VIDEO INTRODUCTION: We all know China as one of the most powerful countries in the world, and it is so so hard to believe that a country that is known today as the second largest economy in the world with a 12 Trillion dollar GDP, just 45 years back, the same country was crippling with a 60% poverty rate!! While one side, today we see china as a futuristic solar and electric pioneer, the same country in the 1970s, was so backward that Chinese knew nothing but farming and that too during the peak of industrialisation! and lastly, While one side we see this glamorous Sky line of shanghai, its so hard to visualise that country had such a bad economy that millions of people died due to starvation!!
So the question is, what exactly happened from 1978-2018 that China went being an impoverished country to becoming a global super power?

At the rate our currency keeps depreciating, India might never catch up with China. Meanwhile China's currency keeps appreciating.
Also this video doesnt talk about the risks of China's investments.
      For example,
Betting big on Solar and EV back in 2005/2007 could have also turned into a disaster. At that time Middle East and Russia were pumping more oil than ever & many were predicting that oil would only get cheaper.
If Europe and US had not tightened the carbon emission regulations then we may have never seen solar and EVs become this popular.
Companies only care about profit, even today big banks such JP Morgan and GoldmanSachs invest 10 times more on Fossil fuels compared to renewable.

      You have diversity
      And democracy
This is the most complex thing which any nation can have. Democracy may work for less diversified countries.

    I'm neither Chinese nor Indian.
But I'm extremely happy to see that you are looking at the Chinese experiment with an open eye to learn from.
China sets a clear example that if a country and its leadership have their minds set on getting out of poverty and working to improve their people's lives they will succeed. They have also be vigilant not to let the colonial powers interfere in their internal affairs and cause division and chaos.
The west is currently flirting with India to counter China, while in reality they despise both and they have a bloody history dealing with both. They look at China & India with despise and superiority. But if China & India show some real potential then they will consider them a threat and start smearing them with false accusations to make them look evil.
I hope India will succeed and bring more stabilization to this world as much as China will do.
When the colonial powers find their real match they will start to behave in a civil way, not because they want to, but because they have to.

Food was not there for anyone. If they want to eat meats they used to wait for months. And thats how they felt ok with any meat. Today in her sixties she is retired and is doing world tour. Currently she is in europe. I see her having fun. But she used to tell us that these are effort of one full generation. The generation full of misery. Now they are happy ❤❤❤

I do not think it is possible for such rapid economic development in a democracy. There are just too many hurdles and too many people to agree with for anything. I truly believe if China was democratic they wouldn't even be close to what we see them today

    • @piechen4193
      @piechen4193 5 місяців тому +9

The thing is China has its own democratic system (not that it's perfect and not facing any challenges), and different from the universal suffrage system the Western world founded over 300 years ago, China's political system was founded to ensure that everyone's welfare should be tended to, rather than the benefit the party represents.
If you really look into the system, you will be awed by the effort the Chinese have put into building such a sophisticated system that pursues both democracy and the nation's development in the long term. The balance is hard to achieve, and they also went a long way to prevent corruption caused by concentrated power.
But after all, the first priority for less developed countries is always stability and economic development. In China, many people just feel sad for India because they wasted all their efforts in arguing with each other rather than being united and making actual progress, and many believe it's a trap the Western world has led India into to keep the country in poverty so it can provide cheap labor for the first world to squander and make profits, and it also prolongs the progress of India becoming a regional superpower, thus one less imminent competitor to threaten their throne.
I wish for the 1.4 billion people in India will have a better future, but the way of resuscitation is always paved with much risk and hardship, hope the Indians find the right way towards it.

More and more people are seeing through the true nature of Western democratic systems, which are not truly democratic at all. With just a few political parties competing against each other, and a change in leadership every few years, there's no continuity in policies, and no one is held accountable for failures. How can a country develop successfully under such conditions?

I am a Chinese, from my personal point of view there are too many obstacles to India's development.
1, the tax rate is not uniform among the states within India.
2, a series of conflicts derived from religious conflicts in India.
3、Improper talent training system, such as universal basic education, vocational training system.
4、Improper infrastructure, such as: water, electricity, transportation and logistics, these are the main components of the business environment.
5, Caste system, although the caste system has been abolished, but the caste system still exists in the poor areas of India.
6, India's current laws are still not out of the British colonial period refers to the formulation of the legal vein.
7, spare parts supply system is not perfect, which is to reduce the cost of manpower, time and resources for investors.
8, the security environment, I remember often see the news, the Chinese factories invested in India were smashed.
9, the instability and inconsistency of government policies, if the government often modify the policies related to foreign investment, then it is also risky for investors. Inconsistency refers to the inconsistency of policies among states within India, which can cause great problems for investors.
This is just my personal idea, not the general idea of Chinese people.

