In my limited experience with watercolor in college, I learned to soak the paper prior to painting on it and to mount the wet paper to a smooth hard surface with the kind of brown tape backed with glue that is activated by water. The soaking expands the paper evenly and when it is taped down it dries in its expanded size. You could mount it to your hard plastic piece or varnished particle board, allow it to dry and paint on the stretched taped paper.

Pam, I use “Spectrafix” to lock in my mark making, it’s a non toxic fixative that was designed to be used with soft pastels, I like it a lot- has no odor either…another option for some artists👍

I went to panels as I could not get the paper to lay flat for adhering to a panel. Finally I have some knowledge of how to do this! I want to check to see if you have a video on the adhering process.
Just a thought, but have you ever used green board? It is a drywall board that is used to back tiling in areas prone to dampness like behind tile in a shower surround construction and is specially designed to resist water it comes in 4` by 8` sheets like particle board and might give you less trouble than particle board. Great tutorial, thank you very much for sharing.

When I did my school, many years ago, we dit first on the paper a layer of Caparol and I saw, when I did also a layer on the top, the paper became flat. But with only acrylic paint. Another great informative video, Pam. I've been working on panels up to this point, but the larger panels weigh too much. And have wanted to work on paper. So this is a great option for me. I am going to watch episode 46 for the mounting.

I was using the exact same microphone I use when doing the UA-cam Live videos but there is a breakdown in quality due to UA-cam; they compress everything to make it accessible to everyone which causes the quality to go down. I'm most likely not going to do another LIVE while painting; however, I could do a Q&A session as the sound would still be good (I think!) ;)

Hi Pamela! Thanks for this video. I am curious what your process was when you originally created your painting? Did you mount it to avoid wrinkles, did you tape it to plywood? I work with acrylic ink on paper and I like to mount them once I am done. I want to do some works that are 48 x 60 inches and I am curious what the best process would be to paint it to avoid a lot of warping. Thanks!
Katie - I tacked Strathmore mixed media paper to a plywood wall - I used big thumbtacks to hold the paper! It warped a bit, but that's why I had to flatten it out in this video :) Good luck!!

Hmm-it is probably okay that you gessoed both sides -I have not tried this process on a gessoed surface-perhaps it will take a little longer to dry but I think it should work! Good luck 🌻

