My suggestion in billing is to charge per man hour to do job depending on number of employees that way regardless of wet or dry your time is covered.
I would much rather have this young hard-working man working for me than any large company, I know that he is totally invested in his business(and I’m not talking financially) and would probably do the best job!

Awesome that you guys can make money doing this. In south Texas we drop a lot of leaves and no one pays to get rid of them correctly. They either get bagged or they go into the storm drains.

Run a 12 truck family company in the 757 hampton roads area. We use the little wonders and just bag it by hand. If they are regular customers we do weekly first 10 bags are included. Any after 10 bags we charge per 5 surcharge. But i do indeed love your setup problem is down here not much places to get rid of the leaves! Cheers
The walk - behind leaf blowers are a incredibly useful !!! Many GOOD manufactures out there to purchase equipment from !! I personally selected the Billy Goat walk - behinds because living just a mile from the Atlantic Ocean , the salt air really attacks any metal so I opted for the LITE-WEIGHT composite material on the fan intake housing . Both of mine ARE NOT SELF PROPELLED and gets hard to push / roll through soft rain soaked ground . Again really enjoyed your down to earth interview !

They work well enough but Those little wonder walk behind blowers are so labor intensive. Gotta get a leaf plow or stand on blower, great video!

Nice setup. I still tarp everything to the curb. Don't do it for a living though, just on my own yard. It's usually an 8 hour day.
Long day... But you do what you gotta do.
I did leaf cleanup one year when I was working, 30 bucks a property if it was small amounts and not thick.
If the leaves were a foot tall sitting on the lawn it was 120 dollars and I'd mow the grass at the same time (usually would rake or set my mower high for suction).
When it came to getting rid of the leaves, I just went to the lake (had a camp site I stay at most weekends) and dumped them into my fire pit. Stacked some logs ontop and a bit of gasoline, spent 6 hours one night enjoying the blaze and sipping a few cold ones.

Next year I'm focusing more on efficient mowing and getting out of leaf cleanups. Too much investment for proper setup, inconsistent weather conditions to deal with and when there's a breakdown, good luck catching up. But ,thanks for the informative video. That is just what works best for me.

The company I work for we have big leave trucks they compare to the states but we also have pushers on the front of our mowers to push piles where we want them rather than fighting with piles with blowers

I use our leaves (and neighbors too) and make leaf mold. Now I guess I will have to start charging for leaf removal.
A push blower like that Little Wonder is a must for guys working solo. That’s what I do. Park the push blower and blow leaves toward it with the backpack blower and let the push blower send them further. Then just keep moving the pile with the combination.
Just got a blower buggy. Turns your mower into a smaller version of the hurricane blower! Definitely worth checking out
I just mulch my leaves with my lawnmower. Good for the yard, and less work, and money, all around.

Cool set up,,, my way was is buy a good wide zero turn mower and mulch all my leaves in place. Free fertilizer for the grass. Of course do not wait until all the leaves drop off, go over it a few times as they are dropping.

I work SOLO most of the time , and , not always by choice . Being the owner , the job still has to be done regardless of whether your help decides to show up or not . I know some of you can relate !! I use my ATVs to haul around a DR leaf and lawn vac to locations on a property that are not accessible by any other means . Videos of my equipment can be seen on my UA-cam channel or Facebook page if you are interested , Thanks , Boehm and Associates , Ocean City , Maryland .

you should start up a sideline and turn those leaves to compost then sell it back to them for their flower beds
Definite opportunity if you have the land. fwiw, you need an approximate mix of 50/50 green and brown to compost anything in an acceptable amount of time, and a way to turn it all.

Cool set-up man! In my area a local bulk mulch outfit probably wouldn't even take the leaves. The city has to pay them to drop off loads of yard waste. And then they turn around and sell it bulk/truck loads.
You should add a blade that chops the leaves as they enter the trailer. It would probably add more suction as well and that pile would be half that maybe less
We ran an old City vacuum. Held about 10,000lb wet leave with a 80hp diesel and a 4ft fan. It was a danger to small pets and children

Buy a leaf and branch shredder...makes great mulch for garden...sell it by the bag... I make an extra $5-6k a year for the mulch.
only if they don't have disease from the tree, hard to find a non diseased tree in the states from tree scale. Thats how it originally spread in the 90's from mulch sold and shipped all over. Crazy

@DJ haye. Dam you guys in Michigan are screwed. Every tree is gonna die with your logic. I live in MN, so pretty dam close to Michigan and I've never heard of a healthy tree catching some disease through mulch. So yes it sounds like BS and you never provided any real evidence to suggest otherwise.

