'Insane' Straight Pipe Car Mod Mimics Gunfire, Could Cause Panic | NBC New York I-Team

One of the latest trends in custom car modifications goes way beyond style -and some say it could cause a dangerous panic among pedestrians.
The modification usually involves removing portions of a car’s exhaust system and “tuning” the computer that regulates a car’s fuel combustion to produce loud pops and flashes that fire like gunshots out of the vehicle’s tailpipe. On social media sites like Instagram, the I-Team found dozens of videos demonstrating straight pipe exhaust systems that have been altered using techniques called “straight piping” and “two-step” modifications.
Pedestrians said they could imagine a dangerous mass panic if one of the customized cars rolled past a crowded street.

If you are gonna do a story on this actually do your damned research and stop giving people false information. Most of the clips of the cars you see are not even in New York. Furthermore a straight pipe is not the reason for the backfire, anti-lag systems are used to reduce turbo lag and 2-step systems are used for drag racing so cars can launch better. It is not our fault that we happen to enjoy the sound these systems make and if you think they are obnoxious then that is your opinion and we could care less about it.

It’s pretty difficult for most cars to mimic gunshots. Most of those cars had modified inline 6 engines with straight pipe exhaust. This criteria alone eliminates 80% of the average vehicle. There’s only a handful of cars who are modified enough to make gunshot equivalent noises.
Not really a tune will do it, u dont need a i6 to make it sound like gunshots

This isn't an exhaust mod. It's an engine mod. Usually two-step, antilag, or an ECU tune made to make big bangs.
