid the corner seats cause thats where the bums sleep too. Don't know why people fight for those seats.
Some are unaware
The view out the window in the corner is probably why
I like to stand so if something happens I can be ready.Standing keeps me in garud
Secerts... Really!?
Can't spell secrets...... Really?
@@tayedwards600 U got me! Haha
The mta is mad dirty New York is mad dirty in general but the tourists will disagree cuz the only place they been to was Manhattan
I wrote a proposal for a research paper on the MTA subway system and the problems with it, and my professor told me it was just my opinion, and that the trains are constantly running. He also told me that by writing SUBWAY, it meant I was going to write about buses too.. so basically my proposal was no good
Holy shizz that’s Toronto’s old TTC ceo good for him he moved on to better things!
WHY DON'T THEY REMOVE THE SICK PASSENGER OFF THE TRAIN AND MAKE THEM WAIT ON THE PLATFORM?!?! 🤔💯 The MTA needs me
Ji Akira The reason is MTA doesn’t want to take responsibility for the sick/injured passenger!
The delay is the MTA waiting for another city agency ie, NYPD, NYFD (for fires) or EMS to come and take charge of that passenger.
Potential lawsuits , not the paying customers, are paramount in the minds that run MTA day to day operations!
People be sick knowing they sick and still ride the train
Sometimes strokes and heart attacks give no warning.
U have an executive from another country running NYC transit. What's wrong with promoting one of those drivers to executive positions. They know more than he will ever know
Good worker does not mean good manager
@@cole1
True, but out of 100 u can't tell me there's not 1.
Plus, they know a lot of things culturally about nyc that he wouldn't have a clue about
@Richard Head
Black people did excellent work when they worked for free. But, when it got time to pay them, they weren't good enough.
What I'm saying is we come up with reasons to do what we want, when we want.
@@cole1 Actually, a good worker can make a good manager, especially when they know from experience, the ins and outs of the system. Unlike an outsider, someone who has been on the inside can relate to what's going on!
Let's do a report with MTA bus operators
It's about the same in Chicago. But I feel you new yorkers, let's keep it moving
Awesome!
I'm just seeing this! It's 3 yrs old! Hey, 4NBC, loads of retired MTA workers to get stories from, starting with me(30 yrs B-division C/R and union rep 1998- 2000.) We'll tell you what's what.
aint no one tapping in to the third rail that shits 600 volts come on my dude
This is No Secret this been going on for the very long long long time it never going to change no matter who you put up in charge
pochy099 even do the system it’s been going through this, at least we have a decent train system 24/7
There’s always LIRR PATH or metro north just to help you out 🙂
1:31 Is the old City hall subway
The metro was so antiquated when I visited in 2016 compared to London and in Germany
That was no secret ,thats everday life with dealing with nyc subway if you wanna talk about something ,talk about the expensive price riding the subway which is late, delayed, stuck, and poor customer service, thats something to talk about
I left n y 4 years ago how much is the monthly card these days
nobber d robber $121
You should never cross subway tracks because they come before you know it 🗽🚊🙂
1:33 what does that mean: living underground BETWEEN stations?
It is soooo true. I was thrown at the door a lot when I was a child
😂😂😂 My Condolences
Baby... I moved from NYC to NJ back in 2018 and trust me... I don't miss NONE of this shit...
USPS was the worst managed government agency until MTA came around
I've seen people blocking the doors not letting passengers off the train and causing them to miss their stop (even though the passengers were saying excuse me). One guy actually said "NO YOU CAN'T GET OFF". Idiots!!!
Richard Head What?
Why does the last guy has binoculars on his office?😂
How are people tapping into 600 volts DC and watching TV that's BS
As a former motorman this all true glad I able to leave there more tales of the subways still not told - don’t worry NYCT they will be
It is ridiculous how people throw their children and strollers into the path of the closing doors. I live near Boston and ride the train very often. you’d be surprised at how often adults are willing to throw children into closing doors to stop a train even though the next train is only a few minutes out.
Come on!! I thought it was something else. NYC train is a freaking circus 🎪
start with the massive corruption. we pay more per ride in taxes than any other city and have the worst service. explain that.
lousyacrobat Most other cities Pay more around the world and the US pays less cuz there isn’t that much cost. LA only has two Subway lines and a ton of Light rail, so they are able to pay less. We pay a lot cuz we have a lot of shit to maintain, most of it is old af
The reason why the fares keep going up is because the TA workers pay keeps going up,thanks to their stupid union. They have thousands of employees and still can't operate the system correctly.
Secrets that We all know!! 😂
how many times are they late until they are very early? oh hey look the 11;15 is here at 11;07!! :D no jim that was the 1045 train..
That lady like I’m not saying shit 😭😭😭😭
I’ve ridden the subway New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Boston’s trains were the worst, and D.C.’s Metro trains were by far the best. New York’s trains was closer to Boston’s trains. I think that people in Boston and New York took far less care of their trains.