Mulch yards typical have a dump site for a per load fee.

Even when they are wet it will still lick them up just not as fast. It'll clog the hose a few times but just give it a shake.

Or parking lot sweepers. My dad runs 2 sweeping companies and some of his places don’t offer the garage cans for the leaves the truck suck up so they make big piles and I go pick them up with my truck and trailer. I just use a big shovel and burlap’s. I’m considering a set up like this! Good stuff

Years ago I had a landscape company and my first leaf clean up job bit me in the ass.
1. The first problem was that I agreed to help out a friend that involved money and the time of my employees.
2. I way underestimated the time for what looked like a 4-hour job, it took 9. My partner looked at part of the site and I looked at the front and side yard. Never split an estimate like that again.
3. I failed to ask if the city did curbside vacuum or did they have to be bagged or did we have to remove. It was bagged!
Like I said I was young and this was my first big leaf cleanup, my quotes on all the landscape and maintenance had come out perfect up to now. I did learn and get much better at estimating leaf cleanups but you have to be cautious and never do a sight-unseen quote for anybody. One year a cleanup on a customer's house can be completely different than the next when it comes to leaves. I've seen the same site have triple the amount of leaves from one year to the next.

There are county dumps and bulk mulch/material yards for a fee.
does that vacuum pipe also mulch?
When the leaves go through the impeller that creates the suction like a fan, they get chopped up right before they get shot out into the trailer yes.
How do they handle rocky areas?
Do yourself a favor and get that new Echo blower, it's worth the $600 and it's a game changer!

Nice job. I may be wrong, but it looks like that vac doesn't chop up & reduce the leaves - imagine if you had a vac that did, that trailer would be only 20% filled.

Next time run the Stand up mower through the leaves and grind them up then vacuum them up. You can get 2 -3 time more leaves in the trailer. That's how we did it with my tow behind Gaint Vac. Also wear ear protection. Good Luck signed Retired Landscaper.
That's tough when solo to have a mower and a dump trailer. Most guys with a crew bring two trailers for that. And we were wearing noise cancelling earbuds.

@@LawnCareRookie Meno is correct as you expand and grow time is money. Mason dump with with an enclosed trailer for a stand on mower to mulch and a ride on with collection system. On the back of the truck weld a 2nd receiver tube 6" above the existing one. Install a swing away mount for the vac and you can still pull your trailer. I see two many guys running two trucks and two trailers during the short leaf season, brings the margins way down.
LCR's advice is important and overlooked. Get those leaves in the open and mulch them prior to loading them. You do that to reduce capacity ( that pile would be an 1/8 of its current size) and to break up the small sticks that slow plug/puncture vac hose. Your Vac time will also be half which your back will thank you for when your like me and have been doing it for too many years.
I used to run your set up 15 years ago, get rid of the heavy wood door on the back. Run a single mesh tarp all the way across the top and long enough to fold over the back and meet the bottom of the trailer where the gates are open. Close the gates to seal the tarp and add 2 bungie cords on each side and at some point along to top on both sides. Velocity of air flow in the box is almost nothing so that cuts the dust way down.
On the vac get rid of that silly extension, make an adaptor square to 8" round. Use a 24" long x 8" piece of Vac hose, cut a hole in the mesh and bed the flex tubing to a 90 and push it in. Secure hose with bungie so it doesnt pull back away from the mesh. Wet/icy leaves are not going thru that set up you have, well not easily anyway. Now everyone will say thats dumb the sticks will puncture the hose, no they wont if you mulch first. Even if you don't its still more profitable than all the down time un-plugging what you have. Plus we all know you have to store and set up all that crap, easier to handle a 24" inch pice of flex tubing and a mess tarp than everything you have currently.
Your off to a good start but most guys run stupid setups that are time consuming to set up (and disassemble) and plug often. The dry conditions in this video dont happen very often. Props to you though your a lot smarter than I was when I started 25 years ago. Leaf season is short if your a 4 season company you have to be able to switch over fast to maximize time.
Good luck dont be afraid to walk away from people who wont pay you an appropriate rate for that equipment. Seen hundreds of guys work cheap and go out of business and thru trial and error I have had the same customers for 25 years.
I live in an area where topsoil is a precious commodity. Our yard is basically 1/4 dirt and 3/4 sand. It barely supports a nice green yard. About 12 years ago I started to just mulch my leaves and let them rot. It took about 7 or 8 years but now I have about a good 8 inch layer of what looks like fine potting soil under my grass. My grass stays green almost all the way into August. Most of my neighbors yards go brown around the middle of July. My next door neighbor started following my lead about 4 years ago. He is starting to see a difference also. Not to mention he and I have started a compost pile in the back of our shared property line. It will take another 4 or 5 years but we are going to have excellent FREE topsoil to put on our gardens.
That's awesome! I totally agree. It's just unfortunate that we live in a "I want it now" society and patience rarely exists. They just want the leaves gone ASAP.
LCR I never could understand why people feel like they have to maintain a perfect green yard. All year around. If you want to rake your leaves that’s fine. Take them into a compost pile. Let them rot. If you just can’t wait. Get 2 or 3 big piles of leaves. Pour about 30 pounds of sugar over them and sprinkle 5 or 6 packages of bread yeast on them. Then stir up your pile. They will rot down to nothing in 2 years. If you get a good compost pile going you never have to ever buy potting soil again. My neighbor and I compost every thing from shredded paper to pizza crusts. We both have very small gardens. I only grow two tomato plants 2 bell pepper plants. And 2 pole bean sets. I plant pumpkins. I don’t plant them in the compost though. They will grow in sandy soil. Just don’t make the same mistake we made 2 years ago. After Halloween we went door to door picking up pumpkins. We chopped up about 60 pumpkins. It made great compost. It also provided us with s 20 year supply of pumpkins. I had about 75 pumpkins in my front yard with a help yourself sign on the table.

