I've got an electric car and I love it. It's range is 280miles and I get 280miles+. It's costs me about £4 to charge it at home on a night time tarrif (empty to full). Batteries on 12 year old Teslas are still totally fine. Chargers are all over the place, never have I been struggling to charge. I've done many trips from England to Scotland and back (at which point motorway charging costs about thew same as petrol) and it only takes 10/15 mins to charge (perfect time to get a coffee). I'm still a petrol head and have classics I love driving, love engine noise and love wrenching on them. But as a machine to get me around when the end point is more important than the journey itself, the electric car is reliable, extremely fast, smooth and just works. There is a place for both in my life, ICE and electric. I like having both in my life and will probably always have both. We don't have to pick sides with everything, everything is so polarised these days, which is a shame.
I hear you. As a scientist, who’s read a LOT about this whole topic, the worst thing is that the underlying reason for the push to EVs is a lie, plain and simple. I’m not a “climate change denier”. No, I’m a very well informed person who was shocked to find out that the notion that humans are destroying the climate is a carefully thought through, half century long, utter fraud. If you’ve ever wondered why it is that our self-appointed elites are not doing any of the things they insist we must do, fly everywhere on executive jets, buy beachfront houses, enjoy fillet mignon and own half a dozen flash cars, its because they all know it’s total nonsense. I bet they fall about laughing at those of us who have punished themselves to lead a carbon sparing existence. In light of this, I know with burning certainty that the forcing of a “transition” from ICE powered cars to EVs has got nothing whatsoever to do with the environment and everything to do with control.
100% for everything day to day EV is simply better. I love seeing a classic, and I enjoy watching people work on them, which is why I'm here and love these channels. I might even suggest criticising people who have reached a different conclusion is not necessary. It's a source of motive power, nothing more.
I too have an EV. Not because I wanted one, but we have free charging at work. Advertised range is 279 and I get that regularly. I've gone from spending £350 a month on diesel to around £15 on electricity at home. Fast chargers now take cars from 20% to 80% in as little as 15 minutes. My EV is almost 5 years old and the battery is still at 98% capacity.
I remember Ben getting the car from the back garden of a house it where in the hedge and other cars there.he had to pull it and drive it through a garage to get it out..brilliant.
oh i remember that - the wheelspins and the really near miss with that fence post, the worst ruts and mud imaginable - ALL in typical british car recsuing weather. he could of given up but gave me a reason to be a patreon.
The odd bit of 'Anglo-Saxon' language really adds to the entertainment value. As does seeing all the gory details of the things that go wrong and the 'tangent stories'. Keep it real lads, two great, genuine car channels.
On the E-Type. I once knew the owner of a Bristol (model unknown, dated around 1975) and rode in it. It was similarly "on the outside" a little dingy and dinged. But on the A40 into Oxford (I witnessed this, I swear) it overtook a squad of motorbikes as though they were standing still. My first job was opposite the "Bristol Motors" "store" on Kensington High Street at a Bristol would definitelyh be in mhy "no cost threshold" garage.
I'm going to start watching Nino because of his reaction to his Kinder toy which was 100% bang on, they'll be getting you to download the f***ing chocolate next.
Nino is so on point about buying something older to learn. I started my mechanic trade school last year, as my first step, BUT I bought a 89 VW pickup as my first car for this very reason in february, so that I can actually work on it in my own time and learn by doing it, rather than just from the paper.
I follow ben and on the odd occasion he might drop a f bomb, but that's ok! it makes it more real life and some of the comments he comes out with are quite humorous! That's why i enjoy the channel! If people don't like it then they don't have to watch!
Totally agree regarding cars looking used. Until 3 years ago I had a Rover P4 that I drove all over the country. I kept it generally clean but I really liked the way the road dirt swirled around the indicators and side lights across the wings. Made it look how it was supposed to look somehow.
I watch both channels and really enjoy. I started life in a garage/Chrysler Rootes dealership. I'm too old and knackered to do what you both do. I had a liking for Triumph cars as a kid. Toledo, 1500TC, Dolomite Sprint, 2500TC. All were run until not economically viable.
Interesting talk about electric cars, it occurred to me that we should stop worrying about what’s coming next in regards to fuel, and spend our time really enjoying what is the absolute best time that will ever be for petrol vehicles.
