Love the fresh female perspective of your first guest host! Samantha really hits home on so many levels and her playful energy made this episode one of my favorites!!
yep! she is awesome!
Thank you for sharing your continued growth and need to do different things. So nice to know I'm not alone in that! I love to learn new ways to express my creativity.
pretty good episode. but really miss Lee's thoughtful and insightful comments.
The lack of money tips already set this one up to fail … I had no chance
I missed Lee on this one too. He's by far the best host! (thanks for the cash the other day, BTW)
Jake congratulations on your new book!
This was an excellent episode!
Thank you for this. I appreciate the different perspectives on these topics! I took a very different path, but am now getting into my first few paid children's books projects! We just wrapped on my first full-length book, and I have two more scheduled within the next 10-12 months through an agent. I went to a State college and studied Graphic Design. It took a lot longer, but my main source of income is now freelance Design, with Illustration a close second. I also fill in gaps during the Summer with interior painting and pressure washing just to get outdoors and stretch a bit. I'd love to talk more about this path as I was so discouraged growing up, but have now finally 'made it.'
First, Samantha you got my mum laughing as soon as you mentioned menopause so brownie points there lol. Second, awesome having the guest hosts!! Especially since both Anthony and Samantha have not only their own unique backgrounds as artists but in their life experiences as well and it's great to hear their takes on questions. I say that earns them another go at the hosting table 😜👍
I love learning new things from this podcast, and halfway through today's episode I learned that 4 hours of active productive work is normal. Here I thought I was being lazy or procrastinating if I wasn't spending 8-10 hours doing art which felt impossible. 😅 Crazy how I didn't know about how long the daily work hours were usually for you guys until now.
4 hours of solid hard work is my definition of a really productive day ! I honestly think I can work only one hour solid max without needing a quick break …unless I’m super obsessed with something (I’ve been known to sit editing a video for 8 hours straight without getting up …but that’s usually because I’m avoiding the drawing that I have to do 😂)
@@samanthacotterill2329 Same! Plus I have chores, grocery shopping, cooking and whatever else to make time for on days when I'm not working my part-time job
At one point in my decades of life, I was told that "a few is more than two", and it rhymes so it stuck. A "couple" is two. So essentially you are all right, 3 or 4 or 6 is a few. Everyone wins. Great episode! Congrats on the book Jake. And maybe time for more dogs to make appearances?
Hot take:
Couple: 2
Few, Handful, several: 3 or more (depending on context)
This is not a hot take, this is fact!!! For me a "few" caps out at 5.
4. But I’ve clearly lost . My better half feels vindicated
Kind of surprising to see Marc not sure about what next steps to make as an illustrator with that level of inherit ability and talent. Just goes to show how hard the illustration industry is and how an agent doesn't necessarily equate to getting lots of work. Further to Jake's comment on being an illustrator for a game developer, if Marc could team up with an indie developer he could maybe delve into game design? His art is really suited to it (Monster Boy Cursed Kingdom comes to mind). Perhaps participating in a game jam to start? Could be another avenue to explore if the publishing industry doesn't work out.
Regarding the comment that the industry is shrinking, I watched a recent SCBWI presentation on the state of the industry and the stats for published picture books are that they're still going strong, it's only middle grade that's in decline. Graphic novels are picking up too. So I wouldn't give up on the publishing route just yet if that's where the passion lies.
Hey I think I am missing the link in the show notes for Jake's comic or graphic novel workshop. I checked his website and I didn't see anything mentioned there...can someone share the link or info for this workshop please? Thank you.
Thanks as always. Fresh perspectives (on similar questions that often pop up) from people in different stages in their career and from different backgrounds is helpful in broadening the listeners' capacity to learn, but of course the original three are also always fab. Whatever works :)
Also Few = 3-4
I think a few = 3. Congratulations on your book Jake. Interesting perspectives Anthony and Samantha. Love your t-shirt and bull doggie Samantha
There’s also the inner mountain west vernacular “couple few” lol.
Hey there, love the episode. Quick question, what software did you use for this with all 3 of you on screen real-time? Ive been wanting to do this with a couple artists friends with all 3 of us on screen together.
We use riverside.fm and then edit it in premiere!
@@SVSLearn Awesome thank you!
Always enjoy the podcast, but feel like there's a lot of the same questions are being answered. Like shall I go Pro, shall I go to art school, should I be independant or work with companies. Perhaps these questions could be referred back to recent answers.
Guests were cool, but I would miss the way Jake, Will and Lee wind eachother up.
I would argue that even if the questions are sometimes somewhat repetitive, the answers are usually different, more specific each time.
@@artloveranimation Maybe, but they are bound to appear to be specific if each scenerio is a bit different. Most who ask the similar questions often would need to go through a whole list of what their circumstances are for it to be relevant. Ultimitely, advice is great here, but no one can tell you how to live your life. Like a Surfer, you have to take the good waves with the crashes, but it's all learning either way.
I learn better with repetition. And these were two new perspectives so I'm all for it.
Couple is always 2, Few is 3-5, Several is 5+ (probably caps out at 8-10)
When talking specifically about hours I think the word few makes most sense at 3!!!
Funny enough my spouse believed a couple is any even number and a few is any odd number 😂
Where's the link to the comic workshop?
On the podcast notes, or the website
couple is 2, so a few is 3. What else would you call 3?
I've lost this argument big time
@@samanthacotterill2329 🤣
I like the 3 originals
same!!!
Who let Wheeler on here?
i dunno. he just showed up and we let him in. sort of like a stray dog!
Couple = 2 and only 2
Some of = 2-♾️
Few/several = 3-6
Bunch = 5-7
A lot = 10-♾️
Few is definitely 4 unless it's 3 or 5.
I think a few, several, and a handful all mean more than two and less than a sh*t ton lol. They are the vague options and are associated with a certain level of randomness. If you want specifics use the number. It’s what it’s for. 😂
I was taught 'few' was 3.
Will weston should be the standard quality of taking a course. Not these subscription buffet one size fits all courses.
Bring back Will and Lee!
3
I count 3 as few. Sorry sam 😂
I have a feeling I'm going to lose this argument big time.
Yes!
1
2 a couple
3-5 a few
6-7 Several
8+ A lot
Context matters, but image you are asking for candy (Skittles or M&Ms) or saying how many hours something took you. lol 😂
I think going to college is absolutely unnecessary and in many cases counterproductive. What is needed is targeted structure where the inputs directly line up with your desired outputs. Whether you choose a college or another course of learning you have to carefully vet the process will give you what Jake lists as essentials. That is rare in today’s college art programs. You shouldn’t pay for something out of cultural pressure that leads nowhere. You can always go to college later if things change. It’s mostly to soothe parents minds.