Pro tip of the day for you.. when you have that many leaves in a yard do the 2 step to speed up the process.. start in the middle of the yard and blow to the vac then move back then you are not pushing so much volume mid way.. if you have 2 guys like this vid start one in the middle one at the back! try it you will be faster I bet

Nice set up! You could do some major clean up with that set up. Do you know how much gross revenue he doing in leaf removal with the $83,000 set up? Just wondering what his return on the equipment is from an investment standpoint? $83,000 is a large chunk of change.
That's all retail pricing. He got everything used for a lot less, and not all at once...
Corey Sedrel I bought it all over a few years. The truck I paid about $29k for ($63 when it was new) trailer is $9k new paid $6k, vaccum is about $4600 I paid $2k, back packs were $550 each push blower was $3800

Honeslty easier to blow the leaves to the tube than to maneuver that tube around all day. First 3 seasons I did it that way and was kicked in the ass, the last 23 I blow the leaves to the tube and its just better

I normally will do that if they’re all in one area, it is easier but in this instance it was easier to do the way we did
Ill also rake them in, move the tube, lay it down and rake those in within a 5-10' area...
way faster and easier on your shoulders than using the tube all the time. Plus I find any hidden debris.

Mulching is the way to go. An exmark 60" X Series with mulch kit installed does just as well as sucking them up with the ultra vac begging system. Obviously some jobs are gonna need removal due to the total volume of leafs on lawn and in beds, then of course you have the picky customers who demand pickup and don't accept a free fert app of mulched leafs
I hear YA....on the mulching.....but you cant do it when you are dealing with PINE needles...they just need to be pushed out.
Little wonder is so much more easier and faster than any backpack blower.

I have over 130 trees on one acre. There's way too much sheer volume of leaves to get away with mulching.

Is there a machine that pulverise leaves in stead of just picking them up with the vacume ,pick them um with the vac then through a pulvasiser you know what I’m getting at ,you would be able to pick up much more you wouldn’t need much of a machine to pulverise leaves,old jimmy
Some guys mulch them up with the mower before the bag them or suck them up. But when you have this many, this is the most efficient. You just don't have time to spend all day on one property if you want to be profitable.
I would leave your vacuum tube running and just use the backpack blower to blow towards the tube. Is that possible?

It is possible. I use 2 pieces of 1/4 inch plywood as a backstop with a hole cut for the hose and a tarp with tent poles. Takes about 4 minutes to set up and works like a giant vacuum cleaner attachment. I literally NEVER touch a rake. I'm 56 so I have to learn to work smarter not harder...can't keep up with you young bucks but I also only do it part time

Too many leaves. It would smother the lawn. There's a point when it's not good to mulch and leave it on the grass.

In my area it’s better to estimate a flat rate, customers don’t know what speed I work. They are less likely to give me the job if I say $50 an hour+ dump fees. For me it’s better to rough guess time and dump fees and give a flat rate of say $300. Then the faster I work the more I make per hour.
