I have owned these cars since 2011. Both 2006's. I don't care what people say, there are basic facts involved with them. ALWAYS use 10w60 oil in a stock V10, I used Red Line only, perfer the K&N gold filter. Do periodic SMG slushes, same with the dual type radiator, change diff oil regularly, PS fluid, brake fluid, warm the V10 up correctly, never use wheel spacers..there are really so many things I learned in my 11+ years of the E60 M5 cars, way too much to sit here and type..just one more, throttle actuators, most failures are in the plastic type gears. You can take them apart, clean it, re grease with better lubricant. Replace the high pressure vanos oil line asap...........
07 E63 M6 99,900 miles Stock rod bearings Doesn’t burn oil Impressive Blackstone results extremely minimal wear. Only things replaced other than regular maintenance is spark plugs, coils (this engine loves coils), idle actuators, diff seal leak, AC compressor and the idler pulleys. Other than that it has been solid. A bit of a head turner but nothing like a red car or even the new vette. Regardless, she is my Night Raven, my Stealth Bomber, my Black Betty (bam-ba-lam)! It’s a magnificent machine, and an exemplary example of engineering. Pushing it to redline is amazing. Third gear is where this car shines by the time you get to the top of third you are at 130! There’s very few places where I live where I can truly enjoy this car!
Best way to drive it in town is to pop it into manual and use the paddles. When you shift, lift off the throttle for half a second and jump back on it. Best way to drive in stop start traffic. Also easier on the clutch
I have a 2007 M6 e64. I bought it new. It has never burned oil, but it will push that 1st half quart out almost immediately. It reminds me of an airplane I had once with a lycoming 540. You just learned to run it a quart low because that 1st quart was gone at takeoff.
I own an E63 M6, 1st thing I did was replace the clutch/flywheel, changes like a dream (no jolts like I got driving it home from the seller) BTW, Idianapolis Red is the colour of my interior (Merino leather) too. It's rare, it's beautiful!
you be surprise that it is a head turner despite it being a huge gamble regarding expensive repairs a sleeper with a V10 + manual gearbox + awesome exhaust note = pure awesomesauce
Yup! I already replaced 2 throttle actuators, 1 idle actuator and 1 ionic sensor. It’s really expensive. So far my 06 has 68000 miles on it. Locally driven but a complete head turner. I’ll keep mine for now. 😁
Normal maintenance in my opinion: 2008 with 81K miles Rebuilt throttle actuators x2 spark plugs fuel injectors (maintenance to avoid hydro lock) done while replacing T/A's 4x coils, will replace other 6 soon Coolant lines (main x4), had small leak from upper right Alternator: Not bad, ended up it was the oil level sensor pulling down the IBS bus. Oil level sensor. filters, oil, etc (normal) I'm Happy!
On the SMG pump it's the motor for the hydraulic system that goes out. You don't have to replace the whole damn thing. You can just replace the hydraulic pump motor. And the part for that cost only about $445 US. And you don't have to get it from Europe.
The issue of clunky shift between the 1st & 2nd gear might be hydraulic transmission oil ... I had the same issue when the oil was in low level.. after increasing it took some days driving then it just stoped doing it...
or check your rear differential, its good the change that fluid on that every 30,000 I believe. don't quote me on exact miles but still that might be a good idea to have that serviced as well. I got mine replaced recently after putting new smg transmission in my 06.
Your shifts are clunky most likely because your car probably hasn't had clutch adaptation run on it in years / many tens of thousands of miles if ever. Pirate yourself a copy of ISTA/D (aka ISTA+ in some places) get a good K+DCAN cable and learn to run the clutch teach-in and adaptation. If that doesn't fix it, that may also be a sign that the clutch is almost worn out, old clutch springs can chuck the little button tabs that evenly distribute pressure and go for an excursion in the transmission case, causing all kinds of strange behavior. Also your oil consumption may be PCV related - mine uses 1 liter per 5000 miles of very hard, fast driving at well over 100K miles. Rod bearings can affect this as well.
This is probably the most helpful comment I’ve ever gotten bro thank you 🙌🏻 going to look into that. Run bearings need to be done for sure just for preventative maintenance. Appreciate all the tips!!
Ok gotcha my 07 is in bad shape doing research to get it back on the road I'm in Chicago suburbs and have been in contact with PKW Motorsports and they have been great to work with I'm a new follower and love your content keep it up !!!
It had about 115k miles on it just do service change parts that will go out these cars will last for ever people that dont know about m cars are the ones to tend to damage there engine

Awesome machines. I’m looking to buy a second M5!
you should make a video about things to do to keep one of these running reliably, you seem to know a lot more about them then most
I gave a e63 2007 bmw m6. Just bought a 2006 bmw m5. Just did rod bearings and a shit tons of maintenance to mine.

Totally agree. If you take good care of the car the repairs aren’t too bad, and there’s nothing like that V10 sound!
18 you got one , eam I'm 52 and still dreaming about 1

nice man, i live in etobicoke and have a e60 m5 as well, we should meet up someday downtown and do a highway run
100% bro that would be fun. I’ll be at a bunch of car meets around Toronto this summer as well! Might host one 🙌🏻

Run the clutch adaption process.
From Chicago, drive in the winter all of the time
In what oil consumption you refered .. it is not that amount of quantity.. it depends on the way you drive . 👍👍

Eyyy fellow e60 m5 from Toronto
No wayyy, gotta cruise sometime haha
Love my 08 m5 @97k miles.
Black with black & tan interior.
I want your red interior so bad.
Black and Tan is a nice combo 🔥🔥 enjoy the car bro and 97k is low mileage for an 08 that’s awesome.
Glad you like the red interior 😈🔥
I want Ivory or tan....and have camel/redish color...my M5 is white.
swap? LOL!
Change 4 pcv valves to burn less oil
Gonna look into it thank you🙌🏻
that little bar for sensitivity look at the " ! " logo ! :) you have an internal error
It would be nice if someone could study the SMG issues and come up with a fix.
I know man I wish. Its been the biggest issue for my M5 so far
As far as SMG sluggishness on the e60 m5 a company called ESS TUNING has a software upgrade that smooths out that lag between shifts.
@@bryanwilson2197 will check it out. It’s only really noticeable in 1st and second gear but would still be worth upgrading
Did you do the smg pump replacement yourself?