It's amazing how China which was sliced into many parts under the imperialism of Germany, France, England, USA and Japan imperialist were treated like slaves got their independence and rise silently.
People don't expect such rapid growth and development. But look at China how they've successfully launched space stations independently without the help of any so-called developed countries and USA. Look at the trade, commercial and economic partnerships around the world from Asia and, Africa to South America. Look at the technology they've built for infrastructure and 5g network which by the way the USA doesn't have yet.

Very well research talk on the topic especially when you mentioned the special economic zone which is hardly mentioned by most other talks. Even many talks on the 'Economics of China' left that very important chapter of China's growth starting from the special economic zone out of their talks. People talked about how China's high speed rail lost money which to them is kinda stupid. But we now know how far the Chinese looked ahead. This is the scary part of China, they planned very far ahead, incurring initial losses but talking the whole world subsequently. China's high speed rail had speed up China's growth further which cannot be accounted for by the losses that they incurred on just the rail itself while the Chinese enjoyed a stable and high speed travelling in comfort which also speed up the development. China's high speed rail is some of the best in the world with the expertise they gain after they had built such a massive high-speed rail infrastructure.

I am a Chinese person born in 1980. I have witnessed China’s rapid development over the past forty years. Let me share my thoughts. China was a poor country that needed to develop. The government had to develop long-term plans and execute them steadfastly. Regarding work and overtime, we are not on the same platform as developed Western countries. To reduce the gap, the only solution is diligent work. My mother is 70 years old and she is still working hard. Although I want her to stop, the work ethic runs through her veins, to create wealth. I hope that the Chinese and Indian people can become friendly nations and create an Asian century.

Nice video. Although the video mentioned a lot that contribute to the rapid development like open door policy and futuristic vision, I will add 3 even more fundamental factors.
    1) Industrialization. China was literally an agricultural society after WW2. Mao realized that industrialization is the only way that can make the country strong. They fought with America in Korea, and in return, they got a lot of heavy industry from the USSR. That gives China a good preparation of fast development.
    2) Education. After WW2, the illiteracy was estimated to more than 80%. Reducing illiteracy was one of the major goal for CPC. In 2000, this number reduced to 7%. Now it is 3%. A lot of well educated people is key to the country development.
    3) One party governance. No endless debate, instead a lot of long term planning. High speed rail network, road and belt initiative, as well as the preparation of EV industry, none of them are possible if the leader needs to focus on the election in 4 years.

Chinas system is far more advanced: elect+select, we are a bottom-up society, If you have the ability, you could reach the position of the President of China through a series of selections, before being elected as the President of China, Xi Jinping served as the top leader in many provinces and cities, overseeing a population of over 100 million people. Let me tell you that the first thing India needs is not Deng Xiaoping, but Mao Zedong, who you have always regarded as a murderer. If India does not have a leader like Mao Zedong to carry out a thorough land revolution and cultural revolution, India will not be able to change. If you cannot learn to respect Mao Zedong, you will never be able to understand why China began to develop rapidly after 1978. Deng Xiaoping's economic theory was based on the land revolution and cultural revolution in Mao Zedong's era. It's useless to give you 100 Deng Xiaopings if India doesn't solve its own land and culture problems.

You're a good example that India also paid efforts to educate people. One thing I'd like to mention, as a Chinese living in Shanghai, is that one country can't develop to a big power (not to mention superpower) in the western system if this country is over 200 million people. All the large developing countries, like India, Indonesia, Brazil, should build up sort of independent system to get out of the control of western system. There's a big difference between China and India. The Chinese welcome foreign investment. They will be satisfied if they can get 5% of the profit and let the foreign companies to get the lion's share. In Indian, it's totally different: The Indian's phylosophy is that I must earn 100%. If you earn as little as 5% I will beocme sleepless. Recent case of India freezing $670M of Xiaomi's bank assets is just an example. After many years of negative profit, Xiaomin India finally started to get profit. This must have upset many Indian people. So the big blow to Xiaomi is not a surprise.

