One Finnish race has the rule that if somebody offers 200eur (might be more now) for your car, you have to sell it. This enforces that nobody will use too expensive cars for it, as you might not come back with it.
You can get a car going (with something old and slow) for $5-7k once you add all the safety stuff. Personal gear will run another $1k or so, but there are rental companies under $500 a weekend.

My 15 year old son races stock cars on our local dirt tracks yet we have somewhere around half that in our car/equipment and he typically finished top 5 by the end of the season. Of course we do have the advantage that I've been into the racing scene for over 2 decades so I know a lot of people to get some of the things we need at much more reasonable pricing than a typical person would. It also helps that he has several sponsors that help us out bc we couldnt afford to keep this up with all the horrible luck he's had (worse than anything i ever experienced in my many years of racing), including: totalling his 1st car on his 5th night out, blowing up the original engine that came with the 1st car, seizing the cheap engine I threw together, destroying 2 transmissions before converting to manual, a couple major wrecks that caused a lot of damage, etc. Unfortunately, it's an extremely addicting hobby that we both love and he's an amazing driver that can take even a bad car to the front.
I walked up behind a Home Depot employee once, and said "excuse me Sir?" the moment SHE turned around my heart sank.... I completely forgot what I wanted to ask about. Brutally embarrassing!

My shop teacher in college did the 24 Hours of Lemons casually and the race is meant to A make a mockery of the 24 Hours of LeMans and B to just be fun 😀. Part of the fun is will it make it a few laps.
This is why you don't bring a $500 German car to a lemons race. You'll spend the entire time in the pit wrenching on it. We race the most despised Miata. My team members are all over 6' tall and we look ridiculous in this thing, but the only time we're in the pit is when we're having sandwiches :)

Wonder when someone at Lemons thinks about racing a Corolla. They could not finish on top, but would enjoy more racing, than spending time fixing the car.
I paid $1100 for mine in 2016 with only 100k miles on it. Then sold it 2 years later for 500... i dont know about now, but Toyota used to be considered a bad choice for Lemons - it seemed like anybody racing one had a non catastrophic failure that took them out the race....
The key to "winning" lemons, isnt power, its reliabilty. Remember, because of the $500 rule, most of these cars have been thrashed within an inch of their lives, so designs that handle abuse well, tend to dominate. This is why Volvos do well. 4 cylinder fox body mustangs did well too, but with the resurgence of interest in them, theyve been priced out of the series for the most part.
I think they're going to have to change 'The 24 hour Race of Lemons' to the minimal of $800 per car since the pandemic hit. It cost $500 just to fill up the tank these days

Epoxy glue works much better than silicone, if you used that from the beginning you would have no problems, there are some kits to repair fuel tanks that use epoxy glue, the silicone doesn't work because the gas melts the silicone, saying this for future reference. Thanks for the content really love it!

All the safety shit blows the budget for me. I've had a pile of junky free cars, including 2 Fox Mustangs and 3 Mavericks. But I can't afford the racing suit, shoes, roll cage, extinguisher, seatbelts...

I think they were drilling holes to for draining the water after pressure washing it and didn't explain to Leenda where _not_ to drill.
