I bet I have listened to that 500 times over the past 20 years. It always amazes. As goofy as Tony is, he certainly is one of the best baritones of all time.
oh my gosh, I was a brand new barbershopper when they won. my fragile little brain couldn't comprehend how singing like this was possible. still one of my all time favorite quartets!
I was 17 when I saw Platinum in 1999 (before their 2nd place run). They were workshopping in Orlando at UCF and I got to see firsthand how intentional and delicate a song like this is. I am selfishly glad they didn't win that first year so we got to see the next level. This song gives me chills every time.
One of the most mind blowing barbershop performances I’ve ever heard. This recording is what got me in to barbershop. They are all legends at their parts and man this song is fragile but emotional and they all line up together so well.. their vibratos are matched, their micro tuning is matched, the expression and energy is the same. The best that could only happen once. Thanks Platinum
Even more so that they had the good sense not to stop the sound after the chord rang out and kept the energy going. I've seen too many quartets try to be "artistic" by giving 4-5 seconds of silence after this chord. Or after "alone".
Damn, it blows my mind. For some reason, it is the first time i hear Platinum (only heard of em in jokes). All of them have some unique caracteristic voice; it was amazing.
i know what you mean, i was thinking, who really is the best. common, suntones, buffalo bills, even crossroad, VS and ringmasters pop up and then i go back to the plat vids and i cant really say it isnt these guys. just unbelievably good
Cody Byrd - true, but I think that what made Platinum so special was the interplay between De Rosa’s and Connelly’s voice. They brought that over from Keepsake and added a smoother bass and sharper tenor. It’s at it’s most perfect balance in the third to last chord.
Fun Fact: To this day this quartet holds 12 gold medals between all of them, which is absolutely insane
Especially when one only has one. And Gary has 3 singing three different parts! Arguably the GOAT for groups
They're all olympians?
@@ericmacho7452 in the most barbershop style YES haha
13 now with Tony winning another one in 2024

100 percent
Absolutely!
Platinum (in my opinion) is the best barbershop quartet ever created
no doubt about it

1:42 gets me EVERY time!

This is exceptionally good, it just draws you in with each phrase

In my humble view, this is the best barbershop quartet ever formed--even more talented than Boston Common or the Suntones.

Yes!
Phil Alden Lemon Squeezy and After Hours are some really good quartets though.
I've always been partial to Acoustix and Michigan Jake, but yes - for straight ensemble musicianship, Platinum can't be beat.
Wow wow wow that was gorgeous!
Get'em teach!
Which one was your teacher
Conner Rock probably Gary Lewis
Is that Gary on the post? The voicing at the end there is pretty unique... MAN, they sound amazing.
That's just the classic bari-over-lead-over-tenor voicing that pops up all the time ;)

Would love to meet Joe defo my barbershop idol
Fred had to beat them in 1999 just to give us this performance