I’ve recently started exploring my painting side after spending the past 15 years as a graphic designer and recently colouring book author. I’m really loving it and I to also love paper and cradled wood panels (I’ve even been making my own and I’m enjoying the process too). My question is that in this video you mentioned that large paper works are easier to store - how do you store them? My studio is my dining room, I’m hoping to take over the garage soon however I’m worried about dust and would love to see how you store your paper works - another video idea perhaps? Hi Angel - you are very welcome! I love to share :) For acrylic/mixed media, the great thing is the paper can be rolled up. If a painting is 7ft x 3.5ft, that's a 3.5ft roll to store! However, if cwm/oil, these cannot be rolled, so they need to be stored flat. I have a pretty oversized styrofoam portfolio; simply two large sheets of 1 in sytrofoam and I store these works flat inside; I use a velcro closure to keep the portfolio together. Hi Debby - Usually, smaller paper, if mounted on panel or behind a mat and glass, does not benefit too much from this process - it is only when work is noticeably warped and wrinkled that it may cause some visual and practical problems when mounting - so I'd say it is a case by case situation! I have also taken smaller works to a local framer and had them put it in their dry mount press (heat and pressure) - this also works great for smaller works as the works come out completely flat - but I only did this with watercolor - I never did this with an acrylic painting! :)
Thanks so much Pam, you’re a great teacher. I’ve heard you mention that if you end up with bubbles it can be fixed. I mounted an acrylic painting done on 22x30” 300 lb water color paper, to a cradled panel. When dry, it ended up with bubbles where the glue did not adhere. I think I know now what I did wrong - but is there a way to flatten it once it’s been (partially) adhered? I had first coated the panel with GAC100 to avoid SID, and then used the glue you recommend - but perhaps those 2 are not compatible. I also did not weight it properly, and have learned from that too. Thanks again...
Hi Margie! Oh dear! I’m so sorry this happened. In order to remove air bubbles, it becomes a bit surgical. When I had a few bubbles due to lack of adhesion, I had to slice through the painting with a sharp blade and apply glue into the air locket-then Smith it out and weigh it down, then disguise the cuts if necessary with more oil paint.. With 300lb watercolor paper, which is much harder to disguise such a cut, it would depend on your painting and how easily you can disguise any cutting? It may be an important lesson learned - hope it works out!
just a suggestion....extend the pole on your roller. that way you wont need to hunch over. for me that posture is a back killer. if your pole doesnt extend you can find one at any hardware store. let your tools do the work! :) hope that helps......a year and a half later.....
questions: why don't you cover the particle board with a layer of heavy plastic to make sure it doesn't get wet? and also, can the wetting part of the process be done outside with a spray hose, roll up your work and bring it inside to finish on dry blotting paper? have you found that the art paper rips easily when wet? wondering if the artwork can be glued onto the cradled panel after wetting it while it is still wet? thank you so so much for this one. very practical info. love it! - karen
Hi Karen - I may have heard about this process decades ago but somehow I remember particle board is an inexpensive way to go. The idea is to let a minimal amount of moisture to be slowly absorbed into the particle board (NOT a flood!) - and if you put a plastic barrier on top of the particle board, the moisture would take much, much, much longer to evaporate. Since this is a flattening "sandwich", and because I put plastic on the surface of the painting, the water needs a place to go (in addition to evaporation) and the particle board is able to take in this moisture as it is pretty minimal - but pretty vital to the process as well! GREAT question :)! Thank you! :)
Hi Pamela, That is a lot of work and it takes up a lot of floor space. Most people will not have the space to do this, especially if it has to sit for at least an entire week. I was going to suggest that you paint the particle board (MDF) with polyurethane to help prevent it from soaking up the moisture, but in the comments I read that you want the MDF to soak up some of the moisture. MDF and moisture do not work well together. Working on the floor is another problem. Saw horses can help you with that and if you put a second MDF panel on top of the high density plastic panel it will help spread the pressure of any weights you add - you don't have to use tables, and having your work at waist height will save your back. But here is another idea - invest in a vacuum bag system like woodworkers use for veneering tabletops and other large pieces and suck your paper right onto the panel you intend to attach it to. You can use acrylic medium for the glue and it won't take a week for the paper to flatten. I'll bet your cabinet maker who fabricates your panels can tell you all about vacuum systems and veneering. Good video! Several questions. Why did you use freezer paper between your painting and the plastic? Since you did not fix your marks, I assume that you have not varnished your painting yet. Correct?
Hi Lynne - great questions. The freezer paper simply separates the acrylic, plastic paint from a plastic surface, though I do have the "plastic side" of the freezer against the painting. To be honest, it could most likely be skipped but I tend to go overboard when it comes to "protection" - warranted or not!! ;)
Hey Pamela, I am really Desperate... hope you can help me. I do paint on huge thick handmade watercolor paper (cotton). At the latest when I put my magnetic frame (attached to the top and bottom of the sheet), the sheet curls and it lifts away from the wall. Do you think your technique will help? Or do you have a special tip for large hand-made paper? Best regars
Thank you for sharing this technique . I'm working on a cotton canvas 48 x 48 that will have to be taken to Europe rolled up in a tube. There are some lines in the canvas where the canvas had to be draped over a table while working as the table top was smaller than teh canvas . Does this technique for paper apply to canvas ? And do you have any advise for rolling in a tube ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated . Many Thanks
Have you worked on 300 lb. watercolor paper or print making paper. Both being heavier than the 140 lb and not rippling? Or acrylic paper? Thank you for the video and all your hard work?
Yes, I have worked on 300 lb paper but given the much higher cost, I actually prefer 140 lb! Also, I can tape it to my wall; much harder with the 300lb paper! :)
For acrylic and mixed media paintings, I use 300lb paper with the back gessoed before starting. It keeps the paper from wrinkling. Would that work on 7-8 foot pieces? Would the 140 lb paper still wrinkle?
Hi Jeanne - I have used 300 lb paper - it "feels" different - ie, the cold press 300 lb feels different from the 140 lb cold press but nonetheless, I found I never had any buckling with this heavier, much more pricey paper! The paper I use in this video is 140 lb and yes, it usually does need some flattening! ;)

