As a 73 year old who began writing and home recording rough demos on a 2 track Sony reel to reel tape recorder in the 60's, I was pretty reluctand to even consider what I thought was 'cheating'. I've now changed my mind and even though it suggests it could mean a massive learning curve it also sounds as if it could be an amazing experience.

Melodyne can do so much. We've fixed one out of tune string on an acoustic guitar that no one noticed until we recorded the companion instruments. Why wouldn't you use a tool like that?

I’ve noticed people who hate autotune, will listen to an artist live, and when people complement them, they will just say it’s because of autotune and they can’t actually sing, and the artist is not using any autotune 😂 that happens all the time… then people say, why can’t you just be as good as a vocalist as Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury or Elton John. Yeah let’s just all be as good as the top 10 greatest of all time… I listen to Post Malone live acoustic set and people keep talking about autotune on his voice, and I literally hear so many notes out of tune! It’s like people saying autotune is the devil are also tone deaf. Yeah, no wonder you guys don’t think you need autotune because you can’t hear pitch. 😂

Hey, Joe, a couple of times I've used Melodyne on a piano part (since it had good transients) and created a MIDI track with it. Then I put a different kind of virtual keyboard on that and blended (mixed) the two together. It was pretty cool.

So I knew almost everything in this video. But the reason I knew this was I'd watched earlier videos that Joe had made telling me how to use Melodyne. It was good to (1) get a refresher, (2) get the positive reinforcement that I did remember earlier lessons, and (3) learn that I had stumbled into using Joe's second method when I was mixing.
Thanks Joe for these lessons. They are so valuable to me. I really, really appreciate how much you've helped my ability to record and mix. The fact that I use Studio One makes your videos even more valuable.

The best part of this for me was learning how to quickly split a blob! That’s great. I find that when you tune the sibilance part, it makes it weird and phasey sounding. Which only gets highlighted even more after compression.

    1) you don't need to use the alt key to move the blobs, just disable the snap to grid (little note in the upper right of the window)
    2) when harmonizing you can move slightly the blobs right or left (randomly) to give a more natural back voices effect

Love melodyne. It repairs phrasing issues too! If your singer comes in a bit late you can nudge the first word forward a bit. And if they dont hold a note long enough you can stretch it out like the time stretch function. AND! it works on other instruments too!! For example if your bass player ( I'm not picking on you) hits a bad note it can be fixed!!

Hey Joe, just a quick tip to piggyback off your octave up/down doubles: The further you tune a pitch away from the original, the more it can help to adjust the formant of that blob as well - it can help retain more of a natural voice (a la "throat" in Autotune)

melodyne is cool but don’t think it’s fair to say it’s just like doing eq or something
Cutting out lows or something the mic picked up can make the recording sound more like what the vocal actually sounded like in the room
Using melodyne by nature is changing the performance to sound better and different than what the vocalist did
Like if you heard a vocal recorded and then heard a good eq’d version the next day you’d be like yup that’s about how it sounded
If you heard a vocal recorded and then it was pitch corrected and had a melodyne harmony added you’d say wow that sounds way different that what we heard yesterday

I just used Melodyne for something different. I'm using a sample for a dance song, and I could NOT get it to line up right with my measures. I don't know why. I opened it up in Melodyne, along with my beat. I was able to see the blobs better, and lined it up perfectly. While I was there, I made several note changes, which sounds better than using the up/down tune in my DAW. Melodyne helped immensely with my current project!!!

We need to tune vocals even if you have relatively good pitch, because of electronic music. All VSTs are dead on 100 percent perfect pitch. Vs the old days with live instruments, if the singers natural vibratos had some slight patchiness, it wouldn’t be detected.

I like your sense of humor when fixing the 'iffy' notes sung, knowing full well there's a bit of cheating involved and like me (I guess) I've been a hard core opposite fence rider when it came to auto tune. But, indeed, using it as an effect and not going completely ape shit turning the effect knob to eleven, like a lot of artists use nowadays, it does have its moments. So I might just sleep on it one more time and who knows, I might have to invest in the 5essential for starters. Thanks mate great vid.

Hi Joe, I have been watching your channel for years and enjoy learning stuff from you. I wanted to make a comment about a professor of mine in audio school who made this statement. In order to compete in modern audio industry it is almost imperative to use pitch correction even if the song "does not need it". Because everyone uses it in pro studios. It has become a standard people are use to hearing. Because people are used to the sound if a mixer does not use it their tracks are going to sound sub par to industry standard. I almost always do a blanket tuning but I will only correct it about 75% instead 100% even if the track does not need it. It always sounds more in tune somehow and mixes sound better. Any thoughts.

I have to intervene and say Melodyne is not an Autotune! as in it does not tune automatically in realtime like Antares autotune, therefore you don't get the tpane fx because you still retain the original glide from one word to another. You can of course create the tpane fx by using the pitch tool and adjusting the glide to a more steeper angle.

I first heard this effect many years ago on Sinead O'Connor's unforgettable version of Elton John's 'Sacrifice'. I've tried using the Aphex Aural Exciter but there is something missing.(Distortion, phasing, etc?)

You don’t need to convince us why we need to use the auto tuner or how much to use it or how little to use it. Everybody’s got their own idea about how much to tune how much not to tune. One time I just changed a note by a half step because I liked that note better than the one I had originally recorded. I do a lot of saxophone recording, and I like to fix the bad notes on my saxophone after I’ve recorded it, because it’s really impossible to play that beast in tune the first time around.
