Sir John Gielgud's performance in this film is definitely why he won The Oscar he deserved. Dudley Moore's performance is a thrill. Rest in Heaven to them. 😢😢😢
I know it was billed as a romantic comedy and mostly focused on that relationship but I loved the relationship between Arthur and Hobson in this movie. They really were like a father and son. That Arthur decided to be the responsible adult and take care of Hobson at the end was quite touching. Arthur finally grew up because for the first time in his life he wanted to take care of someone else.
While a rather sardonic individual, Hobson was eternally loyal and supportive to Arthur. It's unfortunate that the only person who cared about him had to die.
I miss both of them, too. Dudley Moore had a brain wasting disease that made his last years a living hell! With Arthur I can always remember hill when he was on top of his game!
Hobson: Thrilling to meet you, Gloria. Gloria : Hi. Hobson : Yes... You obviously have a wonderful economy with words, Gloria. I look forward to your next syllable with great eagerness.
I didn't want this thing to get me all teary-eyed but it did. Growing up is never easy especially when you're a drunk. Redemption a second chance that's what it's all about... returning the favor
When the orderly says he shouldn't be eating this stuff, and Arthur said he doesn't want his last meal to be Jello. He was dying, nothing could stop it. Let him have what he enjoyed.
Jesus christ. This made me sob so bad. It was just so emotional. Arthur really loves Hobson, and he wants to make Hobson's last moments to be enjoyable as it can be. It makes me think about my dad. It makes me think about hkw much of a selfish, hateful, abusive person I am. I don't appreciate the people around me enough. I don't deserve the things I have. I don't want it. Why?
@@JustinJack Jeez. I can’t believe I actually made this comment that long ago. Thanks for replying and thank you for giving that advice. I was overly emotional when I made that comment and I was just venting. It’s weird to know how much you can change in nearly a year, huh?
So happy that John Gielgud won an Oscar for this performance. But how typical of Hollywood to award an Oscar to a legend of the British stage and screen for playing a butler.
Arthur's love for Hobson was so pure. He gave up drinking by choice and took care of him hands-on when he could've afforded nurses, you hear him say Hobson "had a bad night" meaning he had no one there except HIMSELF. Arthur used his wealth to bring food and Hobson's bedroom stuff to make it cozy for him in his final days while he slept in the hospital bed. I think that's why Hobson and Bitterman are intensely loyal to him because they know that he's a kind soul beneath the drunken phase and knew he'd give it up for them.
I just saw this movie yesterday. This movie really sends a message. Arthur felt bullied, and manipulated by his family to marry a woman he didn’t love just to get his inheritance.when Hobson was dying he was the one to tell Arthur he needed to do what he wanted to do when he asked about Lynda ( Eliza Mennelli) at the end of the Movie Arthur decided to go with his heart and marry the woman he loved inheritance or not?
Did anyone ever catch what Bitterman said outside Hobson’s hospital room?? I think he was in Love with him and they just edited the crap out of movie where they were never in a scene together. Watch it and listen. He said it personally. Listen.
I agree they should have had Bitterman in more scenes as he had great comic sense. Bringing Linda home to Queens was hilarious. He played it to the hilt. There were so many supporting actors that hit home runs in this film, the florist. Burt Johnson, Linda s dad. I wonder if the cast knew they were on ti something special with this film?
I loved this movie as a little girl..I was 7-8 when I first saw it..I loved it then, and now.. Btw what is "Kipper's and Egg's"?? I obviously know what Egg's are,but not Kipper's...😉
@@sliat1981 Arthur himself is quite childish, and had been basically raised as a child by Hobson. The gifts were intended to be memories of sillier times when all was well.
The best gift Arthur gave to Hobson was letting him know he was loved. Hobson had always taken care of Arthur despite Arthur's drunken and childish behavior. But now Hobson was ill and needed to be cared for and Arthur sobered up and took on the challenge. It was important to Arthur to let Hobson know he could count on Arthur to be there when it counted. That's love.

"If I begin to die... please take this off my head. This is not the way I wish to be remembered."
Best line of the film.
Our sentiments also.
Oh no, he had so many
You're miserable?? I've got all this and I'm on a salary
My favorite line from Hobson is when he tells Arthur he loves him, bc Arthur had never loved anyone or had anyone tell him he was loved
(walks into Linda's apartment and looks around)....how revolting
This scene was actually genuinely heart warming. The bond between Hobson and Arthur was real.
It’s a movie
Brilliant reply!
You’d think they wrote it that way, intentionally, or something.
Arthur... *you're a good son*
This is no doubt one of the absolute classic scenes in movie history.
A poignant piece that's missing; "Hobson, what do you want?" "I want to be younger." Very touching, especially as we age.

Thanks for savimg this.. I had this up a long time ago... Loved Hobson a lot... He cared for Arthur more then Arthur's real father...
Hobson could of secretly been Arthurs real father?
So heart-warming and REAL.
They don't make movies like this anymore and they never will. The re-make was an abomination.
The remake did not have Dudley Moore, John Gielgud, Liza Minnelli, or the incomparable Geraldine Fitzgerald.
@@thehair1474 The writing was terrible, as well.
@@mindriot91_96 as was everything else, as well.

Hobson was more of a father to Arthur than his own.
And Arthur was just as much a son to him.
A very touching scene - hilarious as this movie will always be, it definitely has a serious theme to it.

Great acting from two legends.

One of best funniest and saddest scenes in Arthur Thnx for putting this on.
While a rather sardonic individual, Hobson was eternally loyal and supportive to Arthur. It's unfortunate that the only person who cared about him had to die.
And it's unfortunate that they actually died :(
Linda loved him,and so did his grandmother. Martha was a crusty old bird, but she loved him. The only one who could stop Burt from killing him.

Happy Birthday Dudley Moore ❤️ Greatly missed
This film had heart. I don't know what they were thinking remaking it - with Russell Brand of all people.
Exactly! Can't just remake these stories without the beautiful talent of the true actors!
I haven't seen this film in ages, but I still think about this scene every so often. Inspired work throughout.
Sir John stole every scene he was in. Amazing.
probably why he won the oscar.