I'm just wondering if it would be easier to stretch the paper first and paint it while still attached to the stretching board. I realise that you would lose a small amount in size when the holding tape was cut off, but that could be allowed for. Just wondering?
Do you order the freezer paper from Amazon or get it at a local store? I cannot found freezer paper any more at the grocery store. I thought they quit making it?
Once flat there is that scary part to mount the work on a panel. Do you have any secrets on how to do that without getting any bubbles. I'm ok with smaller works but ones the panel is 36x36 or more, I seem to get a bubble or two. AND when you do a triptych do you mount it on a board with a tiny bit to trim off or do you match the edges?

I use large sheets of paper for practice. No more glueing them down to panels. They always bubble and warp. I'm done with that idea. I've tried and tried. It's canvas for me.
Yes - I considered doing this on a table but using the paint roller handle made getting the surface wet much easier! And, I didn't have to lift the tables (which I used to weigh the piece down) to table height!!! ;)

Hi Deb, this is a great question and I did reach out to Dave Bernard at Gamblin. He thought IF the cwm/oil painting were completely dry and if you put a small amount of water on the back (unlike what I did) it should be fine! Let me know if this works for you!

For very large work I roll it loosely and store upright or I store it flat between styrofoam sheets! 😊

Hi Debby - Usually, smaller paper, if mounted on panel or behind a mat and glass, does not benefit too much from this process - it is only when work is noticeably warped and wrinkled that it may cause some visual and practical problems when mounting - so I'd say it is a case by case situation! I have also taken smaller works to a local framer and had them put it in their dry mount press (heat and pressure) - this also works great for smaller works as the works come out completely flat - but I only did this with watercolor - I never did this with an acrylic painting! :)

Thanks so much Pam, you’re a great teacher. I’ve heard you mention that if you end up with bubbles it can be fixed. I mounted an acrylic painting done on 22x30” 300 lb water color paper, to a cradled panel. When dry, it ended up with bubbles where the glue did not adhere. I think I know now what I did wrong - but is there a way to flatten it once it’s been (partially) adhered? I had first coated the panel with GAC100 to avoid SID, and then used the glue you recommend - but perhaps those 2 are not compatible. I also did not weight it properly, and have learned from that too. Thanks again...
Hi Margie! Oh dear! I’m so sorry this happened. In order to remove air bubbles, it becomes a bit surgical. When I had a few bubbles due to lack of adhesion, I had to slice through the painting with a sharp blade and apply glue into the air locket-then Smith it out and weigh it down, then disguise the cuts if necessary with more oil paint.. With 300lb watercolor paper, which is much harder to disguise such a cut, it would depend on your painting and how easily you can disguise any cutting? It may be an important lesson learned - hope it works out!
just a suggestion....extend the pole on your roller. that way you wont need to hunch over. for me that posture is a back killer. if your pole doesnt extend you can find one at any hardware store. let your tools do the work! :) hope that helps......a year and a half later.....