Thank you for this very comprehensive analysis. I am saying this not just because you project a positive light on China, but most importantly, you are pointing out the fact many China critics try to avoid knowing. Invariably they would suggest it was because the Chines government controls everything, and of course, slave labour.
China's lesson is something India could use. However, India being the largest democracy in the world also suffers because of it. Why? Too many people pulling in many directions, and political expediency. China's political system is constantly a talking point of many China critics. No political freedom. Too much government control. Political oppression, etc. The list is long.
But what these critics don't realize is that it is exactly because of the centralized control that makes China what it is today. It provided stability, certainty, consistency, and most importantly, long term vision. Yes, vision. The example of solar panels and cobalt mining are but some of them China had set their long term goals. It is no co-incident that those goals are now bearing fruits.
But being visionary is one thing, we mustn't forget the ancient history of China. Chinese culture is long, just like the Indian culture. China had endured many ups and downs, but it always recovers. But why? Because of its cultural roots. Chinese people, as I know better than many, are resilient. We always recover and don't run off and hide and complain in times of adversities.
Am I rating my own people too highly? Maybe. But I know for a fact that Chinese rate education as the most important of all, even more important than food and water. My parents told me that "...Education stays with me wherever I go." Besides education, Chinese people rates hard work and loyalty as the next on top of list. Of course respect to elders.
One of the tiny moment many people missed during the current visit to Saudi Arabia is how respectful President Xi treated King Salman. He knew the king has difficulty to standup after the signing of the documents. Xi took the trouble to get up, personally delivered it to the king. This shows he lowers himself in front of the king, and he cares for the king's advanced age. That is something America and the west could never grasp.
China is more than just trades. It is about relationship, long term enduring relationship, not the kind..."what can you do for me" kind. The 50 year contract show China and Saudi Arabia trust each other long before the current generation die.
I have been thinking what are the major distinctions between China and America. I formed the opinion that America, while being a superpower in many ways, is but a "phenomenon". America doesn't have the kind of culture like India, China, the Middle East, Jewish, Europe and Russia, and of course the many ancient natives. America is built on a potpourri of cultures. Could and would America outlast China, India and others? Time will tell.

Sadly for me, I got beaten by a couple of very clever Indian school mates time and again. But they totally deserved the honour because not only they are intelligent, they work hard at it as well. One of the shared quality between Indian people and the Chinese people are, as I said earlier, their appreciation for education, and not afraid of hard work.
I believe that as time progresses, India and China would understand it is better to get along, than to fight. I say this because China had much to learn from India in ancient times. As for the western media and western governments, it is in their nature to divide and conquer. That is how they get to be where they are right now. Fortunately, people are gradually waking up to this, and adjust accordingly. The new affirmed relationship between Saudi Arabia and China's is proof of my assertion.

And India is actively pursuing Green Hydrogen on a mission mode.

Electrolysis can be done by giving power supply.
Power generated from fossil fuels isn't Green Hydrogen.
Green Hydrogen production cost will be way less than Grey or Blue Hydrogen because Fossil Fuels are getting expensive day by day we have to agree that one.
At the same time Cost of Renewable Energy power generation cost is touching new lows every year
In 2022 Cost to generate per KWH power from coal was $110 it was $108 in 2010
Whereas from Wind it was around $25 in 2022 in 2010 it was $200
Solar in 2010 per KWH power generation cost was $350 in 2019 it was $40 in 2022 it's around $11

Good analysis but not comprehensive enough. The answer is that before Deng open up policy, China is already an industrial country. China was able to manufacturing almost all weapons before open up, this means China’s heavy industry is already powerful back then. China only not strong enough in light industries. Just when u compare NK with some African countries, although the GDP of NK is low, they are able manufacturing many stuff not like some other poor countries. So once they have a chance, they can become much richer and much faster than others, just like China.
Simply speaking, you can’t simply measure a country’s power by its GDP only, the reason why China can become much richer is because China was actually already a powerful country before open up. Its potential is already there, China just need a chance. Same for NK, give them a chance, they can be much richer very quick.

