Why I love my SMEG Toaster - 5 Year Review

A toaster you would buy in 1950 would cost $250 when adjusted for inflation. Due to many of these companies being run by either hedge funds that prioritize shareholders, or Wall Street entrenched CEOs, the components of the toaster have been reduced in cost and quality as much as possible so that the device is functional enough, but also designed to fail in a relatively short period of time. Also, these same companies outsource the manufacture of the devices to areas of the world with the least environmental regulation and cheapest possible labor. With these things combined, you get things that seem incredibly affordable at face value, but ultimately fail to provide a satisfying product that lasts. Most companies have operated on these shareholder principles I’ve listed for the past 50 years, gradually distorting to society what things are worth or what they cost. Which leads to a feeling that a one of the best toasters you can buy is expensive. When people in the 1950s were regularly paying a similar price for your average toaster. That said, many of these components have cheapened over time, but this toaster might not be getting the credit it’s due for having modern technology on the inside that helps it maintain itself as one of the best toasters.

I must say yeah I do love my Smeg two slice toaster, and really does work well, over the course months I collect Smeg products: drip coffee maker, milk frother and now just received coffee grinder, expensive hubbies, lol, Smeg kettle /? I love my De'Longhi kettle , sorry

Just got the British Flag Smeg Toaster for free. My husband does clean outs for landlords whose tenants have gone been evicted for whatever reason. They take what they want and what’s left behind is ours for the taking. Landlords orders Lol! Stuff like this makes it so worth the dirty work because, the things you can find are sometimes… “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

I haven't had very good luck with smeg I own a kettle and a fridge freezer the build quality is absolutely appalling at first they woo you with there metal construction internally it's just cheap parts my kettle has broken 6 times I repaired it the final time by cannibalising parts from a another kettle that's not even smeg they had the same parts. All of the drawers and hinges in my fridge freezer broke an it has major issues with temperature control constantly over freezing and causing excessive frost an snow. The fridge part pools up with water then freezes. All in all I don't have much good things to say about this brand they are definitely riding on the reputation of the past they are not the smeg from the 1950s anymore what comes to mind is all style and no substance sorry Danny love the videos though

Yeah It's nice to share and learn what others have found though. It sounds like wether its 220v or 120v appliances their qc *is questionable. Kind of sad for such an incredible aesthetic.

Money wasted. My 4 slices of toasts fly out of the toaster .. Kettle is too heavy, no water level indication ball.very hard to see how much water is inside.. Dissapointed.

i own one, the largest, and the toasting is awful. Each piece of bread gets a different toasting and one side is always much more toasted than the other side. You can buy it if you like the aesthetics but dont buy it if you want a good toaster.

Surprised anything lasts 5 years let alone a toaster. Got a cheap ass B&D toaster. Works okay, not as pretty as Smeggie. Just kills me that the bottom burns while the top stays kinda tan-ish. Oh, it’s a skill to catch my toast mid-flight upon ejection before they hit the deck.

Garbage - that toaster has not been used for 5yrs, if it has it’s not had daily usage. None of the black paint has worn off so you’re not guessing the settings, which change with each use anyway. Finally got rid of my smeg and I’m so glad. It was an expensive daily headache of guess if the toast is burnt yet and hooking it out with a chopstick.

I'd say your experience doesn't match mine. The paint doesn't wear off that easily unless maybe you keep rubbing or changing the settings.

Yeah after 5 years this piece of crap (4 slice), pops the toast all the way OUT of the machine. Sending it randomly to floor or bench and now, spring broke, so toast doesn’t stay down. Crappy Chinese crap.
