I bought the AP1 clubs 2 month ago as I had ping g10 for nearly 10 year and the AP1 are terrific clubs much easier to hit and the impact feels great 👍 so for me AP1 all day
I tried both these clubs along with taylormade m2 and mizuno hot metal which most people will do the same. And just today I went for the hot metals. The g400 were a close second with the hot metal winning on a better feel on great strikes. Like said they all launch the ball very high.
A correctly weighted and properly fitted shaft always makes the difference in performance characteristics of the club......It's tough to say which club would perform better until all the different variables of proper "Fit" were first addressed.....Those dry data numbers would surely change, depending.
Thanks for all the testing you do Ali. What is most telling in these numbers for me is the deviations. In that regard the AP1 was much better (for you, in this test sequence) than G400. Example 4 yards variance in carry vs. 8 yards variance in carry is 100% better. Launch angle similar (1.2 vs. 2.1 degrees) and just one outlier in spin numbers. I think dispersion both in the numbers and an ending position would be great to have an analysis on.
I admit I prefer the look of the AP1 over the G400, but these are big helpful clubs. I tried the G400 and just could not get the consistency I want - blame the pilot not the aircraft for that though. I bought the M1s a few months back, just edged it over the MP18-MMC for me. But if I was buying now I might go for the AP3 or even P790. I suspect that AP1 & G400 are aimed at inconsistent ball strikers or players with 15+ HC
Would you say the new G410 would be a better comparison to the 718 AP1? I am basically in between these two models but can’t find a direct comparison video. Unfortunately I don’t have a fitter close to where I live so I will most likely have to make my choice based on what I can gather online. I’m sure both are great clubs but for 850 - 900$ I would like to try and get the better or the 2 models. Thanks and nice video 👍🏾
I know this is a year old, but I noticed he talked about the more backspin on the Titleist stopping it better. Form the numbers I seen, the G400 stopped better. It actually pulled two back 1 yard from carry, while Titleist only pulled one back. Not seeing the extra roll on the G400 on this chart: ua-cam.com/video/7UWqaDkxwZs/v-deo.html
On these game forgiveness irons, I am really not that concerned with hitting an extra 5 yards on a solid strike. I am much more interested in the actual forgiveness. I would rather see how the club performs from an accuracy and distance standpoint with a strike toward the toe and heel and how much deviation one would see from a solid center strike. I would love to see a comparison that uses impact tape to select 3 hits for each club...a center, a toe and a heel.

I’m a total beginner but I love the titliest brand , would they suit a beginner or not
Great test, Ali. Very close performance. I don't like reflected glare, so I'd choose the Pings.

Yes, both aimed at being more forgiving with a little bit of offset.
On the cover photos the ping looks humongous compared to the AP1. Is that the case?

Can you compare the Mizuno HotMetall and the 718AP1s?
Does he even see the ball when he hits it? Looks like he pulls his head off the ball every time....
Correct, another myth in golf
Greg Smith, there are blind people who strike the ball well.
just like anika does, i dont think that really matters strikin solid.
I was thinking exactly the same

Theses were the same I tested and picked the g400 over the titilist
Looks like the ping has more of a draw bias based on the offline numbers.
good for faders
G400 looks hideous