    1. We do not have a caste system, and we have been able to achieve class mobility by selecting the best people by means of imperial examinations since Sui & Tang Dynasties(more than 1000 years ago). This has led the people to place great value on education.
    2. Over 2000 years ago China unified its writing, including what is now known as Mandarin, making it possible to live and communicate culturally across regions without barriers. That will be very important for talent mobility.
    3. Since 1979, China has made great efforts to develop education and improve the intellectual and cultural quality of the whole population, which has also provided enough talents for the later development.
    4. Then, China has joined the WTO and seized the opportunity in the process of global economic integration.
    5. China guarantees the interests of foreign companies in China, making them willing to invest in the country. If we look at the foreign companies in India, it is difficult to guarantee a fair share of benefits. The most recent thing that happened, both in Europe and in the United States, was the huge fine imposed on Xiaomi mobile phones.
    6. Super execution power. Except for the years 1966 to 1976, China's overall society operated relatively efficiently. It goes without saying that videos of past road construction in China, just look at the speed at which Tesla is building its factory in Shanghai.
    7. Finally, a centralised administration, although lacking in democracy to a certain extent, does manage to be efficient. The military and economy are hard power, and that is the priority. My view is that it takes a process to develop well first, so that everyone can live well, and then change steply.

Separate Mao Zedong from Deng Xiaoping reflects the editor's lack of deep understanding of contemporary Chinese history. China during the Mao era was in a period of total blockade by the West. You can never expect the Chinese to potentially have the similar opportunities they have in the 1980s.The Mao era and Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening up complement each other. During the Mao Zedong period, it was inevitable to deal with the Western blockade and the hostility of the Soviet Union at the same time. But at that time, the achievements of the Mao period were enormous: on the one hand, The Two bombs and One satellite Scheme laid the military foundation; second, the successful introduction of 156 projects from the Soviet Union laid the foundation for China's heavy industry, laying a solid foundation for the follow-up of China's military, manufacturing, science and technology and other fields. The success of reform and opening up is largely due to the industrial foundation and national defense achievements of the Mao era.

When there is an underdeveloped country with 6 babies per woman then there are two models of development:
    1) Confucion Model: In this the country pushes coercive measures of population control and achieves a fertility rate under 2 in 15 years. It also implements development oriented dictatorship and achieves GDP growth rate of 10 to 12 % and becomes a Newly Industrialized Country in 30 years. However, prosperity and globalization makes people aware of their rights and they protest and this leads to democracy. The country then develops within 5 decades. Taiwan and South Korea followed this path. China also is going along this path however they need democracy to make a transition from NIC to developed country.
    2) Dharmic Model: Here the country implements family planning and democracy. With family planning the fertility rate falls below 2 within 35 years. Democracy creates a gdp growth rate of 6 to 8% and the country becomes Newly Industrialized within 5 decades. Then within 8 decades they can become developed nations.
India, Bangladesh, Mongolia and Indonesia have followed this path and they can become developed countries in 2040s.
Thailand is an interesting case when they had military dictators they pursued 1 and when they had democracy they pursued 2.

Some of China's success dates back to Mao's policies, though not necessarily in a good way. One of the results of the Chinese Revolution was the total liquidation of the landed class. Because of this, most of the people capable of corrupting the system to benefit themselves and their families personally during the Mao years were either killed, exiled, or politically emasculated. I like to say that Mao burned down the forest so that a new generation of seedlings could grow.
Deng's policies of liberalization certainly were key to bringing in international economic stimulation, but there was always a balance maintained between free market and state-owned industry, in part to make sure that no class of tycoons would ever become powerful enough to control the political narrative. It was during Deng's time that embezzlers and other economic corruptors were routinely executed.
The party maintains its grip on power, and its control of the media narrative means that the government can make decisions without having to compromise with the rich. Taxes can be effectively collected and resources properly targeted to meet what the government thinks are the true needs of the country and the people. And access to government power is predicated on performance from small jurisdictions to jurisdictions of ever increasing size if and only if ambitious targets are met and exceeded. Politicians do not have to stand for election and effective governors are far less likely to be dethroned through media smear jobs.
China does have problems, but China's determination, structure, and timing have all been extremely fortuitous. I wish India the best of luck going forward towards their own superpower station, but I don't think India has the proper ingredients to do it like China did, and in some ways that's a good thing. I don't know how likely China's model was to work as it did, but I think India's road is going to be much slower, assuming that it arrives at all.

India and all third-world nations would do well to learn from China. Historically, a country can become modernized by the slow capitalist model, or the fast socialist model. In the traditional capitalist track, the STATE accumulates power and wealth over time (300 years) through ownership of resources (oil) or invention (railroads). Roads, bridges, ports are built as needed. Winning wars accelerate this process. Workers are lifted out of poverty through individual effort and the 'trickle-down theory". In the modern socialist model, the needs of the nation are already known, like communications, transportation, health, housing, education and so forth. What is needed is SCALE to meet the needs of a large population. Scalability is achieved by empowering a small group
