      In a bit, I had a summerhouse that now isn't happening i don't think, the price of wood has pushed the price too high, i tried moving on to a different job but that also might be delayed cos of price, I've been doing some work but nothing worth filming, ... I'll be back 😎👍

    If I had been drinking tea when you said "easiest way" (to cut along your scribes edge) I would have spat it out. To me, that cut, just inside a pencil mark of a curved line - THAT is skill.
    Also how quickly and neatly you got the battens fixed in.
    Continuing to find it interesting to see how you fit and fettle these builds.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  4 роки тому

      Thanks Andrew 👍 I guess some of it is time served, 36yrs i should be able to cut along a line 😂😂 but part of it is having a sharp saw & holding it right with your finger pointing down the blade as i showed on the pergola build, & don't force the saw, that's why you need a sharp one, correct any deviance off line immediately, trying to get back online after a few saw cuts can be hard & will effect the next few inches, sometimes the width of the blades distance before you can get back on track if that makes sense. the battens on the wall go on back wall first so once the side ones go on & you look in from the front you don't see any gap or at least you don't see it so much, it's called line of sight 😉👍

    GID, just discovered your channel, and wanted to say thanks for taking the time to share your experience; really enjoying watching your processes and learning a lot from your explanations. Thanks 👍

      Hi, I'm glad you learnt from my vids, that's my intention in sharing my experience, there's different ways of doing things but I've been doing this a long time & have learnt a lot, putting it on film isn't easy but i try.
      The more you witness the more you learn & then you can choose which option is best for you which is what I've done over the yrs.
      Thankyou. 👍

    Nice job Gid, I have the same older property. An old Victorian terrace. Enjoyed and learnt from your scribing techniques. Many thanks for taking time to show.
    Cheers Gid.

      Thanks that's good to here,
      bits of stuff done this weekend, covered a floor in plywood for a new carpet yesterday, temp fitted the sink in this house today because the hob isn't coming until Fri so no worktops fitted yet, and took measurements for the tall doors now that the fridge & oven are stood in place, so this week I'm going to make those doors, they're the same as these just a little bigger so we'll see what i film of that, then worktops next wk.
      vmts ? - Valveless Melt Transfer System? 😂

    Hey Gid. I have referenced this video 2 or 3 times now when drawing out designs for built-ins, and have had some very successful scribed pieces due to your excellent tutorials, especially the tops. I have a question for you. I have only ever made built-in units as a full cupboard underneath with sides and a back. What made you decide to make this one as a face frame unit with support battens for the top and shelves? Is it a cost thing? Ive seen wardrobes done this way as well but you always seem to do them the way i do them as a fully enclosed unit.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  5 років тому

      Hi, 👍 I'm glad they're helpful.
      It's partly a cost thing, it's also slightly traditional & logical, why make three sides when you already have three sides, I find it fairly easy to just put just a frame in, if i put a box/unit in I'd have to try cover the gap at the end where the firebreast is if the unit sticks out, similar to what i have to do on wardrobes, & the amount of space would be lost, thickness of the carcass + the skirting, in a lot of these houses removing the skirting is a no no & more trouble than it's worth.
      I always discuss choices of design & materials with my customer, do they want me to build a unit or are they fine with using the alcove as the 3 sides, i do suggest this way as my preferred choice & it's cheaper, the next choice is do i cut the carpet back & put a base inside & would they like a mid level shelf etc...

    Where are you based in the UK? and how much do you charge for something similar?

  • @-_AjB_-
    @-_AjB_- 6 років тому +2

    Not so much a question. I'm always comparing myself to other carpenters I suppose, and always wondering if I should be charging more.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  6 років тому

      Ah yes, one of the hardest questions, The quote seems quite expensive but i need to earn more, would i still get the work if i made the price a bit higher, ?
      😂 can't answer that, i didn't used to charge enough, The added time shopping for materials, added expenses, visiting potential jobs, & time drawing or working out quotes, .
      Trial and error, I've been a joiner 34yrs, self-employed 18yrs, I still haven't worked that out, 😆

    Such a shame they didn't have soft close hinges. That clonk when they shut isn't nice.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  3 роки тому

      Yep agreed but as always price might have come into it, they don't cost much more, i always give all the options to the clients & would've recommended them but i build as asked, can't remember why they're not soft, they can be changed later 🤷‍♂️🤔👍😁

    Great series of videos. These alcoves are really popular at the minute. The Finish and fit is second to none, I love the attention to detail. How much should someone expect to pay for something like this?

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  6 років тому

      Thanks paddy, yep I've built quite a few to a point where I don't put pics on Facebook because they look like the ones before,
      Sorry not going to give you £s numbers but a couple of wks work inc spraying & fitting, a couple-ish of £100 for materials & about £80-£120-ish for spray paint (primer,thinners,catalyst & top coat)