questions: why don't you cover the particle board with a layer of heavy plastic to make sure it doesn't get wet? and also, can the wetting part of the process be done outside with a spray hose, roll up your work and bring it inside to finish on dry blotting paper? have you found that the art paper rips easily when wet? wondering if the artwork can be glued onto the cradled panel after wetting it while it is still wet? thank you so so much for this one. very practical info. love it! - karen
Hi Karen - I may have heard about this process decades ago but somehow I remember particle board is an inexpensive way to go. The idea is to let a minimal amount of moisture to be slowly absorbed into the particle board (NOT a flood!) - and if you put a plastic barrier on top of the particle board, the moisture would take much, much, much longer to evaporate. Since this is a flattening "sandwich", and because I put plastic on the surface of the painting, the water needs a place to go (in addition to evaporation) and the particle board is able to take in this moisture as it is pretty minimal - but pretty vital to the process as well! Hi Pamela, That is a lot of work and it takes up a lot of floor space. Most people will not have the space to do this, especially if it has to sit for at least an entire week. I was going to suggest that you paint the particle board (MDF) with polyurethane to help prevent it from soaking up the moisture, but in the comments I read that you want the MDF to soak up some of the moisture. MDF and moisture do not work well together. Working on the floor is another problem. Saw horses can help you with that and if you put a second MDF panel on top of the high density plastic panel it will help spread the pressure of any weights you add - you don't have to use tables, and having your work at waist height will save your back.
But here is another idea - invest in a vacuum bag system like woodworkers use for veneering tabletops and other large pieces and suck your paper right onto the panel you intend to attach it to. You can use acrylic medium for the glue and it won't take a week for the paper to flatten. I'll bet your cabinet maker who fabricates your panels can tell you all about vacuum systems and veneering.

Good video! Several questions. Why did you use freezer paper between your painting and the plastic? Since you did not fix your marks, I assume that you have not varnished your painting yet. Correct?
Hi Lynne - great questions. The freezer paper simply separates the acrylic, plastic paint from a plastic surface, though I do have the "plastic side" of the freezer against the painting. To be honest, it could most likely be skipped but I tend to go overboard when it comes to "protection" - warranted or not!! ;)

Hey Pamela, I am really Desperate... hope you can help me. I do paint on huge thick handmade watercolor paper (cotton). At the latest when I put my magnetic frame (attached to the top and bottom of the sheet), the sheet curls and it lifts away from the wall. Do you think your technique will help? Or do you have a special tip for large hand-made paper?

Thank you for sharing this technique . I'm working on a cotton canvas 48 x 48 that will have to be taken to Europe rolled up in a tube. There are some lines in the canvas where the canvas had to be draped over a table while working as the table top was smaller than teh canvas . Does this technique for paper apply to canvas ? And do you have any advise for rolling in a tube ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated . Many Thanks

Have you worked on 300 lb. watercolor paper or print making paper. Both being heavier than the 140 lb and not rippling? Or acrylic paper? Thank you for the video and all your hard work?
Yes, I have worked on 300 lb paper but given the much higher cost, I actually prefer 140 lb! Also, I can tape it to my wall; much harder with the 300lb paper! :)

For acrylic and mixed media paintings, I use 300lb paper with the back gessoed before starting. It keeps the paper from wrinkling. Would that work on 7-8 foot pieces? Would the 140 lb paper still wrinkle?
Hi Jeanne - I have used 300 lb paper - it "feels" different - ie, the cold press 300 lb feels different from the 140 lb cold press but nonetheless, I found I never had any buckling with this heavier, much more pricey paper! The paper I use in this video is 140 lb and yes, it usually does need some flattening! ;)

I'm just wondering if it would be easier to stretch the paper first and paint it while still attached to the stretching board. I realise that you would lose a small amount in size when the holding tape was cut off, but that could be allowed for. Just wondering?
To save marks is it necessary to use a gloss as opposed to matte medium?

Once flat there is that scary part to mount the work on a panel. Do you have any secrets on how to do that without getting any bubbles. I'm ok with smaller works but ones the panel is 36x36 or more, I seem to get a bubble or two. AND when you do a triptych do you mount it on a board with a tiny bit to trim off or do you match the edges?

I use large sheets of paper for practice. No more glueing them down to panels. They always bubble and warp. I'm done with that idea. I've tried and tried. It's canvas for me.
Pamela' would be nice to have a coffee table hight work table to do this. I have not yet worked on such a large piece.

Yes - I considered doing this on a table but using the paint roller handle made getting the surface wet much easier! And, I didn't have to lift the tables (which I used to weigh the piece down) to table height!!! ;)

Aerosols aren't great, I know, but hairspray is much quicker and easier to use for fixing marks and takes just a tiny squirt.

Hi Deb, this is a great question and I did reach out to Dave Bernard at Gamblin. He thought IF the cwm/oil painting were completely dry and if you put a small amount of water on the back (unlike what I did) it should be fine! Let me know if this works for you!