OwlsShadow nope we just use the hell out of our trains, (NYC) point is Washington has less people that’s why,
Well Whenever Its Delayed Sometime it Takes Forever or Sometimes the Conductor doesn't Announce if there's a Sick Passenger
that brit at the end sounds like he's never rode the train a day in his life.
To his credit, Andy Byford did start out as a an operator in the London Underground
You know whats the next biggest problem? The fucking speakers in the train. They are barely audible when the conductors say anything
Thanks for your giving people your name:
Chief executive: Andy Byford
Headquarters: 2 Broadway, New York, NY 10004 US
You can add security cameras in the subway cars
*the best place I like to sit on the train is in between the cars*
Took a few test to get a job with MTA never get a call always get a 90 + on each test
@HOLYBANANAS1968 nah am brown.
Yore the wrong color
I’m white and I started as a cleaner then took the test for Motorman...became a mm April of 89.
MTA has hundreds of overweight African Americans on the verge of heart attacks. Don't worry they'll call you.
^^^ LMAO ^^^ That is so true.
So now that ive learned this about corner seats im screwed. Sometimes not knowing is better.
Vanessa Yates i NEVER sit on the station seats! But the subways in nyc are the worse i visited london and paris no homeless in sight
they throw their kids in the door.. chill... he did not wanna say that straight faced...
I actually don’t sit at the corners of subway cars, that’s explain why 0:32 and 0:39
🤦🏻♀️ I always do smh
I always do too lol
I always do. It takes longer for someone to sit next to me.
sis we been knew
I’m one of the many who has committed numerous felonies on New York subways
Julian Collot feel better about delaying thousands of people?
Abstractt I wasn’t aware that drinking heavily in subway stations delays people
I once used a bottle of Gatorade on an F train
I saw a BJ competition in the back of a ny bus when the schools let out ,betting on which competitor was first to finish.
Another secret: The subway poles aren't cleaned.
What about the 6 loop?
What about Chambers Street by the (J), (M) & (Z)?
Woe! People can be so heartless, with no compassion when just commuting to work and home.
When you're in NYC and you try to ask somebody a question most of the time some fathead will ignore you like they totally saw you they just don't want to talk to you even though they understand what you're saying
@@jaydottt_transitfanner I am a native New Yorker.. People are always in a hurry to get to somewhere and don't want to be interrupted, even for a simple question. So the facial expression they easily give is this... 🤨 or even a 🧐 and including.. 😠
Well they aren’t secret anymore
On some occasions, MTA=Messy Train Authority.
Huh?
What=
Andy Byford knows what's up
I also have a secret about the MTA headquarters downtown. There are a lot of high paid employees that don’t do anything. I witnessed their actions while temping there. This is one of the reasons why they want to raise the fare.
That joke is really getting too old.
Oh really, are you an mta employee assh*le.
@@truthtold9084 Are you an MTA employee assh*le?
Believe me, conductors don’t know the half of it
MTA workers that work in the booth have a simple job but take it for granted, they treat their customers poorly and they're extremely rude. Simply asking for help means getting screamed at, and all they do is just sit there, but not all, but many just have this behavior that they don't want to be bothered at all.
I am discouraged to ask for assistance by MTA workers that work in the booth. They're supposed to serve the public, yet they lack proper etiquette and good customer service. Typical of the public sector.
Huh?
Wow so many secrets
I live in California and seen nasty shit like used needles, used condoms, hella homeless people, and lots of actually shit and piss on the walls. While visiting family in NYC I’ve never see so much garbage in one area and so many rats. On one of the stations a rat was cut in half by the train and the station smelled like the entire place was a public bathroom.
They tap into the 3rd rail and watch TV in the tunnel, I worked there 32 years. Cant be done...pure BS
Bruh the new chief of the mta used to be the ceo of the ttc in Toronto
1:54 Is that Unbox Therapy?
New York and north Cali have so much in common but not rats we somehow got a deer and seagull problem
Imagine being homeless living in a train station and your top priority is watching tv.
The entire rail system in NYC and greater NY (Metro North & LIRR) needs an extreme makeover. Without it, the public transport system in NY will rot.
It costs less than the NYC Subway to go to upstate New York on the Metro North 😂
I know the NYC Subway doesn't go upstate I'm just saying like on the Metro North to get from a station in the Bronx to Grand Central terminal is like 75 cents oh my gosh that is so cheap
My team?is this guy writing d check ?
The same thing happens in Melbourne Australia lololol
AS A TRAIN OPERATOR NOW, ITS ALL THE PASSENGERS FAULT WHY SHIT HAPPENS THEN THEY BLAME MTA 😂 ONLY THING THAT AINT THEY FAULT IS WHEN A TRACK CIRCUIT GOES THATS ABOUT IT
They should build an automatic skytrain like in Vancouver
That's right, and those of us who are employed by NYC Transit can just go f**k ourselves, right?