Great podcast so glad I’m already subscribed to both channels, loving the content equally and I hope Ben stays true to his word and can help Nino to weld the Peugeot truck👍🏻
Loving this, the candid thoughts on your lives as YTs is so interesting, and BTW, smooth handover Ben, you're getting too professional at this...careful now..😂😂😂
Great video, I follow both your channels. Please don’t knock electric cars, love our Tesla model Y, one pedal driving on a twisty Lake District road is great fun. I’ve previously owned a BMW 2002tii and a M535i as well as 3 Range Rovers.
Vauxhall tech here, the electric ones seem to get through on board chargers a fair bit (Corsa same as 208) though seen a few engines changed due to spark plugs breaking and old wetbelts and quite a few gearboxes. Would be interesting to see how it actually played out though!
Kinder chocolate eggs are sold in Canada but not in the USA. Because…..the FDA was worried Americans would choke on the toys found them. Given what is going one down there, it is probably a reasonable thought.
Years ago (many) - we used the word "Jolly" instead of the 'F....' and other naughty words. Granted, it doesn't have the same impact, but, somehow it does seem more socially acceptable. You never know, it may make a come back (don't hold you breath though !).
Really enjoying this chat. However I’m finding it awkward to listen to how I usually do podcasts as I have to have my phone screen on playing the video. Any chance of getting it uploaded to Apple Podcasts and/or Podcast Index so I can listen to it when driving/washing up etc? Cheers!
Should be on Spotify as well. I use UA-cam premium and its replaced Spotify for me and I watch a lot of UA-cam, so recommend this if it doesn't go on your platforms.
Why don’t young people today fit enormously loud in car entertainment any more? I didn’t catch what Nino said when he was expressing dislike of pop and bang maps.
The friendly, informed reply I wrote to the pleasant post by an EV driver has just been deleted by YT. You may think you’ve got free speech. You don’t.
I worked for VW, Audi, seat, mitsubishi for 7 years, used to get a car at 6 miles and sometimes gave it back at 1500 miles! Didn't take long to go through them 😅
The only electric car that is compatible with my life would be a Tesla as the charging infrastructure is there. I cant get one of those though because the CEO is an insane nutter and I dont want to fund his ego!
Great to see you guys chatting, excellent, really enjoyed it, but ..... what on earth is wrong with the Nissan Juke? Why does everyone hate it so? Looks odd perhaps, but it's not that bad, and you've got to have odd, ugly, plain cars. The car I would rather to go to prison than drive is that awfull looking Fiat 500. Now that goes beyond odd, ugly, whatever. That rear end profile just looks so WRONG, and also impractical. I think the thing about electric cars is that they are a more efficient engine than the petrol engine, but then how long they last, and production and disposal emissions etc, I don't know. I agree, they are not the total answer, don't know why they are concentrating so much on them.
Mechanical parts fail but most can be repaired/refurbished. Electronics degrade, and must be changed and are shit to diagnose. In 20 years, would you prefer trying to revive a 2024 ICE Ford Mustang by or a electric Mustang e-mach? Which one will likely be easier, go easier, access to parts, etc…?
True, also new cars look boring as do most electric ones, really since 2005 really 😅. Id imagine by that time retro fitting parts may be cheaper and easier due to advances. Plug and play stuff maybe but yeah not many will do it All modern cars are controlled by electronics like you say which degrade so they are all destined for the scrapper. End of the day a car is just a transport device/status symbol. It's a niche to restore them and keep a classic
Electric cars are so ugly. Tesla looks nice, but would look nicer with a grill, proper steering wheel, dials and gauges, I could possibly get used to an automatic. Think i'd have to make brrm brrm engine noises whilst driving. Electric cars have no soul. How lovely just to go out in a petrol/diesel car on a whim.
I've got an electric car and I love it. It's range is 280miles and I get 280miles+. It's costs me about £4 to charge it at home on a night time tarrif (empty to full). Nino, like yourself has great personality in abundance.
I bet the Juke will be a future classic as so many youngsters have been ferried about in them, and there's a mod market to go with it.
Should have gotten Nino behind the bar serving drinks and chatting to you and Wynne.
