What a humble man. And what a voice he was gifted with (and learned how to use to maximum effect!) I'm envious of anyone who got to see Sir John live on stage. RIP Sir John.
Wonderful interview - thanks for posting. Great to hear the Gielgud being interviewed - I found him always to be an interesting interviewee. He became an excellent film actor especially in later years, and stole every scene he was in re: Arthur.
Btw, watching him as the hospital chief of staff in "The Elephant Man" was a performance for the ages. Although short in duration, his moments on screen were like glorious glimpses of humanity for all to see. He was simply irreplaceable. RIP.
I know it was a small role, but, as Charles Ryder's father, he was spectacular. I understand that he and Olivier were at war over who should get the part.
Met Gielgud and Irene Worth when they were on Bdway. Attempted to interview them late 60s and it was appalling. Wrote to JG in the Eighties when doing my book on Marilyn Monroe about Larry Olivier and Marilyn. I have 4 handwritten notes from JG, one scribbled Christmas Eve 1984, Lived in Stroud in a magical Gothic house. G-d would I love a place like that!
Was he holding that cigarette just as some kind of prop or did he actually smoke? If so, how is it that he lived to be 96 years old and always retain that wonderful speaking voice?

Impeccable voice
God, I forgot how humble he was. Bless you, John.
What a beautiful voice, it just about hypnotises you!

A womaniser in summers lease
A religous man in wicked lady
Acting goes into all areas
Altho in real life an atheist
And not a womaniser!
