An actor of the first magnitude. Comedy is hard to do, though Sir John Gielgud makes it look so easy; ours, the relish of enjoyment! Thank you, Sir John. No one could have filled Hobson's shoes but you, sir.
It's amazing that people who saw Arthur didn't realize that Sir John Gielgud, who played Hobson, was one of the finest British actors of the 20th century. Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson and Gielgud dominated the stage in England.
One of the finest British actors of the 20th century. I really miss this guy. No one carved out words and phrases like he did. Not even Rex Harrison in his prime. And Harrison did not do nearly as many classical performances as Gielgud.
Thank you for the reminder re: Sir John and his gift(s) to cinema/acting. Tbh, candid and succinct, he richly deserves (just about) all of his (Arthur) lines to be displayed here for there are many gems/jewels to behold. He's worth certainly more than 2+ mins of exposure/fame for generations yet to come and view your video. Yet, I do thank you indeed. 🧐
I thought his best line was when he met Liza Minelli for the first time saying, "Usually one must go to a bowling alley to meet a women of your stature".
The sequel wasn't nearly as good, but I love when Hobson returns as a spirit and tells Arthur to stop drinking so he can be a father to his soon-to-arrive son.
Hobson was right most of the time in setting Arthur straight the one inappropriate comment he made about Linda was wrong about saving money on prostitution Arthur had to set him straight on that one.
Every line delivered by Sir John Gielgud was perfect. He made the film.
Definitely deserved that oscar.
With all due respect to Dudley, Liza, a great supporting cast and the screenplay, Sir John elevated this movie in spectacular fashion.
RIP Sir John Gielgud (April 14, 1904 - May 21, 2000), aged 96
You will be remembered as a legend.

He was born for the role of Hobson.

The finest actor I've ever seen, he stole this film 💞
I miss him so much. One of my favourite actors

A great actor. Incredible timing.
I use that line often at work. "Would you help me carry this outside?" "It's what I live for!,"
A gem of a movie. I wish they had never done the remake.
Author your a good son...
Something he would never hear from his Father
God he was good in this role.
He was sublime.

Damn he was amazing
The slapping at 1:38. A classic.
I love the part where he pretends to dies and he tells Arthur to take his books back to the library.
Hobson and Arthur had a father and son relationship.
"Usually one must go to a bowling alley to meet someone of your caliber"
Priceless
Sir John Gielgud actor legendary 🎭
Theatre 🎭
Perhaps the classiest rendition of the words, “Go screw yourself” in movie history....
Is Sir Arthur Gielgud, in Arthur.
That Butler was epic!!!
Some golden quotes in this movie
@@MBACCR Sure were!
Pure Genius
Great movie
Everyone feels unloved..
I thought his best line was when he met Liza Minelli for the first time saying, "Usually one must go to a bowling alley to meet a women of your stature".
Mark Beckert True - I should have put that in!
I liked when he walked into Linda's apartment, looked around and said "How revolting"
Grand inqisitor!excellant!!!!!
Ah, we Brits have just the best bloody sense of humour. Bar none.
"You're miserable? I've got all this and I'm on a salary"
"From evils past and evils yet to come, right now I choose to escape." Sound familiar.
Reptile!
Great actors make comedy look easy. It is not easy. Gielgud was a gem.
Absolutely Loved "Go screw yourself."
The sequel wasn't nearly as good, but I love when Hobson returns as a spirit and tells Arthur to stop drinking so he can be a father to his soon-to-arrive son.
“Would you remove your helmet? Please? And now your goggles? Please?”
An amazingly talented jazz pianist and comic, especially in partnership with Peter Cook. PS: Subtitles laughably inaccurate.
"Your a good son"
Hobson was right most of the time in setting Arthur straight the one inappropriate comment he made about Linda was wrong about saving money on prostitution Arthur had to set him straight on that one.
He later buys Hobson a basketball claiming he knew he didn't have one. He clearly has one at the I'll run you a bath scene
+sliat1981 I think that basketball you can see belongs to Arthur; Arthur then buys one for Hobson so he has one too.
He really look like a British snob Butler the second incarnation of Arthur was horrible I thought
