    Its not out of phase! Its series and parallel!

      Your are correct, I only meant that it sounds out of Phase. Since Phase cancellation is what happens when two pickups interfere with each other’s frequency responses, most guitar players think of that sound as thin sounding. When this happens, we say that the pickups are out of phase. Seymour is using the triple shot to put the pick up in parallel. But for the most part the sound is the same in the idea that you get strat like tone with no 60 cycle hum. Again thanks for the feed back.

      Best not to use the term out of phase. The parallel coils are in phase electrically. There is some phase cancellation but the reason we reserve the term "out of phase" for pickups or coils that are actually out of phase (meaning one sine wave will be up while the other is down) is that there is a ton more cancellation, it's unmistakably thinner (not like the parallel sound) and generally in pickup installs it constitutes an error. It's usually something people want to fix. They've installed a replacement pickup with a Fender single coil for example and its out of phase, they need to reverse hot and ground, etc.
      If you did wire humbucker coils to be parallel or series but out of phase with one another, it would sound radically different and it also would not be hum cancelling. Carry on.

      It may not be out of phase, but you can use the Triple Shots wiring to switch between in- and reverse phase coils in a humbucker, if it has four conductors.

    I've always had the impression that these little guys are almost cut to fit with P-Rails (Duncan HB with one P90 coil and one thin blade single coil). THAT is why you'd want to choose which coil you want to split to. Phil is right, though, on a standard hb, the difference is negligible.

      I use them with Invaders. Out of the 32 possible combos, maybe 5 or 6 sound more or less "similar". Wire the guitar with a switch so the two pickups can be in series for a bigger sound, or parallel.. in which case you get about 40 different combinations.

    --- [1] Last week (11/7/19), I had the original pickups replaced on my Steinberger Spirit GT-Pro Deluxe (HSH). On the two humbuckers, I had Triple-Shots installed. The new pickups installed were all Seymours: SH-11 Custom Custom Hum: Bridge; Vintage Rails: middle; & P-Rails Neck: neck. I am really pleased with these newly installed pickups with Triple-Shots. --- [2] My findings regarding the Triple-Shots are much in line with Phil's findings. The TSs work really well on the neck position. --- [3] Of note, the Bridge SH-11 (with the Triple-Shot in the single coil, nearest bridge position) gives a nice, quite sharp single-coil Strat Bridge position sound. This SH-11 bridge pickup (in the parallel humbucker position) gives a slightly fuller, a bit warmer, & quite nice sound in line with the 'bridge in single coil nearest the bridge' sound. --- [4] One caveat - the consumer feedback indicates that the Triple-Shots are fragile. Yes, they are. The first pair of Triple-Shots that I received had one good, but one bad. I had to return these, & reorder a second pair of TSs. This second pair of TSs were both good. This fragile TS problem is just something that consumers will have to put up with. However, the TSs are worth it. Richard

    I thought the mystery 4th switch position was parallel coils. Of course... I can't find the instructions.
    I use this with a SD P-Rail.

    Options on a 4con humbucker: inphase/out of phase, parallel/series/, and single coil/humbucker. If you can get more let everyone know!

    How practical are these in a live setting? Also, how sturdy are they? They're pretty small; can they stand up to real-world use?

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +2

      They will take a beating. I know there small but they are tuff. A lot of gigging players like to take a silver sharpie and dot the the tip of the switches so you can see them better, but other than that they work great for live. They are not the easiest things to do in the middle of a song but it would be possible. If you do a lot of switching while playing I might go with a toggle switch instead. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

      Thanks for the response. I have an Epiphone SG that I'm thinking of upgrading to:
      - P-Rails or Seth Lover pickups
      - 18:1 tuning machines
      - Single Tonestyler tone pot
      - Single volume control
      If I go with the P-Rails, I was thinking of taking out the bottom vol/tone controls and putting in 2 3-way switches for the P-Rails. I haven't been all that impressed with the sounds of the pickups in parallel mode. What do you think?

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +1

      Mike Austin I think you can't go wrong keeping it simple. Switches are simple and the p rails will sound great. I like switches when ever you can use them.

    I have a dumb question, is switching a neck humbucker in and out of phase within itself (one row of pole pieces to the other) the same as putting it in and out of phase in relation to the middle and/or bridge pickup? If not......which has the most noticeable sound difference? Oh and the same question goes for series and parallel....is it the same within it self as it is in relation to the other pickups?

    Nice job and very informative. I am looking at the triple shots for p rails pickups.

    Try bridge out coil and neck inner coil. Would it make it somewhat like a strat 2 position?

    does this work with any guitar as long as you have 4 wire pickups using standard wiring or do you need to have split coil wiring done inside the guitar?

    • @kevinbillingsley8256
      @kevinbillingsley8256 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, but you'll have to use your head for the wiring. Seymour Duncan is only going to give you the instructions for their wiring color scheme. You'd have to map that out to use, say, Dimarzio pickups.

    wait is it out of phase or parallel? because it says parallel on their site, out of phase is something completely different

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +1

      Phase cancellation is what happens when two pickups interfere with each other’s frequency responses, most people find the result to be thin sounding. When this happens, we say that the pickups are out of phase. Seymour is using the triple shot to put the pick up in parallel. But the sound is the same. The term out of phase to most plays informs them that it will sound thin, but no 60 cycle hum.

    Greetings, could you please let me know if single coils hum in B or N - can't hear from your demo. Theoretically they should but SD may use some magic dust. Regardless - if I split each in B+N position - are they going to cancel each other's hum? I'm modding PRS Santana SE and got DIRTY TORQUE + BLUES ENGINE set from Iron Gear. Was thinking of modding with Freeway Ultra switch until I learned about this gadget.
    Thanks,
    Alex.

      Did u ever do this mod? I wondered the same thing as you: whether the hum goes away if u split both bridge and neck together. I have a godin lgxsa and it sounds so good, but I hate single coil hum and was thinking these could help get eliminate that while being able to make more single coil combinations or something

    • @alexandershugayev
      @alexandershugayev 3 роки тому

      @@asstin18 hi, yes - but I went for one of the options where any position offers hum canceling i.e. no true single coil split. It should be on the diagram that came with the unit or on their web site.
